saw my brother's band, Akina Adderley & The Vintage Playboys (http://www.aavpsoul.com) at a benefit concert in Austin.
they have really come together as a unit in the last two years. they have a three man horn section, a drummer and percussionist, dueling guitars, and a blind bassist.
all led by a firecracker of a bandleader/lead singer/jazz royalty...

"Pearl Jam" last night...oh boyee that was fun...first time I'd seen them at festival setting since Lollapalooza...Ed was back on the vino, slugging from a bottle of red...which concerned me a little cause when I've seen him drink in the past he had a tendency to mumble...Stone Gossard appeared to be really into it as well...the set choice was fantastic...this was the 6th time I've seen them and I'll keep going as long as they keep being...

i forgot to mention this last week, went to my first gig in eons last week.
Orbital at manchester academy. amazing.
apparently some of the younger crew who went werent happy but to be fair there were a lot of older people there and they (we) all loved it, before they split up the live show was pretty formulaic and this time they mixed up all the order and revamped a lot of stuff and it was brilliant

Does "a while ago" mean in the early 80's? I didn't even know that 7 seconds were still together.

Nashville Pussy, Reverend Horton Heat and Motorhead last night…I may be getting to old for this shit…well on a Monday night any way’s…Nashville Pussy was nice raunch, the Rev’s schtick has grown old on me and Motorhead was just fuck’n loud…but seeing Lemmy in person was a kick…the most entertaining thing was watching the audience from the balcony…old time metal heads, speed metal freaks, skaters, punks and posers…

2nd time i've seen them here in perth. these guys are just so intense when they play live. no half arseing by any of them. when you read/hear reviews about the unimaginable energy you get in their shows, it's always true - they never disappoint. dave lombardo is fuckin' MACHINE!
9 upside down crosses out of 10: if they played a bit longer and left angel of death till the very last song, it woulda been a ten.
megadeth were alright, i guess. i don't follow them that hard but they didn't sound shit. i thought mustaine was the riff master and shit: he didn't do that many solos? meh doesn't matter. i can see the appeal... just not for a metallihead like myself.
6 new band members out of 10.

I saw them a couple of weeks ago. Good solid fun. There are always a ton of shows to see here in the fall so my dance card is full. I think most bands avoid coming here in summer and winter because it's so awful.
Anyhow, tonight was Metallica. It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Yeah, it's a cheesy arena show but it's a good one as far as that goes. I was surrounded by suburban guys in their 20s who had never seen Metallica before. It was fun to watch them having fun. Metallica has giant flames that shoot out of the floor. I felt a blast of really hot air on my face every time it happened. Scary hot. And then I'd worry about the guys whenever they would walk near those flame venty places in the floor. They must trust their crew. Hetfield's current stage patter is the most genuinely appreciative stage patter I've heard in years. I hope they are truly enjoying themselves. If they're not, then they're really good actors.
Tomorrow is David Sedaris. :)

8/10 - they played an acoustic set during which they played a drum track on one of the songs (). Would've given it a 9 if not for that and the bitchy dude who yelled at me for talking to my boyfriend and my "voice carrying." What an elitist prick.

WTF. I hope I'm reading that wrong. It drives me CRAZY when people talk at First Avenue. It pains me to think that you're one of those women. (Unless you want to go stand at the back of the balcony behind the glass--no one who wants to listen to the music stands back there so talk away behind the glass.)
I'm really on my high horse about this lately. Talking women have ruined more concerts for me in the past year or so. I have this theory that it's better to see bands with male-dominated audience. They might get drunk but they tend to listen to the music. Women seem to go to concerts to socialize. And trendy bands are the worst for talking women. I try to stand near men whenever possible.

BTW, sorry to be a bitch. I should be prohibited from posting in the middle of the night. I know you're just there having fun. :o
If the concert matters to me, I'll tell people they're bothering me. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they didn't know. I was in the second row of a Radiohead concert last year and the people in the front row were talking (the woman turned her head toward me to talk in her partner's ear so she was trying to be quiet but she was talking right in my face). I asked them to either stop talking or leave. They decided to leave during the 2nd or 3rd song. Two concerts later, I was in the 5th row and a woman next to me tried to answer her phone during the first song. I told her that there would be absolutely no phone use while Radiohead were on stage. She barely moved a muscle after that, so I probably said it more forcefully than I intended. Those were two of the best concerts I saw last year so it was worth it to be vocal instead of silently fuming and going home mad.
To my limited credit, I let a lot slide. I'm STILL pissed off about the assholes next to me at Wilco a couple of weeks ago, but because Wilkins is a shithole, I didn't say anything to them.

