Thank you moderator for erasing the ignorant reply that was posted here.

"I would like to explain the meaning of compassion, which is often misunderstood. Genuine compassion is based not on our own projections and expectations, but rather on the rights of the other: irrespective of whether another person is a close friend or an enemy, as long as that person wishes for peace and happiness and wishes to overcome suffering, then on that basis we develop genuine concern for his or her problem. This is genuine compassion. Usually when we are concerned about a close friend, we call this compassion. This is not compassion; it is attachment.
Even in marriage, those marriages that last only a short time do so because of attachment - although it is generally present - but because there is also compassion. Marriages that last only a short time do so because of a lack of compassion; there is only emotional attachment based on projection and expectation. When the only bond between close friends is attachment, then even a minor issue may cause one's projections to change. As soon as our projections change, the attachment disappears - because that attachment was based solely on projection and expectation.

It is possible to have compassion without attachment - and similarly, to have anger without hatred. Therefore we need to clarify the distinctions between compassion and attachment, and between anger and hatred. Such clarity is useful in our daily life and in our efforts toward world peace. I consider these to be basic spiritual values for the happiness of all human beings, regardless of whether one is a believer or a nonbeliever." HHDL

My first time to NYC was to come here and attend this teaching held at the beacon theater. I had bought 3 tickets for "us" which turned out to be "me."
It was a strange mix of people lined up around the blocks waiting to get in. Some incredibly impatient and complaining often, some talking boastingly about how many times they had "seen" HHDL, and those who were simply waiting.
I'd brought a gift to the teaching for HHDL and tried like crazy to get it to him. Silly, I know.. I asked one person who asked another and another and then returned to say "no gifts." I was stunned.. and wondered what the h*ll I was going to do with the yards of silk I'd purchased.. (I can hardly get a button to stay on let alone do something with 3 yrds of silk.) I scoped out the theater... Nothing. I pondered for a moment tossing the bag on the stage, and then being escorted by people who thought I was an attacker of HHDL, and scrapped the idea... I wrote a note to HHDL expressing gratitude and such and stuffed it in the bag with the silk..

When going through the theater giving up my thought of getting this silk to HHDL, I saw a monk from a monestary that I'd been at when I'd taken a few initiations for practice.. I knew he would be on stage and I asked that if he (being a monk) might be able to pass it onto hhdl. He said he would try to deliver the gift after the intermission. I don't know the outcome, but HHDL came out and mentioned something about "no gifts" on the tour.. You can imagine my shift downward in my seat with shifty eyes.. I understand that there were something like 3000 people there and that if he took gifts from us all he'd be stuffing a whole plane bulging full when he started the journey home.
For some reason there were a lot of cell phones going off during the teaching.. all I can saw is what...?the...f*ck? Maybe to some they came to see the novelty of the Dalai Lama, but, I came to listen to what the man has to say.
It was awesome to attend a teaching by HH and to come to see the wonderful city of NY. ( I looked all over for MCA, but I never saw him.)
I live here now and will be looking forward to boarding my subway to work..

He is visiting Israel right now, and will hold a big debate tommorow. That's pretty nice, we need more leaders like this guy.
