Some advice for all the cellphone-users out there:

To check the serial-number of your cellphone type
*#06# and write the displayed number down.

If your cellphone is stolen call the phone-producer
(e.g. Motorola) and tell them this number. They can
lock the cellphone down completely. So, after that no
thief can use it anymore, even if he/she changes the
SIM-card. And then you can call him "SUCKER"

It won't bring your cellphone back, but at least no
one else can use it. And if everybody shares this
information, it won't be worth steeling cellphones
anymore… For a better future ;)

I just gave up my cell phone service a couple months ago.

Still, if this is the real deal, that's valuable info.

The phone manufacturer can't block the phone, the cell phone company can.

That code brings out the IMEI code, a unique code that's basically it's serial number (you can find it written on the label under the battery for some models).

Police in amsterdam were trying to reduce the amount of stolen cell phones by sending "sms bombs" to the phone in question through the IMEI code. I think it worked.

I still have mine anyway.

If you lose your cell phone, you are responsible for all charges made on that phone until you report that it was lost/stolen.

That was the case in October with my calling plan. I was told that those were the terms that all of the major carriers used.