SERIOUSLY. That shit drive me nuts. I am hear to see a concert, people. I would think you are too since you are at a show. Talking, especially during the main act, in the middle of their SONGS? And I'm not saying a quick chat about "I'm going to the bathroom" or "this is awesome". I've seen full blown, long conversations where the people aren't even looking at the stage or paying attention. And they were right next to me or right in front of me so all I could hear is their voices over the music I was there to see.

That's really freaky. If you had bought the tickets, we would have been sitting next to each other. I wanted to see him with my local orchestra, but the show was sold out. I got into Seattle last week, went straight to a coffee shop, read a local free paper, and saw the ad for the Seattle Symphony. I got on my laptop, and bought some of the last founders level tickets. It was divine intervention or something. I dragged a family member to the concert with me.
It looks like Rufus Wainwright is coming soon. I'm jealous that I won't get to see him. I've only seen him solo. Go see Rufus!!!

J.Cole was decent, far from boring.

N.E.R.D. was entertaining, Pharrell knows how to put on a show.
Jay-Z...that man tore up the place.

saw Shellac and The Ex last night at a new venue that opened a few months ago. It smelled like a hotel room. http://www3.timeoutny.com/chicago/blog/out-and-about/2009/10/lincoln-hall-tour-gallery/
It was real fancy in there, almost too fancy. The sound was so good, it was outrageous. You could hear a pin drop on stage, you could hear individual conversations in the crowd. I felt like I was on some kind of musical spaceship.
Shellac was impeccable (although my boyfriend said they played everything a little bit slower than normal. ?)
The Ex was pretty awesome. The guest trumpet player was phenomenal, I thought all of them were going to explode, they were so full of energy.
I think I might've had more fun if the place wasn't so grown up, but I guess I'm a grown up now anyway. :(

well, there still were empty plastic beer cups all over the floor at least.
All the musicians were in their 40's, so the crowd was older and a bit more reserved, attentive.
there are still plenty of dirty ass places around, this joint is catering to the aging "alternative" music lover.
It was weird to be in there because it used to be an old cheap cinema that you could drink alcohol at. the kind of place with hand-drawn showtimes in the window. t'was odd to be in a refashioned super modern version of the same space.

I've seen like 6 Bad Religion shows in the past 2 weeks or so... damn these guys still bring it. They're doing this 30yr anniversary thing and yeah... Every night opening with 'Do what you want' that I scream verbatim... then closing with "Sorrow" every night which is quite possibly one of thee best songs ever written imho.

That is a great place to see a show, I saw Phoenix there a few months ago, perfect venue. So the xx didn't rise above their album? I should of cut work and gone just to shake up the place with my special manic chicken dance. I was working up in Anacortes last week and didn't get back to beautiful unincorporated Everett until 9:30PM.

Night #2 of Soulive at the Paradise last night. I give it a 9/10. Great set of Beatles tunes. The only thing that would have made this a 10/10 show would have been to have the Shady Horns with them again. Thursday night was just on fire with them!
Soulive are currently out on tour...if they come through your city I highly recommend seeing them!

Fuck Buttons. Trinity centre in Briz, it's an old church but the ceiling is low so the sound was good. Considering it's essentially two guys on stage twiddling knobs most of the time they are great to watch, they're loving what they do. Loud and lovely. 10

I guess I'd say no, they didn't rise above but they still sounded good. I love the album so it was overall a (y).
Saw Broken Bells at the Market on Tuesday. Really dug their opener (Morning Benders). Sort of like what I thought Vampire Weekend might be by their second CD.
Bells set was good, I predicted Danger Mouse would come out with an apple laptop and nothing else but they had a full band, three guitars, bass, trumpet player, etc. and DM alternately played drums and guitar. James Mercer sounded great. They covered Crimson and Clover which was kinda eh for me. I mean it's a great song but it has been covered by so many, and they didn't really do anything new with it.

Saw Rufus Wainwright 2 days ago in Amsterdam.
Wow. Just...wow!
The first half of the show was very solemn. Just him, his piano, a large videoscreen and absolute silence from the audience.
There was no applause allowed in between and he just played Songs For Lulu in its entirety. It was beautiful and weird and I'm amazed at how someone can play such technically difficult things on a piano and still keep singing that perfectly.
Second half of the show was more relaxed and jokey and he told a lot of strange and funny anecdotes and played some older songs. And fucked up a couple of times by forgetting his lyrics, but seeing that it was a long tour and he's still coping with the death of his mother (Kate McGarrigle) and was just generally being awesome, so I forgive him for that.

