im sure this has been asked before, but what were your initial thoughts after hearing TT5B for the first time? i was still loving the sampling and layers of PB and Hello Nasty, so when i first listened to TT5B i really thought it sounded empty. i still think its sounds very plain. anyone else feel this way?

its just that i love PB and Hello Nasty (CYH is my #1) because of all the different sounds and layers of, dont know how else to describe it. feels like they put a little more effort and fun into it.

anyone else got an opinion?

I promised myself before the album that i wouldnt compare it to the others, so i enjoyed it throughly and still do for that matter.

I loved it one week before the release! Driving around in my car, playing it full blast.

I think when people try to compare things to the past, they pick out the negative things first

The lyrics on tt5b is top notch, I love the beats. In the summer of 2004, nothing was better!

I generally say I got into the Beastie Boys when TT5B came out. Truthfully, it was a little afterwards, and it had nothing to do with TT5B at all. I was bored of everything in my record collection and wanted something completely different. I was at JB Hi Fi one day browsing and hit upon the Beastie Boys section. They'd always been a well-respected group in my sphere; I mean, I could only recollect good things I'd heard about the band. And I knew that LTI was celebrated. Anyway, I listened to that and was actually pretty disappointed. Not due to the lyrical content- which I figured was obviously pretty exaggerated, but mostly didn't listen much to it- but just because it didn't stand out at first, maybe because it wasn't smooth like most hip hop I'd heard. I kept listening to it anyway, coming back to it, and I realised I was actually enjoying it- but it was a limited enjoyment, I wasn't that excited. Regardless, I bought a second hand copy of the LTI VHS.

Anyway, at Borders (this is turning into a god damn advertisement for the places I shop at) I looked at the Beasties section and figured TT5B was my best bet- I loved its cover and it was the latest album (I figured it must logically be the furthest away from LTI). Anyway, shit, Ch-Check it Out amazed me. I loved that song! Jesus, it like hit me straight away. That, coupled with Car Thief, is my favourite song ever. I still love it. When I'm in a slow kind of out-of-it mood it gets me all ADDish. But every song on it stuck out! Song after song after song, I loved, couldn't find fault.

So, yeah, it's still my most-cherished Beasties album (after an entire year and a half!...ha). It's also the album I probably empathise with most because it comes from 2004 (I was seven when Hello Nasty was released). I just think it sounds good.

I had waited 6 years for TT5B, so I hyped it and built it up in my mind as damn near close to the second coming, so it disappointed me after the first listen. But after waiting that long, just about anything would have. But after successive listens, I came to love the album. It's lacking a little, lyrically. But then again, lyrical skill has never been the 'Boys strong suit. But I love the old school beats, the goofy rhymes, and the political stance. Overall...amazing album. (y)

They took it back to the five burroughs on that album. Old School beats. Simple and hard hitting. I mean listen to the intro to 3 the hard way. Hard hitting and very effective beats.
Reminds me of watching Wild Style or some of those old school hip hop movies.

I had a bootleg copy one week before the release ( i know i know im a bad person). But I was the first one at the mall to buy it from FYE. I know this because i went the night before and beg and pleaded to them to let me have it.(cause i knew releases usually get there at least one day prior before put on the shelves)

After talking to the cashiers and stockers who only wanted to play by the rules, I got to talk to this chick who was the assistant manager. She seen my beastie shirt and listened to me beg and plead and finally let me have it. She was like "i can get fired for this, but here ya go".

So after buying it I came out of the store, took the album out of the bag and held it olympic style in one hand over my head until i reached the entrance/exit doors.

I know all this sounds weird, especially since i already had a bootleg copy, but for some reason I thought that i had to be the first one their at the mall to buy it, because i felt no one deserved to have it more than me at that location. In fact, I KNOW thats true, because im a total nut!

i can understand the minimalism aspect of the album and im not trying to directly compare two albums either. each album, for me, has a totally different feel to it, especialy when i jumped from LTI to PB. each album does its own thing and does it well. I guess im just the oddball, TT5B just wouldnt make my top 50 albums list, or top 3 for a beasties only list. thats just me tho.

