warning: just me ranting and this probably will bore the snot out of you.

this blows. okay, so this morning about 15 minutes into my shift i start feeling really weird. stomach cramps, nauseous, headache, barfy, etc. i've been training a new cashier all week and this is my last day training her, so i figure she's got the hang of it. i wait until 8:30 when relief comes in - in the form of cashier/stockroom person, and tell her that i'm not feeling well and i think i'm going to go home. she says fine, she doesn't think i'm really needed today anyway, and though i feel sorta guilty, i figure the new girl is going to work out okay and they've gotten by on far less people before. besides, i'm about to puke up my smoothie.

so i get to the parking lot and i think to myself, i'd better call my manager just to give him a heads-up. which i don't even have to do, considering i'd already told the people there at the moment to tell him when he comes in. so i call him and he's got this "why are you ditching us" attitude. i let him know that i think the new girl will be fine cashiering on her own, and that i really AM NOT FEELING WELL and that i'm sorry but i need to go home. and he once again goes "well...okay..." and i ask again if he'll be okay without me. "yeah, i...guess."

CHRIST. i hate calling in sick, and i always feel really guilty about it. that's why i very, very rarely do it. it pisses me off, though, that these people make me feel so shitty about it. when they hired the last cashier, they told me they were switching schedules around because they needed someone they could "really count on being there, dependable, rock-solid every night." and that i'd been fine in that aspect, except for my vacation (which i told them about months earlier, when i was HIRED), when i was sick (i had the flu and was out for a few days. EVERYONE HAD IT at one point or another and had to miss some work), and when i hurt my back (i had a pulled muscle in my back when i woke up and called in very early that morning even though i didn't work until late in the evening to give them advance notice and when i found out they didn't have anyone else to cover i went in ANYWAY even though i couldn't move my head to my right side).

and then the new chick quit a week later and they called me every day to work in the restaurant and as cashier. and i came in. just like i always do when they call me in. i'm the first person they call when someone else calls in sick.

but i'm not dependable.

yeah, it's a bitch when tuff like that happens. i wouldn't worry too much about it, though, cause obviously it is a business, and they don't seem to care too much about their employees.

our neighbors were doing it for a good solid hour this morning (first in the shower, then the bedroom. 3 times, i counted) and that might have been what made me queasy.

i worked at one place as a cashier for 6 months, and i know thats not really long, but i only ever called in sick once, and it was 2 hours of overtime i was calling sick from. they rang me back like 4 times saying that there were other jobs i could do if i had a cold, and i had to keep saying no.

they just kept hastling me and trying to guilt-trip me. i kinda know how you fell...it's a pain...

how much training really goes into being a cashier?

i can't imagine it takes more than a few minutes to teach someone how to use the machine, and i would guess it just takes time to get to know prices and such

oh yeah, and on that dependability thing: i just read a thing my boss gave me about something like that. and they kept saying that you have to earn "chits" to get the respect of your boss and be able to take off on any days that you need. it made sense in a general way, but the use of the chit term was just retarded

cosmo105
02-17-2006, 11:29 AM
chits?

yeah, it doesn't take long to actually learn the machine but there were quite a few procedures she needed to learn. closing, counting out the money the right way, other duties, return policies, etc. and she had them all pretty much down.

i guarantee they'll call me later on today asking me to come in.

I was yelled at for 30 minutes yesterday by my boss and one of his complaints in his rant was "if I can't learn to anticipate what he needs before he needs before he needs it I'm not going to to make it in this position." Is it just me or did he basically tell me that if I can't learn to read his mind I'm out of a job? I bust my ass for this guy, catch his fucking mistakes, kiss his clients asses and he appriciates non of it. I wish he'd just fire me already.

Anyway Cosmo, I know what it's like to be under valued at work. it sucks.

chits?

the example they used was a woman who moved cities a number of times before ended up in her original spot over a number of years. then when they wanted her to move again later on, she said no because her kid had a couple years left of school and didnt want to make her change again. and the company said ok and still let her stick out that current job because she had loads of chits from all the previous moves.

basically it said that if you want to have any pull in keeping your job the way you want it, you have to be good and do what the company wants for a while first.

this isn't my CAREER though. this is a part-time job and my full-time job is a student, and i've told them that so many times. i cut back on hours because starting next week i'm going to school a lot more, and my schedule makes it such that it wouldn't make sense for them to have me come in for a few hours at a time. so i'm taking a big cut in pay even though i really don't want to...but i'm taking more units and arrggahh cosmo smash.

we're really thinking about taping a note to their door. we're really glad you have such a healthy sex life and all but could you keep the exorcisms down a little. at least it's entertaining.

"chit" sounds like a really ethnic way of saying shit.

i just told you, asshole. you figure it out. maybe your work environment isnt healthy, and therefor not condusive to you earning any chits

and cosmo: yeah, i'll be done with this job im at in the end of april anyway so its not really a current concern to me. i guess i can't say it was a bad thing for me to read that thing, but it definetly seemed a bit strange for my situation

being underappreciated is a big part of the reason i left my last job. in all honesty, i did a LOT there, and there were a few times when some notoriously asshole customers made complaints about me and they didn't listen to my side of the story. i bend over backwards to make the customer happy and would never, ever lose my temper or be intentionally rude. and yet they gave me stern talkings-to both times. the second time i was so angry i cried and almost walked out that day. i figured at this place i'd be more appreciated and valued but i guess since they've been there for so many years and have gone through so many employees...still, it's bullshit. i'm a valuable resource, i'm good at what i do and i get compliments all the time from people telling me how helpful i am.

i hate retail.

if you have so many chits, your boss wouldn't have a problem with you taking off the next week and you driving down here to deliver them to me yourself

yeah unfortunately in my expereince this kinda thing can happen in all sectors, not just retail. My boss has told me repeatedly that all his clients and collegues have commented I'm wonderful and my customer service is great, but yesterday I was told by him that I have an attitude problem. I also love when employers try to say things like "oh we're family here and you should feel free to tell us how you feel." Fucking bullshit. the bottom line is business and everyone is expendable (unless maybe your a specialist of some sort).

Wow, talk about treating employees like crap.

Everyone gets sick, but it seems like your employers either don't get that, or just dont care and they just want to get as much work out fo you as they can. Which is unfair. It's also really not fair for them to make you feel like you're obligated to be there at the crack of a whip. Not cool.
