yeah so i decided to take a camera with me on my walk to my super-shitty temporary job to make my day a bit sweeter and i thought i would share a bit of it with you. i'm sorry i couldn't make it more interesting and cool but there wasn't really a local i could trust who would take a picture of me humping some architecture, or something.

okay so here goes. it was a very grey and cold day in glasgow. forgive it.

i walk out my door, and turn left and these are the flats infront of me. everyone i know lives in tenements like these. i live in north kelvinside, which isn't quite maryhill [roughish] and isn't quite westend [posh] but student-friendly and affordable nonetheless. close to everything you need. just on the left there, can't see it, you will find the crosslands pub where robert carlyle in trainspotting is where he chucks the glass over the ledge.. i'm sure you will know it much better than i can explain it:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/3217280d.jpg

if i walk down queen margaret drive i walk pass the botanic gardens, which are being done-up right now. here's one of the conservatories. it's a crap picture cos it was rush hour and all the motorists were like "wtf?". it's getting done up cos all the fishies and frogs inside were um, dying. and stuff:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_0406.jpg

i live near bbc scotland. so i walk pass the, er, bbc scotland building:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/bbc.jpg

going down great western road and further along i come to the university campus where i used to go! aaahh, those were the days. here is the theatre, film and television department of the university of glasgow where i used to spend almost every waking hour. good times. i had my lectures in a church, dude:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_0409.jpg

i walk down kelvin way where you can get a better view of the actual uni. this pic is too small because em, i fucked up:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_0415.jpg

kelvingrove museum is right next to it, too. it's getting refurbished atm but it's one of the most visited museums in europe when it's, er.. open. i walk across the bridge where i snap this pic:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/trimkelvin.jpg

kelvin way runs adjacent to kelvingrove park, which is just awesome during night if you want gay sex or to hang yourself off the goalposts. or both! here is some sort of abandoned amphitheatre type thing which i have always found quite sad:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_0413.jpg

oh and some good old british humour outside the park! yeah that's right, cos tying someone's laces together and flinging their shoes up a very high place is totally hilarious!:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_0414.jpg

in the park now and i'm getting tired of explaining but here's some grafitti:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_0417.jpg

i get to work. i also run out of memory nearly so i dont take anymore pictures. instead, i save one for lunch. i sit in kelvingrove park with my mozzarella, tomato and basil sandwich and a cappucinno and try to keep warm. that's the university in the background! you've come a long way, kiddo, a long way. well.. 45 minutes to be precise:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_0420.jpg

gosh. that's a lot of pictures. sorry. but hey, i liked it.

i think my fave was the picture of the church where you had class. it's beautiful. i love looking at buildings.

you're right about that ampitheater -- it does look sad.

i'll have to try to remember to photodocument my daily journey. it won't be as beautiful as yours though.

Nice, yeahwho. I drive past that elephant twice a day.

And when the monorails got stuck together, that was comedy gold.

But I have to take a picture of the sign at the end of my block that says "High prostitution and drug area, your license plate is being recorded."

na§tee
02-24-2006, 11:44 AM
aw, thanks guys for the heads up :).
i'm sure all of your days will be equally beautiful. do it! i am sincerely interested in your locations - even when just the street signs are different, s'all good. loves it. you gotta not cheat and do it on a genuine day to work/college, however unspectacular it is tho, yuppers!

if i had work in a different part of the city i'd be travelling through a total ghetto, depending on the area. i was in one today - govan. rows and rows of houses all boarded up with just inches of trash in the garden. so.. different from where i live. it just so happened i got the really nice university areas near me in this job!

actually, i have new temp job starting in govan in about a week[with the fucking PO-LICE!] so i will definately take my camera on my way to work there. oh god! that would be a total slap in the face to any tourist.

i wish i could show you it when it's sunny, and lots more of the parks.
people sitting around, just chilling and erm.. chasing butterflies and doing dj sets. having bbqs. it's sweet. come round to mine for summer d00ds!

oh and like2drink, it's not quite a castle but i'll give you that, scotland does have some very beautiful old buildings. you have to go up north to the highlands for pure castle shit though. when i next visit my boyfriend i will take picture of a genuine one overlooking loch ness.
the university building and [i think], the kelvingrove museum there were designed by the guy who made the houses of parliament; dude apparently loved to make things look a lot older then they were. so, there you go. it's er.. still old though.