Neither was I, but for me it really worked live. It's certainly different, with all the silence and dramatics and video-art, but it's an interesting experience.
But after that part of the show he does like over an hour of a 'normal' show, so you shouldn't be concerned.

They should bring the equipment on over here, to Seattle. We have electrical outlets and stages. Seattle has a transportation system in place, I can ride my bicycle to the show. Thousands can walk to the show. We have beer, food and women.

i suppose i should put down something on here about glasto and the bands i can remember seeing:
Rolf Harris- genius - the man has an MC and is a supreme entertainer
Stranglers - really good - full hits package
Willie Nelson - not my cuppa tea really but he didnt half belt thru the tunes
Snoop Dogg - funny, funky and fucking brilliant
Fake Blood - Dj Set - excellent
Hot Chip - bit lightweight but not as bad as some reports of their live performances that i have heard
Gorillaz - utter wank. Flat as a pancake, despite all the guest stars
Reef - all right
Cymbals Eat guitars - all right actually decided to go to John Peel stage and catch a few things i had never heard, these sounded a bit like ride at times
Field Music - shit, pretentious self indulgent 80's toss
The Orb - pretty good but a bit up and down stop start kind of thing
Scissor Sisters - the wife likes them i dont, pretty meh although i did get excited when Kylie came on
Muse - fucking amazing, i am converted
Faithless - meh
Stevie wonder - everything i imagined and more
i did see a few more things drifting about like Giggs and davendra bernhardt and a couple bands whose names i forget but didnt see full sets and spent some time watching comedians and circus acts and stuff as well but you dont want to hear about them

9/10
If you read this, did the video screen have all kinds of eyes on it? I saw Rufus last night and the eyes freaked me out. He's so talented and has the right to try different things. I was glad to see something new. I thought that the first part went on too long and I had to shut my eyes sometimes because images on the screen sometimes got to me (I was really close to the stage). But the show was certainly memorable.
His sister opened for him. I didn't like a lot of what she did but she did one song that was jaw-droppingly amazing. She came out again with Rufus in his second half and during his encore. They're good together. Because the first half of Rufus's show had no talking, he was much less funny than usual but he's still adorable and charming. (He went through rehab here years ago so he always mentions that.) His sister was awfully funny even when I didn't like some of her songs, so overall it was a great night, even though it's odd to have that dark weird stuff right in the middle of the loose, amusing bits.
I saw Louden Wainwright earlier this year when he opened for someone else so it's been a Wainright year.
I agree with the 9/10.

KRS One - London - 2nd October.
Fairly solid set, not the best performance I've seen by him, but his shows are always worth a look if you're a fan. Had Supernatural as his hype man, I'm not a huge Supernatural fan but he did his thing.
If anything I think he played too many of his big tunes too early in the set in an attempt to keep the crowd hype, but unfortunately there wasn't quite enough of the hardcore hip hop contingent in attendance to really appreciate what was going down.
Otherwise, I had a great time and the crowd seemed really polite and friendly instead of stiff and snobbish like far too many of the gigs I've been to recently, which was refreshing. Overall I'd still give it about 8 out of 10.
I've had a really slow 2010 for good gigs, but other notable gigs this year include:-
The Ettes - a month or two ago - wicked set, really enjoyed seeing them.
Wolf People - again within last few months, tight performance, worth checking out.
The Pixies - in the summer sometime? - First time I've got to see them, and my sister sorted me out with a backstage pass! - met everyone except Black Francis!:) - seasoned professionals played a solid set - wicked night!
Can't remember what else I've seen this year, I'm sure there were one or two other good gigs that I can't recall right now?

The almighty U2 last night in Edmonton…a set rich with Achtung Baby and Zooropa material which was my fave era…tons of fun…and they appeared to be enjoying themselves…wonderful, spine tingling as they always are…”Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” was absolutely killer and the nights biggest surprise...my other fave was "All I want" which slid into "Needle and the damage done" and a weird moment where some lady came onstage and recited Neil Young lyrics like a poetry reading...I get a feeling this may have been the last time, may be the last time ,I don’t know...(y)

I was about to see the Fleet Foxes last wednesday in Berlin. It started with Robin Pecknold himself doing his soundcheck (kind of undercover though, because most of the people didn't seem to realise it was him).
Anyway - the concert started just great, but it was only when they played their 4th song, when my dad called me to say that my daughter won't stop crying. So, my husband and me had to go way to early and missed "The Shrine / An Argument" which I wanted to hear live at all costs - well, nearly all costs - our daughter had priority in the end. But the 4 songs we heard were absolutely brilliant and I hope to get a chance to see them soon again!

