Well, it was actually given to me for my birthday, but either way...

I'm looking for one of those sleeve gases that will protect botht he ipod itself, and the screen. Most thta I see have a cut out for the screen and the dial.

Any help would be (y)

One of my buddies just got a new iPod video and he's got this awesome looking protective case on it that looks like it's part of the damn iPod. If I had an iPod, you know I'd be sporting the same damn thing... 'cause not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but he was showing me how it protects it and stuff, so I was sold and I don't even have one.

Go scope out iSkin (http://www.iskin.com/) and I think it's either the eVo2 or maybe the eVo3, but that last one is supposedly new... so maybe it's better. I dunno. But that's what I'd get for my non-existant iPod.

Over dinner the other night, friends of friends were trying to convince me to get an iPod so that I could listen to podcasts.

I admit that I didn't quite know what podcasts were--before that dinner, I assumed that they were broadcasts (for ipods) of concerts and music-related stuff. I didn't know that they are what they are; now I'm intrigued.

I read an article that led me to believe that podcasts can be picked up with MP3 players. Is that right? If so, can you access all podcasts with an MP3 player? (In other words, is the hardware irrelevant?)

I was under the impression that podcasts were simply mp3's that contain radio'ish content, not a platform specific thing.

That's cool! (y)

I have an MP3 player and it probably has another 6-8 months of life left in it.

Yeah, podcasts are pretty much radio bradcasts or similar that you can d/l to a MP3 player for later listening.

Extra Cheese, that one protects the screen as well?

yes it does.

it has a circle opening at the click wheel and then it also openenings at the top and bottom for the headphones and dock connector. its a hard case so if it falls it shouldnt do too much damage.

I like that one. I have yet to take the leap into the age of technology (aside from using a computer). I still walk down the street fucking around with a disc player and a shitload of CD's stuffed in all my pockets. I have been thinking about an iPod but it seems to me that as soon as you get home with the 'newest and most advanced' model, a commercial comes on the tube that makes the incredibly expensive hunk of metal in your hand look like a piece of archaic shit.

I dunno.........can't win for losing, I guess.

I got a cheapie silicon one off ebay and it doesn't do shit so beware of those. I wanted the thick silicon skin but I guess that wasn't what I was ordering. It did come with the screen protector though which is good cause it got a chip in the screen in like the first few days!

Those ones SS posted look cool I think I'll get one...

I agree with you there, but as long as it works, I don't think I'll need to ever upgrade it. It's the 20 gig, which is supposedly around 10,000 songs, which is about 7500 more than my current CD collection.

The only thing that sucks with mine is that I got a mac mini for Xmas as well as the ipod - the mac mini is only 40 G and the ipod itself is 30 G. So I've almost used all the memory on my computer with songs and movies now

Damn, 40 gig. I don't think I've ever heard enough songs to fill a 40 gig ipod.

I pretty much only listen to 10 bands, but listen to every album they put out.

I must have about 70 odd gig of mp3's but that doesn't mean I listen to every single track regularly. I catch myself mostly listening to the same albums and tracks.

I got the 60gb video ipod. I cant say one bad thing about it the actual item. Its unfortunate battery life couldnt be longer. But I just bought an iTrip so i can listen to it on my cd player in my car, so i dont gotta be burning 1000x cds for the road. Alot of expensive accesories for the ipod. Today some bitch was trying to sell me an 80 dollar case, shit was made out of seal skin.

Nothing but profit in the cottage industry that has sprung up over iPods. All those accessories make for a great way to cash in on this craze.

Heres an article (http://www.tgdaily.com/2005/09/22/material_cost_of_ipod_nano_estimated_around_/index.html) about the net cost (http://engadget.com/2005/09/23/your-200-ipod-nano-costs-about-90-to-make/).

I read a similiar story a year ago about intel and theit pentium 4 chip which was then selling for $350-$400, they cost $40 dollars to manufacture. More power to them, I think if a person can create a demand and get folks to go for it, cool.

Personal MP3 players are great IMO, probably one of the cooler things to come along in years for music lovers.

Don't forget that retail price includes man hours, research and development, the price of the factory the ipods are produced in and more things like that.

edit: Duh, I should have read the article to begin with

The bill of materials does not include manufacturing, shipping and promotional expenses such as marketing and PR. iSuppli did not comment on these factors, but companies typically spend not more than 15-20 percent on these categories, which would put the 2 GByte iPod nano's total cost at well below $120 and the profit margin of the device - which sells for $199 - at more than 40 percent.I think that the 40% margin is exagerated if you include a few of the other factors.

I have not read much of this thread but wish to point out that a products price has nothing to do with production cost. Firms charge the price the generates the greatest profit, if this is a lot more than manufacturing cost then good for them they have found away to either add value(achieve competitive advantage) or are expoloiting some kind of market failure.

I have a PSP which is much better than an ipod. Im pretty fuckin great.
