ok i've set up a 2 comp-piece network in my house.

C1 (comp 1 - main comp) is running the internet and C2 (comp 2) is connected to C1 with a crossover cable and a network ethernet card. i want C2 to run the internet OFF C1, which is my goal. it's pretty much set up - the network connects and everything but C2's comp passes fuck all packets and receives the same.

just some help for increasing the 'speed' on the other end of the network - so C2 can use the net with no problems.

I'd like to help but I really have NFI when it comes to sharing the internet like that. Last time I did it was under windows 95 or something like that, with a dial-up connection where any speed loss would be unnoticable. Ideally you should get a router (adsl router/modem) and do it like that

I have a cheap, non wireless router and cable that cost 40 bucks all up. It does the job for the most part, except it doesnt allow me to use soulseek for some reason. I figure its because of the hardware firewall but i cant seem to open any of the ports. Anyway its still a pretty good option.

some things to maybe check out:
the cross-over cable - is it new/made/used? It may be a problem with the cable, where it is just good enough to keep a bad connection. Otherwise it may be the network card.

you can open the command line and use (start, run, "cmd")
ping -t address

and see how good/bad your response is between the two computers. i.e. from C1: ping -t 198.162.1.5, where 198.162.1.5 is the address of C2.

you could buy an new cross-over cable just to test out the difference (shouldn't be that expensive at all), and if that doesn't change things, get a new cheap network card (or maybe two that are the same to reduce compatability problems) and give er a whirl.

When you say it "connects" what do you mean exactly? Have you set up the protocols properly? Do you have a (windows) firewall turned on on either computer?

yeah firewalls are on, on each computer. C2 actually has pop-up in the bottom right corner saying "Local Area Network - connected at 100mp/s" or something like that? - basically it's an operational network - it's just the other end (C2) is really fucking slow and seems...useless to be running right now if it ain't passing/receiving packets.

Make sure that :

-Both computers belong to the exact same workgroup
-'File and Printer Sharing' is enabled on both PCs.
-disable any and all firewalls until you get the 2 PCs connected especially if you're running Norton I can't count the number of times Norton was at the source of fuckups.

last 2 pointers definately apply; i got both firewalls up and norton cranking on each - and i chose not to select 'file and printer sharing' as well... cheers man.
