Concert film
Concert films tend to be pretty same-y: Swooping cameras capturing performance footage and shots of celebrating crowds; and after all the hits are played, everyone goes home happy.
Part of their appeal is they present the concert experience no one really gets: The songs may be the same, but the extreme close-ups of the artists and flawless performances edited together from multiple shows don't quite replicate what it's like to go out with your buddies, sit in the cheap seats and watch your favorite band.
In an effort to realistically capture the concert-going experience, the Beastie Boys handed out cameras to 50 fans at their Oct. 9, 2004, Madison Square Garden performance, and had them shoot whatever they wanted, including their bathroom breaks.
From the resulting footage, they fashioned "Awesome; I F-----' Shot That!," which premieres Thursday in theaters around the country, including two in Metro Detroit. The 90-minute film includes more than 20 songs, among them "Sure Shot," "So What'cha Want" and "Ch-Check It Out," all captured from actual fans' perspectives.
Could fan-shot concert films be the wave of the future?
Maybe. Coldplay is outfitting fans with cameras at its Toronto shows next week to shoot concert footage for an upcoming DVD. Who knows, if the trend continues, maybe you'll soon be saying, "Awesome; I F-----' Shot That!" too.
"Awesome; I F-----' Shot That!" shows at 8 p.m. Thursday at the AMC Livonia 20, 19500 Haggerty Road in Livonia. Call (734) 542-9909. The movie is also showing at 8 p.m. Thursday at United Artists' Commerce Township Stadium 14, 3033 Springvale Drive, in Walled Lake. Call (248) 960-5801.
