Wahoo! I just found out I got promoted
No more hour long drive to work, hello 10 minute bike ride!
And I won't be stuck in an office any more either.
This week just keeps getting better...
(now watch it all fall apart in front of me)

It is cool to be able to get to/from work quickly like that.
And a promotion to boot. Congratulations! (y)
It's so great when people share positive stuff like this in this forum. I love that.

Sorry, I should have posted a bit more detail.
I currently work in Intelligence for HM Revenue & Customs (formerly Customs & Excise). From April I'll be a manager in Detection at one of the major ports, covering passenger, freight and anti-terrorist duties. It's front line work, and I'll be running my own team; I'm really looking forward to it as this is the job I got into Customs for in the first place.
And being so close to work is just a huge bonus, no more traffic problems, hour long drives, having to pay £95 a month just to park near the office....
My shift will only be 8 hours instead of the 10/11 hours I currently do, and the chances are for some night shifts I'll just be on call, rather than having to be there even when there's nothing to do.

how come your shifts are so long now?
it seems unusual that the desk jobber works longer hours than the field guy
sounds like a cool jjob though (y)

Not too sure, when our department was set up a few years ago they were finding it hard to come up with a suitable rota, so they stole the one that the Channel Tunnel staff use, which is 10 hour day/late shifts and 11 hour nights.
It's not so bad, as at the moment I get a lot of days off. In a way it's nicer to work a 63 hour week and then get four days off, rather than just a two day weekend.

I live a couple of miles from where I work. In nicer weather, I'll walk further and use the trails to get to the back end of my work building. Takes longer to do that, but it winds me through woods, close to a pond, under and over a stone bridge--all with a nice backdrop of trees and live things that don't panhandle.
Nice to blend the commute with exercise.

That's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking forward to (once the weather improves a little).

No more hour long drive to work
That's good since you're not allowed to drive.

No, I'm driving again now. I wasn't allowed to drive for a week after the operation, but it's all fine now.

It's usually good to be the boss.

Working a job where you can work fewer hours definitely rules.
Except in my case, where I can chose to work more hours and I'm so broke that I generally have to do so. S'nice to have a job where you feel you're getting a fair wage though.
