that horses actually like to run.
Pam Anderson criticizes Kentucky Derby (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060214/ap_en_ce/pamela_vs_the_colonel;_ylt=AiZAcUwR2L33A43ZVzXvfaq s0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3YXYwNDRrBHNlYwM3NjI-)
basically she thinks we shouldn't force horses to race for our amusement. *rolls eyes* Would someone please tell this woman that horses actually enjoy running and that these particular horses were bred for it. Race horses are worth thousands and in some cases millions of dollars and are far from mistreated. It's kinda like saying we shouldn't force herding dogs to heard sheep or cows. yo dude, we bred them to like herding and those types of dogs are extremely unhappy when they don't have a job to do. that's why many of them excel at obedience trials. but we probably shouldn't have obedience trials either, cause they exploit the dogs. puke.
I support animal rights, I really do, but some times they take too far.
don't they get killed with a shotgun when they get hurt, or is that just in cartoons?

Um...now a days if they can't fix the horse's injury and it's in too much pain they humanely euthanize with a shot.(not a shotgun)
back in the old days they did shoot them. but vet medicine also wasn't as advanced back then so treating a compound fracture or other injuries was very difficult if not impossible. So they put the horse down.
shot, shotgun, i was close

Do you really know that they like running?
I mean, have you ever asked one?
cookiepuss
02-14-2006, 06:04 PM
well I've owned them and they sure do like to run in the feilds all day long. and race horses were bred to have genes that make them predispositioned to run.
I really don't think having them run on a track is all that detrimental to thier mental/physical health.

Maybe they just pretend and at night they sit around in the stables thinking up elaborate plans to kill you.

maybe that's why it rubs me the wrong way. for a person whose so against exploiting animals she sure doesn't have a problem being an exploited woman.

I'm not gay, i just have taste.
Original Pam was hot. She's had so many boob jobs and now they are just wrecked and way to big. Sick as in horrible. I don't want to squeeze a girl and suddenly think about the goldfish you win in a bag from the carnival.

bad apples in every bunch. I know alot of great horse owners too. I just think she's wandering into a grey area with the racing thing and it's kinda unessary and publicity oriented.
however, I have no problem with her complaints about KFC.

Yeah, I think its because of the things they do to them to get them to be faster.
I saw a racehorse once and I thought it was the most beautiful horse I'd ever seen.

good point, I wasn't considering possibility of steriod use in the animals in terms of her argument, but that probably is happening on some level, unfortunately. I beleive that the use of such props is not condoned and there are penalties if it's discovered, just like in human sports.
at any rate she doesn't address that, but simply says we shouldn't make them do it for our amusement.

We should breed horses to suck dick - that would be ethical and erotic
or not
do animals enjoy anything? Or do they just follw a course of action most likley to achieve preprogrammed goals - food/reproduction etc.
I suspect this is beyond Pam, let alone anyone here....
but Pam is hot so I will side with her

the fact is that alot of these Jockeys develop strong love for their Animals and vice versa...the good one we always hear bout winning have been trained by these Jockeys since infancy, the Horses look up to them or else we hear alot more bout people being knocked off their horses. She doesn't address the whole spectrum. If her argument is all bout how we promote races for our amusement then what bout Boxing? I always find it funny when you see humans putting more time on issues that don't exist really bad in the animal world. Unless the Horses are being mistreated on a whole, not just a minority, then I don't want to hear it. She ain't good for nothing either, can't beleive anybody takes her seriously.

Im not convinced animals experance love - I think they are utimately reproduction machines for selfish genes as in Dawkins.
I would imagine a horse learns to run because it is taught to do so in order to recieve rewards instead of punishments. but then I freely admit I dont know anything about the horse training process.
Also Boxing is optional - if the potential payoff exceed the costs then people will do it and I dont think that is unethical - it doesnt seem like a similar argument to me at all.
Not that I care about horses, I ate one once, but still just being devils advocate

Why isn't it detrimental? Because it's for our amusement?
The point is that we've 'Created' race horses. And they're next to useless after their careers are done. If a horse is injured and killed, it's because it couldn't be rehabilitated into racing condition. Too bad if it could live a quiet life anyway, right?

what suck with horses races is that the horses is push to the extreme of is capacity. It go,go,go,go!So usually after 2-3 years they are screw.BUt,a lot of them are being well treated after. But still,i do prefer watching a horse running free in the field then watching him race for money! in a another state of seing this, if i knew the race/horses and the ones that bring bacon,i would maybe bet on it! :D

I don't know why Barb Wire gets so much flack. I think it's passionate and literate, detailed and expansive... it was conceived with a risk-taking flair for old-fashioned movie magic. And it's driven by characters so believable you almost forget it's just a film.

The same could be said about people really. You obviously don't watch those pet rescuing people things on PBS.
I think people, while being subject to the same basic primal instincts, have the ability to reason and act to achieve goals other than the basic eat and pass on genetic code ones. At least I hope so.
I think humans are capable of forming bonds with others that are not nessecarily sefish in their nature, I dont think thats true of animals - but then Im no biology expert so someone may correct me on this

Oh please. I watch Animal cops on Animal planet religiously and they aren't EVER rescuing $800,000.00 race horses. The caliber of animals that get to race in the Kentucky Derby is far diferent from what maybe happening to horses at a local fairgrounds race track. Horses that compete in the kentucky derby and then retire get put out to pasture and to stud. it's a tough life of frolicking and fucking. Some race horses are living better than you or I.
I'm sure some races horses are being mistreated and that should be addressed and punished as each individual case is revealed, instead of attacking the racing community as a whole.

they get sold to glue factories in real life too... well dog food factories to be exact.
"Ferdinand earned a then-record of $609,500 in winnings, but the colt wasn't through. After finishing second in the Preakness and third in the Belmont Stakes in 1986, the thoroughbred found his winning stride again the following season and won Horse of the Year honors by nosing out 1987 Kentucky Derby winner Alysheba in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Two years later, however, Ferdinand was retired to stud, a job at which he proved to be a dud. Five years after that, in 1994, he was shipped to Japan for a second try at standing stud. Again, he couldn't rise to the occasion. Earlier this summer, reports came out of Japan that Ferdinand was dead, apparently shipped to a Japanese slaughterhouse where he likely became pet food.
It was an ordinary end—thousands of lesser-known horses, after all, meet the same fate annually—for one extraordinary animal."

"Ferdinand is not the only top thoroughbred to die in an overseas slaughterhouse. In 1997, reports surfaced that 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Exceller, who beat two Triple Crown winners in the race, was slaughtered in Sweden. Many other famous horses—including Kentucky Derby winners Alysheba (1987), Strike the Gold (1991), Sea Hero (1993) and War Emblem (2002), are standing stud in foreign countries, which has the more sensitive among racing enthusiasts worried that the animals will ultimately meet the same fate as Ferdinand."

Yes, although its potential for camp homage to Humphrey Bogart is belied by the emphasis on a stylized cyberpunk atmosphere, there is still a Russ Meyer-esque delight in the delivery of the film.

It never feels heavy or pretentious -- only more and more engrossing with each viewing. I think the it presents a daring dystopian view of the future.