The first time I heard it was the first time I even heard the Beastie Boys, and I obviously liked it a lot because it intruiged me to buy the rest of there albums and I'm still a fan today!! I think To The Five Boroughs sounds oldschool, and I love oldschool hip-hop a lot. Also I think their rhymes flow the best on this album, and it shows their rhyming capabilities, even though we already knew they are some fucking awesome emcees. I personally like this album a lot, although it's not my "favorite", I still listen to it and there are some really good beats. I prefer their more raw hip-hop style like in Ill Communication. But like I said, it's an all oldschool rap album and I love to just listen to it. (y)

Also, I forgot to mention! Hello Nasty is the album I've been listening to a lot lately. I really dig it's versatality, and the rap songs on there have the best beats and coolest lyrics I've ever heard! The other songs on there are really chill to listen to, and whenever I'm in the mood to get all spaced out I listen to them all the time. Actually, I think I can say the same thing about most of their albums. Honestly, all of them are so fucking good it's hard to explain.
By the way, excuse my cussing. :o

wow it's like you scraped the words right off my tongue....or y'know,
pulled the words right out of my mouth, same thing.

i like tt5b because it sounds so refreshing so after a while listening to paul's boutique and check your head, it switches back over to that...same for hello nasty. i don't understand why those are the two most underrated albums. maybe y'all should check your head!

and ill communication i think is underrated sometimes...it's like my favorite album now because of the vibe and the new sound it brings and the best songs like "sabotage" with the coolest videos and i don't even know what to say to prove its greatness...i could babble on about every album and it just wouldn't make sense
i don't even think this post makes any sense...i was trying to make with the deep intelligent thoughtful post type deal, but it sorta backfired.

by the way, you're excused :D

Haha yeah I agree. (y) See the part in bold, like you didn't heh. THAT'S one of the reasons why I love the Beastie Boys so much. I don't know how to explain it, but EVERY fucking album has that and it just puts me in such a good mood you know? They're so talented. I think people get that vibe from them because they're keeping it real and being themselves. I love them I love them I love them I love them!!! Whoa that was creepy, I just spazzed out. :o

That actually made me think! And I came to this conclusion. Fans should stop trying to explain how the Beastie Boys really are, because really, we don't know what's in the mind of a Beastie. (!) (lb) I remember Yauch saying in an interview, I'm not sure when it was, and it's not the exact way he said it but he said something like a fan came up to him and thanked him for the music. And he thought it was interesting because they actually weren't making it for the fans, they were making the music for themselves or something. What the hell am I talking about? Great, now I'ma have to find that interview or I'm gonna go crazy. Alright I'm done with my beastie fillibuster now.

I think TT5B is the least best album of the beastie boys...the rhymes are good though, but it doesnt have the "FEELING". You know, bboys became too altruist.

I JUST NOW NOTICED SOMETHING!!!! (sorry for the annoying capslock) The album covers explains the vibes of the albums, did anyone notice that!!! HOLY FUCK and even the album titles. That was sneaky. Like, even the inside of the covers and stuff. I sound so much like an idiot right now. But seriously.

Licensed to Ill: New York 80s party vibe

Paul's Boutique: Oldschool New York

Check Your Head: Black and white, classy, and the inside cover really gives you that... I can't explain it! Hah.

Ill Communication: Punk rockish and hardcore, even the rap. GAH it's hard to explain.

Hello Nasty: Spacey intergalactic feeling (Duh)

To The Five Boroughs: Modern New York, but mixed with oldschool hip hop so I guess it's like a modern version of Paul's Boutique! Because the inside cover of Paul's Boutique all folds out into a picture of New York a long time ago, and
TT5B folds out into a picture of New York now, and the colors are even perfect. How do they do it?!

