View Full Version : How does your metabolism work for you?

Me, I seriously have to watch what I eat. I baloon out fast if not especially if I don't exercise.
I've gained 8 pounds during my vacation. Mainly because whenever I'd go out to eat, we'd order close to at least one plate of everything on the menu that looked good. Not that we finished everything off, we made a damn good attempt at doing so. I also drank beer on a daily basis which I try not to do but I love Chinese beer so It's an exception.
My coworker though eats hamburgers almost everynight. Snacks on chips and candybars and drinks sodas all night long and remains as thin as a rail. My job consists of sitting on our ass during 80 percent of the day. My coworker doesn't exercise at all working this kind of job and he's like 5'8" 148 lbs.
Dammit! I want to eat candybars and hamburgers everyday but just cant.

I eat the same as I always have done, but in the last two years it's suddenly all piled on and my metabolism has slowed waaaaaay down.
That's what not playing football every day for two years will do to you :/
my metabolism is very fast. i eat non-stop all day. i'm 186 cm, and 67 kg. i skate and snowboard, so that helps my metabolism a lot. my friends joke around and say i have a tape-worm, cause i'm hungry all the time.

Yeah, that's my main thing. I used to be very thin when I was young because I skateboarded and everywhere I went, I skated to get there.
while on vacation, I didn't exercise. Of course not and the pants that were once loose fitting could barely be buttoned when finished.
I'm mainly writing this thread cause my coworker's meal consisted of a double whopper combo meal, supersized. He then went to Hardees and got some big ass hamburger combo meal, again upsized. He finished a whole bag of guac Doritos and then munched a half bag of Dove chocolates.
He eats like this every damn night and I'm thinkin does he have a worm?

i gather that mine is pretty fast.
i don't really have to watch what i eat, but i suppose i don't eat that much anyway. but i'm never hungry or anything
when my friends said i may have worms, i got paranoid, and looked it up. it said that if you have 'em, the parts fall out of your anus. i have yet to see any worm bits around, so i know i don't have them.

I gain pretty quick, especially if I'm dormant and not working. Only thing good about my job is the trip to and from. A lot'o blocks, yeah. Plus; I'm constantly on my feet getting yelled at by elderly women who want booths.

i get fat too. but then i just eat nothing for a while and it evens itself out
speaking of metabolism, the burger from the fish & chip shop + whole bag of kettle chilli chips last night did not go down well today. was farting like every 3 minutes today. in all honesty i don't think i've ever farted so much in my life. i could've driven myself home on all the gas i produced today. real stinky gas too, which made pissing off my work mates real easy :D

Mine has slowed over recent years. I don't have to watch what I eat too much but if I don't work out at least a few times a week I lose muscle tone and gain fat a lot quicker than I used to.

I easily get dizzy, cranky and fatigued, even if I'm not hungry, so I have to eat frequently or at least have some sugar, like some juice. That may not have anything to do with metabolism. Lots of overweight people are hypoglycemic. I'm high maintenance; allergic to shellfish, mildly lactose intolerant, hypoglycemic. And I used to be so healthy! Once the shellfish/lactose double whammy hit in my teens, it was all downhill from there. I started gaining weight faster, I'd take caffeine pills before I went running, I'd take laxatives, I stopped eating enough, I overate, I started turning tricks for crack cocaine, I stole money from my grandma's purse to pay for my abortion...But my body hasn't changed much in the last 6 years.

Well, these days I'm eating right and getting some regular exercise so...

If I eat right and exercise, my metabolism's pretty good. I have to work pretty hard to get the bodyfat below nine percent, though.
mine is pretty divine, really. i eat horribly (and more often, lately, but i still haven't gained any weight), i rarely exercise (aside from walking to class and the occasional...very, very occasional weightlifting, which doesn't make you lose weight anyway as far as i know, i really don't exercise at all), and i still haven't gained weight. i'm 6'1" and 150 lbs and have been all throughout college. i don't get it. maybe i DO have a tapeworm. i always check for bits in the toilet, but so far, nothing.

mine's way too fast, and i'm unfortunately the kind of person who constantly has to be "reminded" to eat, or else i'd probably just eat once a day. sad but true.
edit; can someone give me 10-15 kgs / 22-33 lbs?

i'm similar to Bob, i guess.
i try and eat semi-decent (green vegetables, high quality meat, juice) but i eat too much greasy, high fat food.
yet i am virtually incapalbe of gaining wieght.
i'm like 6', 155 lbs.
i do work out regularly with free wieghts, but never cardio. i hate running.
i serioulsy wish i could gain weight, even if it was fat.
i have NO hips, i have NO ass. belts barely work on me, cause they have nothing to hold on to.
i would love to have some love-handles, or a little belly.
i wish i could fill my torso out at least...look a little bulkier....my body frame just looks too smallish.
i seriously have the body of a dude from that AEon Flux cartoon.
like nuzz, i also get really irritable when i get hungry. i can't concentrate on anything...i just bitch and moan.
it's like my body is a turbine...burning through fuel so fuckin fast...

Mine's slowly slowing down as I get older and I bet it will gradually come to a halt.

If my thyroid is normal, my metabolism is also.
I eat a few meals throughout the day. I exercise frequently. As I get older, I have to exercise longer and harder to keep status quo in terms of muscle and performance. If I cut back on exercise, I'll lose muscle quickly. I don't have a lot of fat to begin with, but I'm sure that if I stopped exercising altogether, I'd eventually stop losing weight for muscle and I'd start putting weight on for fat.

