View Full Version : growing a beard

i'm going to take another shot at growing facial hair, i think it might look better this time than it did last time. my strategy last time was "don't shave for about a year and see what happens" and, well, the results were embarrassing. this time, the strategy is "shave in such a way that i don't have a neckbeard", which i think is going to work much better.

my question is this though; where does a beard end, and a neckbeard begin? obviously, any hair on the neck is to be shaved, that's a no-brainer. but what about the area under the chin? currently, i've got it shaved more or less right up to the bottom of my jaw, but i dunno, it looks a little silly when i tilt my head up and look at it. however, most people, bearded or otherwise, don't often walk around like that, so that angle is rarely ever seen, so i'm not sure if it's supposed to look silly or not. am i supposed to do it that way, or is there supposed to be a moderate level of hair under the chin, too?

i have no beard growing experience and none of my friends are any good at it, perhaps some of you will know enough about it to help me out.

you could sit up straight and tilt your head down. the line is where the crease is

it should be in a u/v shape above the adams apple and up to the botton of yer jaw line. my medicine cabinet has lights on it and the shadow lines it up right for me

may the force be with you

all ive gotta say is that a nice fuzzy chin is fantastic to rub.

i think it sucks when ur trying to grow a beard and it grows in patches around ur face, like one side of the face gets more hair than the other or like that one section under your chin gets more hair than on your cheeks... totally sucks(n)

but good luck on growing ur man hair!!...

i agree to shave the neck hair off... cuz if it starts growing too far, it'll connect with your chest hair... and then i'd be forced to rub ur belly and give u a dog biscuit... warewolf man!!

yeah, that's what it looked like last time. it seems to be growing in much faster this time though, so i'm hopeful. currently, it still looks a little...pubish and patchy, yeah, but it's only been a week. usually, every time i say "i think i'll grow a beard", this is where i give up because i look ridiculous, but i think that once i get past this patchy hump, i think it'll look ok. i hope. i won't know until i try, i guess.

actually, i'm going to shave again for sure, because i'm getting my picture taken for the yearbook on thursday (my parents want it, i don't, but they did pay for college, so you know) and i don't want to look ridiculous for it. i have to wear a suit and everything. but after the picture, the project will begin. if i had a digitial camera, i'd document the journey through photo. but i don't. sorry.

anyway thanks bionic, that's exactly what i needed to hear. i'm just going to assume that you're right

I hear you Bob.

Just today I went through my usual routine of:

1) Deciding that I have enough facial hair to style it
2) Realising I don't have enough coverage on my sides to go for a full beard
3) Attempting to style a goatee
4) Realising that nobody looks good with just a goatee
5) Shave everything but the soul chip off for a laugh
6) Shave it off before anybody sees
7) Give in, revert back to stubble
8) Repeat process in 8 weeks times

I think you should let your beard grow under your chin as well. That way it'll look more full. That's what I do at least.

just as long as its not crawling down your neck, its fine...

generally, the hair won't grow much below the area that you want it too, so its not really a problem

my suggestion is to wait on any sort of trimming for at least a week or two so that you know where everyhting is going before you chop anything down

Proper environment
Shaving involves sharp instruments being swung near vital organs, so it's imperative that you perform the deed under suitable conditions. Are you sure they are talking about beards...?

why the frown? You've got a fu manchu. It's a little more than a goatee which is alot more than what I can grow. I'd be happy if I can even grow that so, turn that frown upside down.

...you know what I used to do? Open wide like you're making Big Yawn and then shave along that line. I figured that out because I realized that I was trimming so close under the jaw that if I laughed, that part was hairless and would spoil the line of the beard.

NO IDEA if that made sense, but there you go.

Has anybody ever gone down on a girl and looked up and said: "How do I look with a beard?"?

I just looked up "proper beard" on google image search and tons of pictures of David Strathairn came up. In fact all the results except for one were pictures of him. he doesn't even have a beard. I must solve this mystery. well, no, I don't feel like it.
