View Full Version : Who is or was the best drummer

Seriously, My votes go to Tim alexander of Primus. I still listen to his drumming and my jaw remains dropped. You listen to his fills, the rolls, you might think he's inhuman. Great mixture being that Les Claypool is the frontman which leads me to the same thoughts as he pounds on that bass.
Hopefully, I can make this a difficult decision for you because for one thing. I play bass. I mainly focus my attention to the drummer when I listen to music, such as how will I strum around it.
If you don't play bass, that's cool. The drummer is the mofo that gets your head bobbing at least.
My runners up are:
John Bohnham. Of course, he was the shit back then. He had his set tightened to the perfect sound and is also the main influence to the recent drummers.
Neil Peart of Rush..Sad story he has. I think he releases his events on the drumset nowadays which makes Rush that much more enjoyable. His drumming has been superior but it seems that after his heartbreaking experience, it's become inferior. My heart goes out to him and he's got one of the best lead man of all times.
Chad Smith of RHCP..He once played a 200 piece set. Rythmaticly. I heard it, it was awesome. Not just that, the guy knows his skins..
I've got many more in mind, just too drumnk to think of them, help me out...

I think Chad Smith is a pretty good drmmer as well. He's consistantly good and I'm never worried about a RHCP album having bad drumming or doing something out of character or just stupid.
I like Travis Barker from Blink 182/Transplants/Box Car Racer. He adds something to those bands that makes them stick out in my mind from other bands. I'm not sure how to describe it either. He's just good with the sticks.
I like Derek from the band From First to Last. He has good ability and also offers backup vocals to some of the songs. I like the double kicking he does.
But, none of those three really deserve to be considered the best drummer, IMO. I know I might be criticized for my choice, but Ringo from the Beatles is my selection for best drummer. not because he was a member of the biggest band the world has seen so far, but because he had tremendous skill. His work post-Beatles is very good and he can do more than play drums. Alas, I'm in the minority here, but it's my opinion.

IMO. I know I might be criticized for my choice, but Ringo from the Beatles is...
You might as well have mentionned that dude from AC/DC as one of the best drummers ever if you chose Ringo Starr. Ringo seemed to be the only classic drummer you've mentionned.
What about Keith Moon from The Who?
or perhaps John Bonham from Led Zepplin?
All these new age rock/alt drummers you've chosen are good i will admit, but they had to start somewhere...and chances are it wasn't 'Ringo from the Beatles' more than not.

thank you, in order to slap skins for ac/dc it must be kick drum, high hat, snare and occasional cymbal crash. Nothing more, noting less. I've never liked drum patterns of them.
But the songs of the Beatles, I can't ever complain of how the drumming has fit in amongst my journeys of lsd.

lars ulrich is a plain drummer... he was at this peak during ...AJFA and just got lazy from there on.
you can't really choose a "best" drummer but some that have impressed me include:
thomas lang, jojo mayer, flo mounier(sp), dave lombardo, paul bostaph, joey jordison..

ah but i have, i have several primus albums, i first heard them on suck on this, i was like 'fuck, this is the music ive been waiting for!!!' i agree tim is very good. i saw em live a few years ago, was cool. tim may be a fuckin excellent drummer, but i reckon danny carey is better, in originality and complex rhythms.

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I don't think John Bonham was actually that great a drummer. Yes he was good, but not great. What he had going for him more than anything else was the fact that he was such a big fucking guy, he could hit really fucking hard. But take that 'brute force' away and you're left with just a basic good drummer.

Outside of Bonham, Moon and that crowd I reckon: Nicko McBrain, Ginger Baker and Rob Hirst.

There are a lot of famous drummers, but also there are quite a few who show up, blow your mind, pack and go home....
Jim Keltner
Stan Lynch (original Tom Petty drummer...Damn the Torpedoes etc)
Mitch Mitchell
Kenny Aronoff ....(that little bald head guy who used to drum with John Cougar)
an endless list really. Heres my favs
Charlie Watts drumming is ingrained in my soul, thats a very good thing.
Ringo's is all about fun, and that's cool.
But Keith Moon was like an alien visiting the planet on a mission(y) ! He is the winner.
Fast drumming bores the fuck out of me.

sorry, I could disagree. You want basic drummers, you get Ringo Star or Simon Wright. Both are good but if you listen, it's very basic.
If you watch Bonham play, he's not pounding on the drums as you say. He's very precise in his fills and makes good use of all his equipment throughout each performance.

Wilson's good, and he's a damn funny individual, but he's got some serious temo issues when not playing to a click track. like, worse than Keith Moon after the drink and drugs got to him and they had to tape the headphones to his face so he'd play in time.
I'm really suprised that the Neil Peart/Mike Portnoy debate hasn't come up, or maybe I havet been looking close enough

^So you're measuring how good a drummer is by their speed?
Playing fast doesn't automatically mean you play good, IMHO. How tight and the drummers ability to play advanced rythms scores a lot higher in my book.
Just my two cents.
ericlee
04-10-2006, 09:58 AM
yeah, I hate speed drummers, as someone mentioned up there somewhere, fast drumming is boring.
There's really no talent to it. Almost all of the same drum patterns are full of repitition.

He's a hell of a lot more than just a "speed thrash drummer". While it's true he is one of the fastest in the world, he is an innovator. A true artist at his craft. Even on a recording, his drum is as overpowering as it is undeniably him. Slayer often runs the gamet as far as tempo several times throught a single song.
Just trying to shout out someone I respect that was yet to be mentioned.
I wouldn't title Lombardo as a speed trash drummer, in fact, he's very precise and skilled at what he does. Also, being that he's been around for 20 years and still going at it, he's very well granted the title of Veteran of the Trade. I'm just getting older and my music style has been taken to the more mellow side of music. I'm personally saying that I think it's boring.
There's plenty of bands in the speed metal catagory that have very talented drummers. Even some of the bands that I really could care less for such as Dream Theatre, Testament and alot of others.
I'm actually starting to get into a little jazz, older jazz and all of the drummers are very tight and skilled as well.
