my brother lives there, and i went there last yesterday just for the night to party.
that was accomplished easily.
after the party, we went to get poutine at 330am and that is where i encountered my first straight up racist/hate encounter in my life.
we were drunk and a little loud, speaking english. After we order this one guy a couple booths away starts staring at me incessantly. i subtly alert my brother who casually checks it out.
the mother fucker starts talking shit to his 3 buddies in french. well, bla bla bla, my brother tells him to take a picture and to 'va te faire chier'
which equals 'eat shit and die'
lots of heated words, it pretty much was the fact that we were speaking english and some residents in that neighborhood don't take fancy to that kind of behaviour.
I am French Canadian. i have Irish heritage as well. i'm not 'pure lain' or pure blood.
it has shook me to the core of my beliefs. the waitress eventually came to hurry those idiots out, but my brother couldn't stand it and left 10 minutes earlier.
she explained to me that she gets shit all the time for speaking english, even if it isn't perfect, just to be accomadating.
i don't know. i used to celebrate 'st jean baptiste' (quebec national holiday) and i still do say i'm a french nationalist. but such unfounded animosity...
love, people. it's the only thing that can overcome ignorance and hate. and maybe patience.
i just needed to vent. i don't expect replies. :)
