i'm getting a portion of my grill pulled on friday morning. i'm scurred. i've never been under any anasthesia or anything so i'm nervous i'll be one of those crazy statistics that never wakes up or it won't work completely and i'll wake up halfway through and the dentist will jab the roof of my mouth on accident like my brother's best friend or i'll swell up like mariah carey for days and days and i'll miss a week of work and school and i'll never get a good career and be forced to tap dance on the corner with my pants off for change like freebasser :(

tell me it won't be that bad and i've got nothing to worry about :\

Nothing to worry about, except maybe a bruise on your chest if the teeth are stubborn.

Change your pillow and case to something you don't mind bleeding on. Get some DVDs. Be prepared to sleep a lot. (y)

eeek.

mine never gave me too much hassle, but i do have one which is completely perpendicular to the rest of my teeth, it literally points sideways out of my mouth, but its inside the gum. it may never bother me, but the dentist left me with this ominous warning.."if it ever decides to move, you'll know about it"

:(

oh and it won't be that bad and i've got nothing to worry about

i'm kind of a baby when it comes to pain in my teeth/mouth. braces were hell for me.

it's weird. the dentist said "that's odd" when he saw my x-rays. not a good thing to hear, huh? he said that they had all developed at different rates, and that one of them (the one that's really causing me trouble) is completely impacted and grinding and rotting away at the molar next to it. it's been hurting for a loong time. and two others haven't budded yet but they have bigass cysts around them (ewwww). and the last has popped out a little but it's not fully developed...but this is the really weird part. it's almost full-grown, but it didn't grow any roots. that's unusual, he said. and he also said it's very unusual for them to grow at such different rates. hell, the worst one budded about three years ago.

kll was very helpful in scaring the hell out of me so that i'd build it up to be something huge and it'd be nothing. thanks, whore.

i took a few days off work...i just hope i don't look ridiculous come monday. i'm stocking up on pudding and yogurt.

and thanks, a-z. any other tips would be welcome.

It ain't no thang. The only bad part was not being able to eat real food for a couple of days. The drool and blood were annoying but aren't really a problem after a few hours.

I had it done a few years ago. They told me to count backwards from 10 and I remember getting to 6 and then waking up in the recovery room with my sister laughing at me as I was trying to speak. Sure a little blood and drool came out, but thats just par for the course.

It'll be ok.

Don't forget to call your doctor the next day and say the pain killers aren't working so he will prescribe more for you. In my experience, it can be done a total of 3 times.

my bottom wisdom teeth actually grew 6 ROOTS, as opposed to the normal 4.
yes, i had mutant widsom teeth.

that was the problem. my dentist simply could not remove them by normal means (tons of novacane, and pliers)...he even removed pieces of my jaw with a little buzz-saw...still no go.
i had be rushed to ER for surgery....boy, that sucked.

i couldn't eat for days...swallowed so much blood that i just kept puking.
i passed out in the bathroom from dehydration/starvation....

Remember a while back on a current affair or some show like that when they had that lady that was undergoing surgery and the anesthesiologist (spelling?!?!) basically just paralyzed her. She could hear and feel everything but couldn't move or speak or do anything to let them know. She made bank off of that one.

But seriously....that was probably like a 1 in a gazillion kind of thing.

Well I got 4 scripts with 30 pills each. I just kept calling saying it wasn't working and I was in a lot of pain. So they kept giving me more. I spread it out over time though. I'd triple up some days, and skip another...so forth and so on.
When I went for my check up a few weeks after the surgery, as I was walking out, the surgeon said...."if you got anymore problems and are in pain, give us a call and we will get you some more narcotics". and then winked. It was cool. Then again this was all pre rush limbaugh fucking up pain killer prescriptions all over the states. But still...I'm sure it can be done.

I feel semi bad because i keep pushing my woman to getting hers pulled now so i can try and do the same thing again. And for health too of course...but you know......

yet he STILL couldn't get to the main nerve under the tooth...hence my hell.

if you only could have seen his face when he realized he just couldn't finish the procedure himself....the look of defeat on his face was so terrorizing.

I had all four of mine done at once and it really wasnt that bad. I was swollen but not brused, it really all depends on you. If you bruise easy I would reccommend starting to take about 1000mg of Vitamin C...it helps with brusing. (but you probably already knew that)

Watch out for dry sockets. PAINFUL.