I want to beat my metabolism up. It's pretty slow I think. I wonder if it has to do with having low blood pressure? I've never been thin, but I never get too fat or puffy...maybe because I'm naturally muscular. Once my clothes start getting tight, I cut back on the amount of food I eat and try to excercise and that usually works. Nobody in my family is thin, but nobody's obese either. We're just a bunch of thick sturdy folk built for butter-churning on the farm.
I've lost about 15 pounds since thanksgiving and none of my pants fit. please buy me some new pants.

mine used to be real fast in high shcool when i ran every day. i would eat everything in site and still hover around the same weight.
since then though, ive gained about 25 pounds, but its been the same for almost a year now. so i don't really know what is going on...

if i'm not active, it's slow as hell and i pack on lbs fast. i'm a snacker, too, so i've been forcing myself to really watch my portions and calories. but i do my best to keep active throughout my everyday, and am getting a YMCA membership within the next few days. fuckin' finally. when i DO get a lot of exercise, the pounds melt off really quick. about a year and a half ago i started going to the gym more regularly, spending at least half an hour on the bike and then usually some laps in the pool or some treadmillin' and ab exercises. i dropped about ten pounds within a matter of weeks. and i felt great! but since moving in with someone and being more sedentary, i've gotten lazy :o and have put on the pounds i lost. so the last few weeks i've been changing my diet to accomodate for my goals.
it helps being vegan, obviously. when i gave up animal fats i lost about ten pounds right away, and i've kept that off. i don't feel huge but i just don't feel toned, and i don't like that weak feeling. so i'm upping my protein, lowering my carbs, and trying to do more stair-climbing at my school. seriously, the fucking stairs here are intense. it kicks my ass. at the start of the new semester everyone around here's always limping for a few days.

I know a guy who has a painfully hard time gaining weight. He drops to a dangerously low weight despite eating normally.
He works with some people who need to lose weight and some of those people belittle him & laugh at him. They do it right in front of him. "I wish I had your problem!" This one woman often airquotes the word "problem" like she doesn't believe him.
They have cannot empathize, show compassion even when it's obvious that he's miserable.
Occasionally, at work, he'll eat a cookie and God help him if one of ^^^ women sees him. When they do, they usually whoop it up, "You sure you want to eat that COOKIE! You might gain an ounce!"
It's a sad reflection on them that they can't read his expression well enough to know when to stop or to know not to start.

Stick up for him, enree. Call the bitch out. Flash her your ripped guns and and a warning glare. Shut her up proper. I feel for skinnies, people used to give me a hard time but they stopped, when I gained weight. Gaining weight for people to leave you alone, eating so people will leave you alone...it's sad.

yeah, joe is at the more extreme end of the scale of someone with a fast metabolism. maybe there is something wrong with him? he eats like an obese person, seriously. we can hardly afford to feed him.

my metabolism has sucked ever since i was a kid... i used to be active and ate things like all the other skinny kids, but for some fucked up reason i've always been fatter.
i tried to take some diet pills awhile back and it caused my chest to hurt really bad like i a boulder was crushing my chest... i think it fucked up my thyroid too because a lot of weird things have been happening with my hormones... i mean they worked, for a second... i've gained some weight back, but not all of it... i hated the side effects, so i'm never taking that load of shit again!!
i know for a fact that i'm big boned, because i have a large muscle mass (for a girl), huge hips and rib cage... i'm only 5'6" and because i'm so husky everyone assumes i play contact sports like wrestling or football... the lowest i'm allowed to get is around 145-140 lbs, other wise I'll look anorexic or dead... my collar bones are always sticking out of chest now anyways...:p
i think i look fine, for my body shape, but you know society.... if you don't look like the skinny beanpoles in the magazines, somethings wrong with YOU!!

There is seriously something wrong with me. I was raised in a house where we never eat at the table, just on the couch while watching tv. My mom and dad are both obese, like my mom is 5'1" and 230 pounds, my dad's 5'8" and 250 I think (they'd kill me if I told anyone that). I've always been self consious and afraid of getting fat, and I knew my metablolism was slow. Now I rarely ever eat, and when I do it's junk food right when I get home from school, and I'm lazy as fuck. That's because I don't eat all day, and when I come home there's never anything healthy. I'm medium/normal, but I think I'm really malnourished. I'm also really picky. :(

I think mines on the slow side. My friends and I all share the same diet of pizza, fast food, and general junk food and I'm about the biggest.
I've started working out every day now after school. It's one of the best things I've done. It feels good to work out every day.

My metabolism is not a problem presently. I am active --super active-- the whole time I'm at work. Plus I bike back n forth to work. My family has a history of poor fitness and my mother probably died from complications with her weight.
I eat more sugar than I should probably. It helps me a lot that there are potlucks and dinner co-ops and the like around here where people cook some nutritious food, otherwise I'd probably eat cereal and sandwiches all day long.
Back when I was in high school and really chubby I would have thought it would be a dream come true to be able to eat anything and not gain weight. That was back when I didn't pay for groceries. Basically my job makes it so that I have no choice but to eat a lot. Work to eat. Eat to work. Caught in the cycle. Not so bad as all that I suppose.
