View Full Version : What's with the Marilyn Monroe girls?

A lot of girls idolize Marilyn Monroe. They hang her photos in their bathrooms. What's with this? She was beautiful, an icon.
But why her? And what does it say about the young women who love her?
They're big busted and she reminds them that busty is beautiful? She reminds them how to be sexy? They think she's hot and they're just kind of hot for her?
You hardly ever see celebrity idol worship of say, Katherine Hepburn or Bette Davis, or Marlene Dietrich...unless the person is a real film buff.
Who here is a Monroe girl? I mean you collect her image and you have at least one picture of her on display. Explain yourselves.
Isn't this Droppin Science's department? *romshit*

Oh my God, my aunt is obsessed with her. She has posters of her all over the wall in her room in the basement, it's kinda creepy. I don't know why though, you'd have to ask her I guess. :p

I saw an episode of Miami Ink and some girl got a huge tat of the Worhal Marilyn painting on her back. She was some feminist too.

She was a sex symbol back then, but nowadays it seems only women make a big deal of her. Audrey Hepburn is idolized similarly. It must just be a fashion thing. Fashion idols they wish to emulate?

If Marilyn Monroe was my friend's aunt, I'd probably tell him she's a massive whore.

But would you seriously want to look like Bette Davis?

that's just it though. putting up a poster of marilyn monroe or having her face on your purse doesn't make you look like her.

Well, I didn't know if it's just that these girls want to look like her or what. Bette Davis had those eyes, the "Bette Davis eyes"

I know, it's just that Bette Davis looks like moldy fried rice.

I have pictures of The Rock all over the house. Mostly posters, stills and promo shots from The Scorpion King, though. Nothing gay.

I don't idolize anyone from Hollywood. It does nothing for me when magazines feature famous people on their covers, in their stories.
I'm impressed when I read about women who, with success and without compromising themselves and their values, have and maintain the things they want in life.
It's much more inspiring to me to see an everyday woman who has stayed healthy and who is content given the stresses from each of the decades of her life. She has a glow, a strong but not-bitchy attitude. A kind of wisdom and patience that settles over her with time. To me, that's pinup material.

Oh?
Anyways, the idolization is simply because Marilyn Monroe died young and got it on with some Kennedys.
The tragic figure mixed with being gorgeous is what did it for people.
P.S. - Not to mention there's conspiracy theories over her death. Some say the Kennedys had her killed. Others have insinuated she was killed because she knew about the JFK assassination (which would have been the next year). What a tangled web...

Well the whole Marilyn thing is not my trip, but I can sort of see where it comes from. It's not unlike the James Dean thing - beautiful and damned, live fast die young and leave a beautiful corpse, and all that. There's an aspirational 'never get old' sort of thing about that that's appealing to some people.

Yeah, but James Dean is the bees knees.

I have a picture of Elijah Wood by my desk. He's wearing a tank top and he looks dead, but very pretty.
marilyn monroe stuff is so 90's. I mean, have you seen those ridiculous posters with marilyn, elvis, james dean, and bogart? there are tons of them. they're so stupid I could spit!

You forgot Bettie Page. Not that I care, but... Most girls/guys who idolize her are really annoying and shop at Hot Topic.

I always noticed that gay guys tend to be all about her and Gone with the Wind
While butchy lesbians are all about Elvis
At least that's the way it seemed to be years back in Atlanta

Marilyn had a certain vulnerability that people liked, maybe identified with to somedegree. She was also someone who took risks. she was glamourous.

I just read this Bettie Page (http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/la-me-bettie11mar11,0,7767969.story?page=1&coll=la-mininav-business)thing the other day...I guess theres a movie coming out this year about her.
Marilyn ...I really don't know why...she does wear some very cool clothes, she even looked great in flannel and jeans. With Marilyn Monroe it just seems as if you know her....the minute she speaks. She's bigger than life yet very humble.

If that's your goal in life you can always date Ted Kennedy.
Two birds with one stone.

I have a big Audrey Hepburn fixation because she was extremely beautiful, a very talented actress, and quite charitable in her off-screen life. She's the eximplification of what a lady should be, and I don't even know why that appeals to me considering the fact that I'm not ladylike by any stretch of the imagination. I just think her whole image and style is timeless, and perhaps that's what people see in Marilyn Monroe.
