of the pedal kind.
I am looking into getting a bike, most likely a mountain, soon. I want to commute to work (only 4 miles away) on a bike to get some more excercise and to save on gas and wear and tear on my truck.
Thing is, i have been out of the bike loop for about 3-4 years. I had a bike in college that i used also for some little mountain riding. It was a nice Schwin (before huffy bought them) that i got for around $300. I liked that bike and i would like to get something for around that price that at least will not break on me in two minutes and one that i could upgrade easily.
I would like to have one with disc brakes and one that needs bike shoes but i can add those types of pedals later.
I like something that can take a beating on a trail and then be fine on a road.
I was looking at a specialized one but that was around $600-$700 :-/.

how much do you want to spend?
Mr. Boomin'Granny
03-20-2006, 12:48 AM
Between $300-$400.
I know that puts me in a decent range to start out with.
TurdBerglar
03-20-2006, 12:50 AM
you can get decent hardtails(bikes with front suspension but no rear suspension) at that price. i would not get a full suspension at the price. you would rather have better components than the rear suspension.

this is about 500 http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1019600&f=19
trek make great bikes and offer life time warrenties on their frames
the non disk brake version is 100 less. disk brakes aren't really all that necessary. rim brakes do just fine

in fact this is better than the disk version of the other one and it's about the same price. it's just lacking disk brakes. http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1022600&f=19

Just visit you LBS (Local Bicycle Shop) for assistance on finding one within your price range and with the desired features you're looking for.(y) And steer clear from pawn shops and department stores by all means because $300 - $400 bucks can fetch you something decent quality at most any bicycle shop.

03-20-2006, 01:28 AM
most bikes in the same price range are pretty much the same. so it doesn't really matter what you get. just look at warranties. the warranty on mine allows me to "break" my frame once a year and get the next years model's frame.

I posted a thread similar to this a while back...
I want a bike myself, but my bum's too big and I don't want to look like an ass riding about town. It would be, like, Queen vs. Queen fun. :"\ I don't like those skinny wheels either because of rocks and stuff.
Carry on.

Um, yes there is a problem if you're like this man who pedals by my house everyday and reeks of B.O. when he passes by. WOF, WOF
I just don't see a fat ass hanging off a seat very attractive, especially if it's my ass.

hey! I rode my bike today! It's a schwinn from the 70's. I had to fix the brakes first though, but actually the back one isn't fixed, it's sticking somewhere, so I need to lube the cable up or something. I just rode with front brakes today, which ended up kinda scary a couple of times when I was holding my cell phone in my left hand and forgot about the back brakes not working...but I was just meandering down a side street looking for apartments for rent, nothing extreme.
I was sad to see that one of the rims had some wicked rust on it, but I rubbed it off with olive oil. I don't know why I used olive oil, just seemed like I should.
ah, but the old gray mare ain't what she used to be. well, it's blue actually. my butt hurts.

Schwinns never die ! ( at least the old ones made to last don't). So find a shop simular to the one that I work at that reconditions used bikes at an affordable price.(y)

cruisers are for old ladies and people who shouldn't be riding bikes anywhere other than a sidewalk on a suburban street. or I guess down a beach bike path or something.
my ex kept telling me I should get one of those. but I like speed thanks.
I really would love a proper bicycle that goes really fast with less effort, but alas, I'm poor, and it would probably be stolen as my previous two bikes were.

some cunt is puncturing our bikes at work. my rear tyre got punctured the other week - the front got done a month ago-ish? i rocked up to work the other week and one bloke's BMX had a flat tyre too; it's sitting in the staff locker room cause he hasn't been able to take it home yet.
probably serves me right for leaving it outside on the rack. time to leave it inside.

trek makes great bikes
I would have to venture to say if not the greatest mountain bikes. I've had mine since 90, it was given to me as a graduation present and it's been through some rough riding.
If boomin wants a pretty decent mountain bike in the price range of 100-300 bucks, I would recommend Mongoose. I've seen them with decent derailers and sprockets with quick release hubs and what not for $250.

...I just got a used Bianchi hybrid for $200, almost exactly what you're talking about. It went for about $700 ten years ago. Hardly ever ridden before I got my hands on it, so it was a sweet deal. (y)

trek, specialized and GT offer probably the best bang for the buck with their lower end bikes. keep those three companies in mind. and look into used bikes. sometimes you can find great deals on bikes in mint condition. but you just got to know what makes a bike good so you're not getting ripped off. you need to find someone who knows and go to some of the local bikes shops. i've found some nice full suspension bikes that originally retailed around 1000 or more at half that. usually the shop will offer like a free tune up too when you buy shit from them so you'll get the bike in near perfect condition.

that cruiser's name is Kosmo :o
okay, one for me too, guys. i want one that's reliable and that can keep up with matt's if we should go for rides together. again, i can't afford much more than maybe $200-$300, but it doesn't have to be pretty. as long as it's sturdy and all.
and sak, you can always change the seat.

most big name companies make WSD(woman's specific design) frames. basically just use the same advice i gave boomin but just don't spend as much. trek has an assortment of wsd frames. i don't know if you'll be able to find one in your price range but a WSD frame isn't completely necessary it'll just fit you better than a normal frame.
sab0tage
03-20-2006, 04:58 PM
I reckon companies make a fortune on WSD bikes (they are generally only available in the more expensive models) when they're not really necessary unless you're a hardcore/very frequent rider. Get a guys/youth bike you like and save some $'s
TurdBerglar
03-20-2006, 05:04 PM
yeah frames usually come in many sizes. i wouldn't go the youth route. just try to look for the smaller(smallest) guy frames. boomin is gonna need a larger frame than normal and you'll need a smaller frame than normal. which may be difficult. all the shops i've been to mainly carry the frames in the midrange area. but the shop should have no problems and will be very willing to order one specifically for you. the best thing you can do is by a bike that fits you more than anything else.

I agree, and going with a frame with a sloping top tube will help you. Also most good bike shops will be happy to change saddle/stem etc to suit you.

bike shop owners tend to be pretty damn cool. don't be affraid to ask questions and shit. for the most part they seem to be pretty damn happy that someone actually came in and bought a bike today or even just to looked at some bikes. a lot of times if you spend of enough money they will throw in some free shit like tubes, water bottles or even one of those all in one tool doohickies. stupid shit, but still free. and alot give you a coupon for a free tuneup within the next 6 months. you gotta be careful though sometimes. i've seen some owners not sell shit to people becuase they think that person is a reckless asshole for not owning a fuckn' helmet.