I gotta remember to do this on Monday!

Here they throw sneakers on wires outside this skateshop in the city, everytime they buy a new pair they throw the old ones in the air. Which reminds me, I still haven't taken a photo of the Beasties signatures on the wall at WE shop....

PhotoJournal: The Way to Work.

http://www.amprosoft.com/Journal/PJ-NextDoor.jpg
This is the scene outside my front door.

http://www.amprosoft.com/Journal/PJ-Bike.jpg
At the foot of the stairs is my trusty bike that has transported me more'n a thousand miles in the last couple years. It was a really good gift from a really good friend JimW.

http://www.amprosoft.com/Journal/PJ-LHS.jpg
A block away is the High School that I attended 18 to 22 years ago.

http://www.amprosoft.com/Journal/PJ-Playground.jpg
A couple miles toward work and I pass this play area for a day care center. The children don't get to play on grass, but at least they have colored the artificial surface green for them, to sort of almost remind them of grass. There is a busy highway that runs behind the playground so that their developing little lungs can get the monoxide that they need. Also there is a busy street that might as well be a highway that I ride my bike on to ensure that they get car exhaust from both directions. Plus there's a boat shop attached to the day care center for bonus random chemicals.

http://www.amprosoft.com/Journal/PJ-River.jpg
About a half mile later I get to ride along the mighty Niagara River. In previous years the river used to freeze over in the winter. But that hasn't happened for the last few years.

http://www.amprosoft.com/Journal/PJ-Dunlop.jpg
This sprawling industrial fascility is where I work. We cook rubber and mold it into tires and then I throw them into big trucks.

http://www.amprosoft.com/Journal/PJ-Shack.jpg
Before I started throwing tires I used to work as a security guard in a little tiny shack (pictured here). A very nice little 8 by 8 cell where I would do 8 hours of time at a time for 8 dollars an hour.

An okay job for a while, but I'm glad not to be doing that any more.

No photographs allowed beyond the security checkpoint. Wouldn't want to give the terrorists any vital information for when they stage an attack on key industrial sites in Tonowanda, NY.

i don't have a digital camera :(

tis a great thread tho claire. :)

a good while ago, my friend was at Glasgow uni and i visited her in her place in the west end a few times. my god it was cold! i had to sleep in tights. was fab too tho.

gea: i love this. good stuff.
the first picture outside your house just reminds me of that film beautiful girls with natalie portman, but that's probably only cos they have yards and it's, er.. snowy. and sort of industrial. probably a different part of the country altogether. i love seeing the different types of houses.
your high school looks a bit like my kelvingrove museum!
it is a crying shame that those kids have to play on something resembling that "play area". holy crap. i will never say a bad word against all these parks and greenery we have here that the kids are taken out to on sunny days. dear lord. what a waste!
i love the picture of the frozen river. even if it could be.. more frozen.
fantastic! it totally gives me much more of a mental image of your daily routine and what sort of environment you live in. it's funny, i had always pictured you in the middle of a desert somewhere.

freebasser: niiiiiice. :)

venus: you were in the west end?! cool! i wonder which bars you frequented.. ahh and to think, you probably passed me by on numerous occasions unknowingly! did you ride on our legendary clockwork orange? hehe. sleeping in tights; ha! that's fecking hardcore and glasgow fo' sho. me, i spend most of my time covered in a blanket. it's these epic ceilings in these tenements of ours, goddamnit.

Directors cut: It took me two days to get those shots. The picture of the factory that I took on the first day didn't turn out. That's why the sky is much more blue in the last two photos.