I very randomly saw Bryan Adams at the Sydney Opera House a few weeks ago. I liked him as a kid - I mean literally, in the car...6 or 7 with his best of on cassette on family journeys to Scotland - but aside from drunken sing-a-longs to '69 on particularly dodgy nights out that's been it these past few years.
HOWEVER! It was pretty fucking good. I went with some Canadians I'm friends with. Obviously the venue is prestigious which probably helped, and we had really good seats. The gig was all acoustic, which sound-wise sounded fucking suberb. He opened with Run To You and already my expectations were surpassed. It was also nice remembering a lot of those old songs, which, when you take away the gloss and the 80's cheese, are actually quite good little tunes.
He played tonnes of newer stuff too, but it was all pretty good to be fair, nothing groundbreaking but well performed. He was quite funny actaully between songs, but I guess it's a well rehearsed routine by now. Still, fair play, I laughed a lot at his old Australian tour stories. I'm not going to go out and buy anything, but it was definitely different and I'm really glad I went. He was also in very good voice, which given how old he must be now was pretty impressive.
So all in all, a surprising 9/10!

I suppose i should say that i went to see Peter Kay at MEN arena last week.
It was pretty funny and good atmosphere. cant remember much really apart from he got presented an award at the end by Gary barlow and all the ladies went batshit at that point.
Kay did his usual nostalgic observation stuff and he just has a funny face as well as all the throwaway gags at the start such as:

Wife "I dont like ringing you when you're at work"

I saw Wilco three times in the past week. Two of the shows tie for my favorite show this year.
This is their best ever tour. The lineup has really jelled. And I love the new album. I'm thankful they still play smallish venues.

Yeah, they were up here last week. $40 for a ticket, and not knowing who was going to show... I didn't roll out.
Everyone was there minus Rae and Ghost.
Rza, Gza, Meth, U God, Deck, & Cappa were all there.
My friends told me it was quite the show!

i knew rae wasnt going to be there. he posted on twitter saying hes in the studio and sorry he can't make it out.
then when i got to willcall it had a sign saying rae and ghost werent going to be there. which i wasn't too surprised because ik ghost and rza are feuding, pretty sure theres some lawsuits going on.
but gza just unexpectedly no showing kinda sucked. musta just not been feeling it, or his old ass just passed out.
either way though like i said still a good show.

It's odd, because my friend Mark got to chop it up with GZA backstage and said he was mad cool. Mark is in the t-shirt business and is going to make GZA's European Tour shirts. Pretty cool.
I hear that Ghost and Rae are just not fucking with anything RZA is around. Sad really. For $40 I'd like to see the entire group.
On another note, the show was on Tuesday. I guess they stayed in town for the day because on Wed nights is Rap Night. Around 10ish RZA walks in the door chills in the back, daps some peoples, watches some sets, gives people pounds and bounced. Dope.

Saw Cut Chemist at the start of the year, was dope. Caught DJ Krush on his 20th Anniversary tour, was dope in such a different way. Saw KRS recently and that was epic, just mics and decks. Caught Prince over the weekend and it blew my wig back.
There are no ratings on any of these. :(

jay-z and kanye west at O2 arena. this was a few weeks ago. they killed it. just those two stalking a massive stage. n-words was performed 6 times. favourite tune was all of the lights. wished jay did some songs off kingdom come album.
a$ap rocky at electric ballroom. this was last night. i may have been the oldest person there. alot of camo, black snap backs, retro jordans and dudes dressed like theophilus london. set only last about 50 mins but holy shit he whipped the crowd into a frenzy. highlight was the whole thing but goldie and peso in particular smashed it. for a guy with no official album yet, alot of people know all the lyrics to all his songs. that lil b brangadang.

The Stone Roses. Heaton PArk, Manchester.
Amazing atmosphere. Great sound, cracking lights. Band were really on form, sounded better than when i first saw them years ago. Really tight, Ian Brown did a pretty good job of singing..for him. 2 hours no encore and it flew by.
Brilliant. Bring on the third album! Although i am not holding my breath.

Been wanting to check out a show there. How is it as a music venue?
Last show I saw was Afghan Whigs at the Showbox. Greg Dulli worked the crowd like a master. The only other person I have ever seen own the stage, the crowd and the rest of the band like that was Prince.
Afghan Whigs officially join the Beasties, Zep and deftones as my top musical obsessions of all time.

Saw Kendrick a few weeks back. Best hip-hop show I've ever been to. Crowd was live as fuck, too. It was like watching eminem in his prime. (y)
