i say "musical" cause im not sure what else to call it among other songs, but anyways...
i was listening to song for junior, i dont know, instant death (right now) ect. and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to other bands or groups they might recommend similar to this style, that slower jazzy maybe lounge feeling, but not quite. not sure how to describe it. anyone?

"The Meters" is probably a good start for you.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000033GN/103-4946926-7649422?v=glance&n=5174

Then you've got bands like
The Crusaders,
Stevie Wonder,
Bobbi Humphrey,
Isaac Hayes,
James Brown,
Gil Scott Heron (my favorite) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002WAW/ref=m_art_li_1/103-4946926-7649422?s=music&v=glance&n=5174

The list goes on and I could get deeper and more obscure but the more I list the less you'll remember. You need to start buying records if you want to get into this type of music because a lot of the best stuff was never put on CD. Also, there's a dope journal out there called "Wax Poetics" that's dedicated to this type of music. Its deep, and when you first start reading it its probably going to be like reading another language but the more you learn the more familiar the content will become. Check it out. Issue 10 features the Beastie Boys.

In the Check Your Head/Ill Comm erra the Beasties were basically just copying their favorite shit. Bands like the ones named above. Once you get into the Hello Nasty era they start getting more original with the music, and its less comparable.

If you a want lounge feel, I'd reccomend Combustible Edison "I Swinger"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000035G8/103-4946926-7649422?v=glance&n=5174

The reason I'm giving you links is so you can listen to the song samples . . .

so far i like all of these suggestions. the problem with me is that i know what i like when i hear it but i dont know neccesarily where/who to look for, other than the funk/soul/jazz section. thanks for the stuff. the meters and james brown are a no brainer tho. bossa nova is fairly new to me too, and im picky so that dosnt help.

and ive only been collecting vinyl for a couple years now. and theres only one good record shop around here, Amoeba in SF is the next closest (i could live there i swear).

As far as collecting vinyl, have you ever hit up the local thrift/salvation army/hand me down store???? Sometimes you will come in contact with a gold mine of good shit, that other people tossed out as trash.... Usually 50cent to a dollar per record, you cant lose.... If you dont like it then save it untill you have enough to take back to the same store..... I got hundreds of dope vinyl from places like that....

yeah i used to go to a goodwill near my place and they were $1, but then after going there every other day for a month that raised the price to $2.50. not that big a deal, but kinda took the fun out of it.

has anyone watched the "scratch" dvd? that record shop Dj Shadow is in (the basement) is right here in sac, i didnt even know for the longest time. i soooooo want to go down in that basement, not even funny.

The instrumental bands I like are not known in the "mainstream", they are bands who play in festivals and don't have fans like a crowd.
But I recommend you search things of Pele and Hurtmold.