That little box I used to work in is actually divided down the middle so it's even smaller than it looks from the outside because half of it was the boss' office.

this is my journey to work. there are three different ways that i could go. one is off the road pretty much all the way. but it takes too long so i dont go that way too often. another is on the road the whole way, but it is disgusting, so i dont go that way unless i am bored of the other ways. the third way is part road, part off-road, and it's the way i usually go. mainly because it is the quickest and i am usually running late.

anyhoo...here goes...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/thegoodmrbrodie/eh/frontdoor.jpg

this is the view from my front door. fascinating. i live on a fairly busy road. i dont mind.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/thegoodmrbrodie/eh/backalley.jpg

this is the alley that runs behind my house. you could probably get murdered down there. but most of the locals use it for riding minature motorcycles and injecting themselves.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/thegoodmrbrodie/eh/desertedpub.jpg

this is a deserted pub i walk past every day. lovely. there is an elephant shaped climbing frame at the back, but i couldnt get a good photo of it.

the forbury gardens. quite lovely, until you are being brutally raped by members of our armed forces. but that doesnt happen anymore.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/thegoodmrbrodie/eh/energis.jpg

the cable & wireless building. the railway line runs behind it and when you see it means you are home, so its not as ugly to me. in fact i love it with all my heart.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v89/thegoodmrbrodie/eh/gaol.jpg

reading jail. a bad photo, but that was pretty much the only angle i could get without the sun being in my eyes. people in reading like to mention that oscar wilde was put in reading jail for being a bummer. kinda sums reading up. it's pronounced redding by the way. or reddin. to be more accurate.

Mine's not as good as Brodie's, but I tried.

View from the front door of my building, that's my car off to the left:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/crie05/home.jpg

This never fails to crack me up:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/crie05/signs.jpg

The highway I drive on to work is kinda nice:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/crie05/hwy99.jpg

Trying to get a decent picture of downtown and failing:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/crie05/downtown.jpg

I tried to get a picture of Mt. Ranier in the distance but it didn't come out so good. Its behind all of those buildings:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/crie05/mountain.jpg

Turning right off the highway, this also cracks me up almost daily:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/crie05/scientology.jpg

Turning left to go under the highway:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/crie05/spaceneedle.jpg

The daily search for parking, ooh, is that a spot?!?! :

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/crie05/parking.jpg

And finally

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b378/crie05/desk.jpg

I guess my daily journey doesn't highlight the coolest parts of Seattle. I tried to get a picture of the water as I was driving over the ship canal, but its a part of the highway with no median and I almost wiped out. Hard.

Anyway, there is my contribution.

the man from the pru! i am so glad you did this! i love it. my favourite one is the one of the car park; what a fucking waste of concrete! jesus, what were they thinking? lovely yellow bridge, too. was it constructed in the 80s perchance? gotta love us brits.

hp; yours rocks too! seattle eh? that's like a proper, grown-up city! and you took those while driving? that's talent fo' sho. the purpose of this thread isn't to show the "prettiest"/most relevant parts of your town/city because most people aren't blessed to be able to travel through them, but what i find so fascinating about this is that you get to see, whatever you may label them as the "real" parts of people's hometowns in all their glory - however unsexy they may be sometimes! i think it's great. seattle looks cool. and you have a remarkably clean desk. :)

You must pass Clouston Street every day - my home for several of those years (best flat was the top floor above Tinderbox!!)
My wife likes the Graf pic - she used to write with Rogue

Was up for Hogmanay but didn't go West. Good to see the Kibble Palace (AKA the UFO in the Botanics) is getting there. My life is very different now, I miss it. The pic below shows where I live now (you can just make out the red circle in the middle round my house) - not many record shops as you can imagine:(

Hubby and I are in the boathouse in Central Park checking out the bird book. I asked and he hasn't contributed to the book. "I see the same ten birds every day."

The facade has recently been unveiled after the first cleaning in the museum's history. It's a bit brighter than you may remember if you've been there. They also redesigned the banners while they were at it and the new ones let more light into the Great Hall.