I had one surgigally removed cause it had a crooked root, the other ones are still there (I think). I only had local anestisia and it'd didn't take that long. I had to eat some medicine for a week and I had to eat pureed or liquid food for as long time as well. Of course at the time I just met my new boyfriend and we had our first real date the next day and I couldn't drink alcohol and then he teased me cause I bought babyfood and later teased me even more by buying me a cinnamon bun, which, he'd found out, that I love.

i think they were just sitting in there doing nothing and mom was like...well lets get it done. i think it had something to do with socialized medicine stoping dental coverage of kids older than a certain age so she was a nurse and wedged me in to get all yanked.

It was no thing...but mine had no roots so.

03-07-2006, 04:46 PM
I guess I had a normal experience. Mine were sort of fucked up but not extremely so or anything. They were all impacted. I actually did wake up while he was breaking one tooth, but I was so messed up I didn't feel anything and then fell back asleep. I was pretty sore and the recovery was more painful than I expected. Nothing acute, just bad achyness. I didn't really like having to clean the sockets. They give you this syringe you're supposed to squirt water into the emtpy holes. You get food stuck in there and stuff.

I did enjoy the meds. But mostly they just put me to sleep.

My boyfriend at the time took care of me. That was really sweet. He took some days off of work and it was nice to have him home with me.

Second only to watching a dog eat peanut butter, one of the funniest things to watch is someone smoke a cigarette while all shot up on novacaine.

I remember walking down Michigan Avenue a couple years ago having just received a shiney new root canal. I decided that after all that stress I needed a smoke. What a fucking mess that turned out to be. Spit and drool everywhere. People staring. I'm swearing outloud (but to myself) but with my mouth a numbed up it sounded like "mrrrfigggn peec a sit sunna bith!"

I think some people genuinley felt bad for me seeing as how I looked like I wasn't in complete control of my faculties.

my teef aren't that great either... my adult eye teeth just never grew in, so when i lost my babies, it left me with 2 big gaps. My braces haven't been to bad for me, they just suck when you get em adjusted for a few days.
So, to solve my little problem, the ortho said he's gonna have to screw fake teeth in, when im i think around 18... anything that has anything to do with screws and gums, dont make me feel comfy.

i got braces the summer before my senior year. my wisdom teeth hadn't come in yet, and they were worried that they might mess my teeth up if they came in post-braces, so they decided to pull all 4 of them. they were all still under my gums, but fully formed, so my dentist sent me to an oral surgeon. this man must've been very worried that i was going to feel something, because he shot me up with novacaine gave me a ton of gas. i know that i was telling him a story about some band... and the next thing i remember was my mom holding me under one arm and a nurse holding me under the other arm and my sister laughing hysterically over the fact that i couldn't walk. at all. my feet were just dragging and they were pretty much carrying me to the car. i went out of it again and then remember being put to bed. my face didn't get all swollen like a lot of people's because as soon as i got home, my mom made an ice pack for me to hold on my face. if you do it before the cheeks have a chance to puff, you should be alright in that dept.

oh, and the pain thing... if you were to hold an ice cube on your cheek for a long time, ir hurts before it gets numb. and that is probably a little worse pain than the mouth pain. um. you're going to have a bunch of rolled up gauze in your mouth to sizzoak blood, but unless you're sucking on a straw or something to put weird pressure on parts of your mouth, you shouldn't bleed too much after a while. you're tough. you'll be fine. but you should still pretend you're not to get steger to do anything you want.

[oh. and just because everyone else shared some freak tooth story, i'll add my little one: i guess one of my wisdom teeth was a "twin tooth".. meaning it was just what it sounds like. 2 wisdom teeth that just formed together to make one giant, painful, mega wisdom tooth. gross.

I had mine out. They were impacted. I was all the way under. I had no issues at all. I flushed out the holes afterwards like they told me so food wouldn't collect there. The syringe thing they gave me was kind of cool. I didn't take the pain meds (pain meds make me throw up). Whenever you have anything done, all kinds of fools will tell you about their neighbor who had the same procedure and died.

But I always figure that it's a good sign when it's so routine that they gloss over the details and they just shove you through their mill. Good luck.

When I had my gallbladder out, I wouldn't sign the standard consent to let students observe. The doctor said it wasn't interesting enough for anyone to watch. (I never agree to any of the add-ons the doctors give you on the forms.)