I'm so confused, I just had a mind-blowing experience. I mean I knew that before of course, but I didn't think that much into it you know. :o

I think your thread here pretty much explains how good to the 5 boroughs is. You loved it when you listened and it made you go buy the rest of their albums.

Id rather see people get into the beasties while listening to tt5b than i would with a kid hearing fight for your right for the first time..ya know

When I first heard Ch-check it out after their other albums, I was like wha….? That’s their new song? It was not what I was expecting, I’ll give em that. I didn’t like it or even when I got the album as much as the others. It didn’t bore me like I could listen to it the whole way through and hear the songs again and I still can, it’s really catchy and I didn’t think it was as ‘fun’ as the others but it was in a different way. It’s not bad, just not their best. It also doesn’t have as much of a lasting impact the way that their other albums did though it’s a good ‘party’ album.

But I think it could be like that’s where they are at then and this is where they are at now, and I know that I can’t explain the Beastie Boys only they can and this is all speculation but it may not as ‘deep’ because with their older albums they were probably going through stages where they were learning and evolving and feeling really connected to the world or whatever which they expressed in their music whereas they are probably more comfortable and content and fulfilled where they are right now and so it’s just them having fun and goofing around, which is okay and works too.

Oh yeah, I love the titles and the covers and stuff as well coz yeah, it really does express what it’s all about well. This sounds crazy but does anyone ever see them as having ‘colours?’ It’s really crazy but for me and probably also coz of the artwork CYH is golden and brown like autumn, morning and earthy, kind of gritty, Paul’s Boutique is purple like drugs and alleyways and creativity and Hello Nasty is like green like futuristic, spacey, technology and earthy and spiritual at the same time and also kind of golden and sometimes pink. Except for Licensed to Ill probably coz it’s all about attitude, not as layered and wacky stories but kind of sandy like a western, Ill Communication is like its title, it’s more obscure and fuzzy and gritty and To The Five Boroughs is like the cover, blue, white and weirdly pink in a really modern way, New Yorky way but it feels more like a blueprint of New York and just fun music rather than a whole I don’t know…scope I guess. (If that makes sense)

When Hello Nasty came out it made a much bigger and lasting impression on me than To The 5 Boroughs. But people change. Generally most releases of my favourite artists that came out after 2000 were not so exciting.
I like listening to TT5B but if I wasn't listening to them earlier I wouldn't have started because of this album.

 That about TT5B is SO true! Yeah, you really can sometimes connect the music with colors, I think I will always remember An Open Letter as mostly black - white.
But then comes the question is An Open Letter colored in my mind as mostly black - white because of the song itself, OR the video. I think the answer is that the Boys themselves feel the colors of their music and make the videos and artwork by that feel.
Whoa, this colouring thing really made me think!!

P.S. In A World Gone Mad is definitely red :D :D

everyone always seems to be posting on this board when im not here. but im kinda surprised that none of you are totally bashing the music i listen to. lots of people i know think im weird cause i listen to too much music, maybe i do, thats ok with me!

and yes, CYH and IC can be hard to describe, i guess i would just say they picked up their instruments and started playin around and came up with some pretty good stuff! i dont know how else to explain it. you dont neccesarily go into the studio, sit down and play an entire song. like the X-ecutioners said "all good ideas happen on accident" i think thats very true, especially for me.

in the end TT5B isnt really a bad album, just didnt hit me as "great" or "unique".

I hate it when people diss the music you like, because even though people have that attitude and won't admit it hurts your feelings, it's actually very insulting when somebody says the type of music you like sucks. So I never do that, no matter what kind of music it is and if I like it or not. Because there's no such thing as "good" music, it's all in your opinion. Like somebody might say "Oh I like Kanye West!" then another person will be like "Ew you like him, rap sucks! I like Keith Urban." Then person number one will be like "Ew country sucks." You know what I'm saying? It's just people's personal listening tastes, and what they're biologically attracted too. It's not their fault. By the way, a lot of the music you listed I like too. But then again I listen to everything! So, yeah. I listen to music too much too. :D