Oh, and the piles of bricks atop the columns. Hubby told me about this one day, they ran out of money when they built that part of the museum and had apparently saved that for last. Now that the building is protected as a landmark they're not allowed to change it. (Though hubby and I agreed that the Met could probably twist some arms if they really wanted to carve them.)

Vélez Blanco Patio

I don't remember who the lad with the violin is. I'm usually rushing through here but I did stop to look at his card one day. There used to be a sculpture of Adam there but it shattered one day when the base broke. I remember when that happened, a few years ago (before my time) - yikes. He's under restoration now.

Sometimes there are events in this room and when I go to leave the library the glass doors are blocked by panels. It's kind of a claustrophobic feeling and I'm not usually claustrophobic (that would be hard in the city now that I think about it). When that happens (not often) I exit into the Greek & Roman galleries.

Anyway, continuing on...

This bad boy was waiting for me. This book is full of amazing engraved prints of these insanely elaborate Baroque architectural spaces designed by Giuseppe Galli Bibiena. I am definitely buying the cheap reprint that Dover made but the prints in the ten dollar edition will probably hurt my eyes after oogling these amazing (I think) 18th C. engravings. I feel incredibly lucky.. :)

That's nerdy? Not that I'm not a nerd but I didn't think working in a museum made you one.. :o

Anyway, I'm learning and practicing book conservation there. For instance, for the book in the last photo (which is from the museum's drawings & prints collection), I was cleaning the pages with eraser crumbs and a sponge (alternately). Judging by the amount of dirt on the corners of the pages, it's a popular book.

I do love it but it's only one day/week and also volunteer. I'm sorta looking at it as a free education in book conservation. I'm mainly a bookbinder, not a conservator, however it's good to have those skills because people do come to me with their falling-apart family heirloom cookbooks and bibles, and more and more I'm prepared to deal with that. walk down here for 5 minutes to a junction of great western road / byres road and past oran mor - once a church now a pub. wooh. good priorities right thurr!

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/DailyJourny008.jpg

reach byre's road (after waiting for ages at the fucking junction) and here's some, uhm, building work.

glasgow underground isn't very intricate. it's basically two big circles; one in each direction. big woop. it was built 1869 and is the world's third oldest subway system (behind london and budapest).

see, i wasn't lying:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/DailyJourny013.jpg

it is affectionally called the clockwork orange. i wonder why?

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/DailyJourny014.jpg

10 minutes on the tube and i get off in the city centre, buchanan street. oh, sweet light!

turn left onto george street and this is george square! and the city chambers (where the council is) on the left. this is where i come to eat lunch when, um, it's not raining. and the new year's celebrations are here. but it looks like such shit cos of the weather:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/DailyJourny019.jpg

keep on walking.. the city chambers up close. i used to work in there!

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/DailyJourny020.jpg

keep keepin' on (the building is quite large!) an arch in the city chambers. curious fact: the building has been used in muchos movies, and quite often as the vatican (!!!). this very arch was used in the ewan mcgregor movie young adam, if anyone has seen it. just as he's going in/out of court:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/DailyJourny021.jpg

then i turn left into my work and possible the most ugly university campus in the world (not my uni, haha!) this is from my office door:

No, this guy got on at 74 and Roosevelt. He was a black guy and I'm sure he wasn't homeless because he was wearing brand new clothes. He wasn't begging or anything. Just having a conversation with himself and singing. I'm pretty sure that everyone on the train was non-existant to him.

Now I gotta check out this Charles Manson guy you're talking about.

I went out to visit the cadillac ranch. It consists of 10 cadillacs buried nose first. It is located just off I-40 outside of Amarillo in the middle of the high plains. A local eccentric decided to do it years ago and leaves spray paint cans near the buried cars. I decided to paint my new sons name on the side of a car.

Yeti, I can dig it. Cool pics. Cool artwork. Thanks for sharing.
