View Full Version : since my wife left me, I've decided to become a video game nerd

I'm pretty pumped about it actually. Last week a friend of a friend of mine was talking about how he just got Gun, and I was like, "you play video games?" and he was like, "hell yeah" and I was like, "hmm". so then at a party last friday I said, "hey, umm, I want to come over to your house and play video games." and he said, "you do?!" and I said, "yes!" and he said, "omg, we can do 4 player Bond with M and C2" and my eyes got wide and I shouted "omg! I used to play Goldeneye all the time in college!" and we were both smiling like a couple of ultra-nerds and shouting about games and punching. then he said, "shit, let me get your phone number" and then he shouted to M, "hey! K is going to come over and do 4 player Bond with us some time!" and M said, "awesome!"
so, yeah, I'm excited. I'm totally going to fall in love with video games.

EEEeeee game nerds are rockin
okay bob, here's a question, how can I be awesome at video games?
you don't become awesome at video games...you just BE awesome...
oh wait, you said "be awesome". i dunno. practice? or just flash your boobs at strategic moments to distract the other guys, that usually works.
not that i flash my boobs...i just meant that when girls flash their boobs at me, i get distracted
that is to say, i would get distracted if i knew any girls who played video games and also liked to show me their boobs (either while playing video games or not playing video games), but i don't. but that's the price you pay to be as excellent a nerd as i am, the rewards are obvious.

...or playing games at the same time with other hardcore power-nerds
I try to moderate the stimuli input into the cerebral cortex...a few guilty pleasures like sports fantasy pools, forum-ing, and gaming.
Besides, it's really good for the hand/eye co-ordination. In-game graphics are approaching photo-realistic quality pretty quickly making for quite immersive experiences.
The world will go Lawnmower Man one day, I can feel it..

What games do you play on the Ps2? I've been rocking the 15th anniversary SF2 collection. It's too good for a game so old. Remember on the Genesis, Streetfighter had all that garbled sound? Not an issue nowadays.
What do you think was better, Genesis, or SNES?

I had both and I think they were great as well. The SNES had more heavy games graphically speaking as Donkey kong for example. But Genesis (we call Mega Drive here) had some fucking cool games as Sonic and Phantasy Star. I really dont know whats best or if theres one beter than the other. I like them equally.

I was talking the talk. We called it megadrive in NZ as well.
I miss my megadrive, it was the old one with the cross-fader type volume switch for the headphones. Not one of the Megadrive 2 things.
Remember the 32x? Fuck did Doom suck shit on that thing. It was only able to texture the walls, so you had bland as shit ceilings and floors.
I think the SNES had the edge in that it could also process cumtomized cartridges, like Killer Instinct and whatever the Rare Donkey Kong one was called, they both had a graphics chip in the cartridge which covered most of those complex processes. I loved the SNES, but never owned one.
Aside from SFII, arguably the best games on Megadrive/ Genesis were Madden 93, Gunstar Heroes and Shining Force 1 and 2. My favourites anyway. Does anybody remember Peter Phoenix?

Video games are the ultimate manifestation of man's control over his own destiny. It is a fusion of skill and beauty. It is art through action. To become good at video games is to become shogun. It requires focus, commitment and passion.

hahahaha.....mine had that same switch for the headphones volume. Good memories about my Mega Drive. And that 32x was a fucked up try to enhance the Mega Drive. Sega CD rules 1 billion times over 32x.
And yeah.....Donkey Kong and Killer Instinct had a graphic chip in the cartridge. I had forgotten about that.

The Mega CD and 32X were not mutually exclusive. There were several CD games that required the 32X to work. And Eternal Champions was l33t on CD. Loads of gory cutscenes and hidden characters. The cartridge version stunk though.
As for 32x, Virtua Racing Deluxe was vastly superior to the regular MD version, and of course Virtua Fighter was one of, if not the, first polygonated fighter to make it to a home console.
As for the "Super FX" chips that were in games such as Starwing (Starfox) etc, I didn't rate them. The games were generally pretty mediocre.

I am playing Knights of The Old Republic 2. It is excellent, if you like RPGs. It isn't very different from KOTOR1. Which itself was just NWN with starwars. Great game, but you can pirate it easily for free.
Jedi Academy is good if you like first person shooters, but it is old. Single player is good.
Battlefront 2 is good if you like team based online multiplayer first-person shooters. Prolly your best bet (if you are getting the PC version of it, that is) if you want lastability.

My son's a huge Tony Hawk game fan. He's so obsessed he wants me to buy Tony Hawk clothes for him. Geesh.
He's playing PS2 right now, the wacky kid.
Maybe he'll make millions as a pro-gamer when he grows up, and I'll get the condo with plastic pink flamingos like I've always wanted.
knights of the old republic is a really incredible game. I haven't played the second one, i've heard it's disappointing (though i don't know why exactly). if you haven't played the first one, though, definitely go out and play that, it's wonderful (once you get past the first planet, which is still fun, though not half as fun as the rest of the game).
imagine baldur's gate 2, only star wars, only better. in my opinion.

I haven't played the second one
The second one is cool, it is very very similar to the first one. There is a fair bit of overlap, with the second one referencing the first one a LOT, the plots are heavily linked. In some ways, I prefer the second one (you don't waste half the game on a non-jedi class, it is more sophisticated) - as it is a tiny bit more sophisticated in terms of game options, upgrades, more Jedi / Sith classes, etc. The first one's story was sharper though, the second one still has mystery and an engrossing plot, but because it references kotor1 a lot, it reminds you of how much you identified with those characters.
It's "more of the same" - which is good, as KOTOR1 was excellent, but after playing through KOTOR on Difficult, I had a fair idea what to expect, and I waltzed through KOTOR2 without too much hassle.
