According to the man himself his album should be done in March..can't wait.
He's got a new song floating about called "3 Freaks" with some Bay-area MC's, its great stuff. Listen to it on his site... djshadow.com (http://www.djshadow.com/) . Well i say new, its a couple of months old to be honest, but its new-ish.
what do ye think? oh you can also download it from his myspace page...Dj Shadow's My Space (http://www.myspace.com/djshadow)

Does anyone know if the new album will contain ambient trip-hop like his other 2 albums?

from reading his various digest entries on his website over the last year, it seems as though his new album will probably sound quite different than what he has put out before. He has admitted he has no desire to repeat himself again and again, and has more or less stated that he is making this album for himself, and is well aware he could lose some fans over it.
If you look at the journey from Endtroducing to The Private Press it's clear he always wants to do something that challenges himself and his fans, and he's clearly going to be doing that this time.
From what's been announced etc.. they will be a couple of collabs on this record, notably David Banner.
I for one am glad he's making a record for himself and no one else. The worst thing that can happen an artist is when they make albums that the fans want/expect. That breeds staleness. As amazing as Endroducing is, i don't want to hear it being ripped off by the man who made it.

see i've always been uncomfortable with that trip hop tag with shadow, it's just hip hop but instrumental, sampling is hip hop, shadow is hip hop, at least to me anyways

I'm fine with him doing collabos, I mean, Funky Skunk has decent and it was just a mixtape.
But when Shadow works with an MC it should be GREAT not eh, like that track is.

I'm no hip-hop music expert, but as someone who really likes Endtroducing.... to me anyway "3 Freaks" sounds almost like someone randomly trying out different samples/effects/beats on his new synthesizer he just bought. :(
I liked the track that followed though, the one called "Nursery Rhyme Breather" (I've never heard it before).

*shrugs*
Heard it a while back and I didnt really like it, how every since then I've gave it a couple more chances and its growing on me. Yeah, his new album seems likes its going to be very different. I guess it'll be good thing as most artists start to sound repetative after a while. Q-tip's also going to be on it, which should be good (y)
Theres a short video of him here (http://joost.ranzies.com/d2s.avi) talking about his album on the tv show called "Distortion 2 Static". Its hosted by the solesides (http://www.solesides.com/) site.

lose fans over it?
if his album sounds like that track, he'll have people denying his existance.
that was shit.
those MC's are wretched...that beat was sad.
it wasn't "new and expiremental" is was just cluttered and noisy.

i don't think that track is supposed to be any indication of what his album is going to sound like. he said that it was made to be a Bay-area style track with Bay area mc's....

"Such is the case with his new song "You Made It," which started with a sample and ended up becoming a live piece. "I like the sample because it’s just a very different type of rhythm and type of sound than most people would associate with me," he says. "But I was trying to figure out what to do next, so rather than do the traditional thing, which is to plow through records, I wanted to create something rather quickly and ride the vibe that I was getting off the sample itself." So Shadow recorded a bass-synth line and a string arrangement, added a drum sample and then hired a London orchestra to replay the string arrangements and a live drummer to replay the drums. 'There’s a combination of synthesizers, samples, live instrumentation, vocals,' Shadow says. 'The few people who I’ve played it for are like, 'Wow … it sounds so real.' It sounds stupid to say, but it's fun for me to come from such a humble start to … the kind of production I couldn't have thought about doing even, like, two years ago.'"
I think the new album is actually going to be really good, and if not that, certainly interesting. Because he's being more creative with the way he puts the songs together, I think the album is going to put Shadow's skills as a composer, songwriter, and arranger under a magnifying glass. Live orchestration + sample-based = cool. I'm certainly not going to judge what sounds like an otherwise cool album on this song.

hahaha, I think this album is going to be really unpopular. I don't care, I'm extremely happy for Shadow to keep challenging and reinventing himself, even if he's not popular at the time, history will look upon him much more favourably for it. I am pumped for the new album, I'm open to a lot of musical styles and I love shadow's creative approach to how he makes music. I don't care if it's different, better that than him stagnating for years and years. Why try and improve on something that was so damn near to perfection (Endtroducing) anyway.
So yep, bring on the new album. If I like it, I like it, if I don't, I don't. But I'll always respect him.
Also I read the description of that strings track a while back. The description sounds great.

I really enjoyed the track. Something about that site takes me back to the excitement of this board, pre-TT5B. A notable similarity being an early track being rated as shithouse by most of the fan community.
