I've been checking out Ebay a while now and it seems like a lot of Beastie Boys merchandise is coming down in price...or just not selling. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Not that BBoys stuff is worth a lot anyway, but I have a pretty good collection of stuff that I'm thinking of selling. Compared to what I bought alot of the stuff for, I would be selling it for a lot less but I have an idea of what I want. Are there not as many collectors out there? In the last 7-8 years or so the market has really changed, at least it looks that way to me. I wasn't really looking for an investment by any means, just liked collecting the stuff. I don't have time for it anymore so if others can enjoy what I did, more power to them ;)

I think there are extremes on the cheap and expensive side. There are tons of posters, bootlegs, and tshirts that can be found dirt cheap.
But some of the more rare stuff still commands a nice couple of bucks. It just all depends.

Somethings aren't as rare as they used to be. People can just download a single, remix, or e.p., they don't need the original copy anymore. Before you had to have the 12" to hear the remix. Same with video. I'm all for downloading. As for the other items, they probably drop too, when there's less collectors now.

Ebay and the internet has changed the game.
Before eBay and internet discographies, shit like the Rock Hard EP and the Polywog Stew 7" and a lot of the 12" and CD singles were known by fans but very hard to find. You had to scour record stores to find a Hey Ladies single or if you were super lucky you'd find Rock Hard or Shadrach or something (usually at a pretty decent price actually.) There was no central internet marketplace like eBay, just weird message boards and places like record finder. So when eBay first hit, that semi-rare stuff became expensive because eBay was not huge yet and the collectors who knew about it, who had been looking in record stores for years, would see stuff and bid like crazy. I used to sell sealed copies of MCA & Burzootie I bought at the record store for $25-30 on eBay for $60-$100 a pop. But then eBay got super huge, more copies showed up, and the prices went down considerably.
On the super-rare stuff, on the other hand, you can have inflation because people now have access to the information to find out what's rare. The County Mike LP has gone up. The Young and the Useless 7" is typically more expensive now. I think I bought a mint copy of the Young and Useless 7" off eBay for $30 or something back in the late 90s. Your average Beastie fan didn't even know about it back then so it was less competition. Now everybody knows its out there because of Beastiemania and whatnot and there aren't many surfaced copies (compared to something like the Rock Hard EP) so the price goes up.

hey, this is my first post so don't give me hard time. Don't know about things decreasing in price - I know of a set of the beastie boys figures (the ones in the tin can) for sale at $1500! I've been collecting beasties stuff for ages but not all the releases from every country. Decided to start collecting properly and just got a copy of Pollywog Stew (7" vinyl) for £6.50, I think it was a bit of a bargain?

Prices also tend to cycle down after an album's run it's course. If you're really looking to sell things, and don't need the cash right now, I'd wait until the next album (hopefully) comes around - that would probably be the peak point of prices.
I remember in 1995 (either pre-Ebay or pre-before-I-knew-about-Ebay), I found the glorious www.eil.com. For about six months, I pretty much bought everything from them. After that, I pretty much focused on Ebay I think. Back then, Eil was still expensive, but not near as bad as it is today. I think the most I ever spent on single items in those days was $45 on Hip Hop Sampler and $60 on Pollywog Stew. Those had to be pre-Ebay, because I could never find those anywhere back then (Texas area). I think I got those both at a record convention in Austin.
