Great concert (I saw them the night before at George Mason).....but after 3 or 4 songs, I got tired of the constantly changing camera angles...it almost gives you a head ache......
and it wasnt the complete concert, some songs were cut out...
but did like the behind the scenes shots...
overall......B-

Where did you sit in the theater? Perhaps you were sitting too close to enjoy it.
How full was the theater?
valvano

middle of theatre on the aisle.....
i think if they didnt make the camera changing so fast paced it would have been better......you spend so much time adjusting to the changes in cameras you loose the actual concert experience
i'd say about 50/60 or so people were there....2 theatres here in richmond showed it

How did the audience react? Did people applaud and sing along?

some lady cheered when they play intergalactic.....

Yeah, that does sound like a downer.
I agree it was overrated. The best angles were the pro shot ones. The fan shots made me car sick. The Hornblower flick was wack, but I did appreciate Adrock's 2 finger ring!!!
valvano
03-23-2006, 09:39 PM
definitely, all the camera changes took away from the whole film.....
yeah, the 2 finger ring was pretty cool. and the loft bed.

What made the Hornblower mini-movie wack? Tell us about that movie.
RE songs cut: Cut due to samples?

MCA should of played Hornblower like he always does. The only part that was good was when MCA and King Adrock made a cameo. The rest was boring *yawn*!

well, one of the cameras had the digital time running on it, and it wasnt corresponding to the time that passed in the movie. i know some things had to be edited out, etc. but the movie started at 8, the hornblower was done by 8:15 or so, they went straight to the beastie movie, and it ended by 9:50....
thats 1 hour and 35 minutes.......something had to be cut out...i know the mmm intro wasnt complete....at least compared the previous night in fairfax...

I disagree. I thought the Hornblower movie starring David Cross was hilarious, and the camera cuts were no worse than anything mtv would do back in their music video days.
Just got back from Buffalo, NY screening. There were about 30 people there not dancing or singing.
It really captured the feel of a BBoys show.
valvano
03-23-2006, 09:53 PM
there's a big difference between 3-4 minutes of constant camera cuts and 1.5 hours of camera cuts
if you like it, great! just to me, it turned me off to the whole movie...maybe i am getting too old...

Well i just got back from watching it in New York and as the title says.. it was an awesome night withthe beastie boys. I can see where you are comming from about the camera angles changing but thats what made it awesome. I was at the concert at the garden in the front row, and this movie was an Aplus and simply genious!

Anyways, I'm pretty interested in these less-than-gushing reviews, so people keep sharing!

They did cut out a little of mmm's intro and of course it seemed faster they skipped the parts that made you wait for the boys to get on stage before the instrumentals.

Gratitude they movie was incredible, it took awhile to get used to the switching camera angles, and for some shots i wished they would have stayed with the pro shots, but the different angles were sometimes raw, which gave me the raw live feel. Also the fast cutting of sabotage helped really conveyed the excitement of being there live
the movie really captured what it was like to be at a beastie boys show from every fans perspective
My spot was giving away free posters and post cards. I got a ton!

just got back!!! Fuckin'ncredible!!! I guess I shouldn't give any spoilers but it's hard not to... The hornblower short is great, and the whole fuckin thing was amazing!!! I won a long sleeve tshirt with Awesome on the front and I Fuckin' Shot That on the back, plus I talked them into giving me a poster after it!!! I am seriously getting the poster framed tomorrow with my ticket stub in it. Can't wait to discuss all the details after it opens on the 31st!!! i never had a single problem with any of the editing at all.. i was very impressed by it... they couldn't have done a better job... on my way home i felt pumped like i was coming home from a real beastie boys concert!!! WOW (y) (y)

Just saw it and liked it a lot, but I'll have to agree with valvano epseically the the part I highlighted:
i think if they didnt make the camera changing so fast paced it would have been better......you spend so much time adjusting to the changes in cameras you loose the actual concert experience
Those fast cuts almost made me dizzy sometimes.
Hornblower's day-in-the-life thing was good too.
Lots of people sang with the songs and clapped; I guess there were around a hundred people there. Two other theaters showed it too.
Ill be buying the dvd. (y)
now gotta go eat becasue no way was i paying what they wanted for a friggin hot dog!!

i thought i was going to puke cuz of all the camera angles... my heart started hurting a while... that movie should have a warning sign like at IMAX... hey!! what if you could see this movie at IMAX?? that would be sweet!!
i kept my promise and screamed sexual comments to the screen and danced!!
kisses!!! loved that show!!

I went to the one in Pittsburgh tonight, i loved it! There were some great fans their.
I seen at least 12 adidos jackets..(either green blue)
They done a great job with the editing.
I wanted to get up and dance and act silly, but out of the respect for others, i didnt do it. Im sure some of them felt the same as me.
Also, when i attended the fairfax show in 2004, i remember liking "somethings got to give" better than any other song, (i dont know why, its just fucking great live) and with the movie I feel the same. It was great.
.... I didnt really talk to any fans except in the bathroom. Some guy went to the philly show and one of them said they went to lollapolooza. Of course I had to brag about being front row at my concert, in front of mca and that large ass speaker and not being able to hear for a week. (y) GOOD TIMES

Only six people in the Jersey theater. The Hornblower shit was wack.I was at the MSG show, they cut out a ton of shit.I was a little dissapointed to say the least. For as long as it took I felt it could have been better. There was actually seven people but one dude got up and left after about ten minutes.

i think anyone would agree that this is a great movie for beastie fans that have never been to a concert?
I got goose bumps alot while watching:
MMM intro,
hearing adrock say hes not gonna fuck up shake your rump "like he did last night".....which was at the show i attended the night before. (he didnt really fuck up shake your rump, he fucked up sure shot..but its all fun)
Hearing the instrumentals/gratitude/sabotage
and i think hearing adrock say HELLLLLLLLLLL BROOOOKLYNNNNNNNNNN would give anyone goose bumps

Yeah...Posse was the only song cut. They didn't show the shoutout videos either. So it went pretty much directly from the instrumental set to Open Letter.

I was at the MSG concert and the screening in NYC last night. They cut a lot of the between-song chatter, and also cut the first take of Brass Monkey, which Mike D fucked up. You can hear Adrock say "goddammit Mike!" rightbefore it kicks in in the film, and think that was his way of saying "dont fuck it up again". They also didnt show all of the video clips (will ferrel as GWB, etc...). I really liked the hornblower short and the concert movie. I was worried the edits would be too quick - dont get me wrong, they were very fast - but it wasnt enough to make my head hurt or anything. I was really impressed by the humor and the effects they put into the editing. That kept it from being a bit monotonous. The theatre was full and the Beastie Boys came out for a Q&A. Needless to say, it was worth the 10 bucks.

I saw the movie in Boston. Decent size crowd, one guy VERY excited pumping his fist (love it). I knew I would be bopping around in my chair so I sat in the very back. The Hornblower movie was pretty funny, although I can see it being something I thought was funnier the second time around. I loved the entire movie I thought the camera angles and shots were going to bother me too but I was at that same concert in atlanta and austin and it was the full experience. The bass in the movie theater was pretty good but if they had piped in the smell of weed and made it louder, it would have been right on. Did it make anyone else an even BIGGER fan of ben stiller??

Interesting comments from all. I saw it in Chinatown in DC. "A Day in the Life..." was pretty amusing, but not exceptional. I agree that it might be even funnier after another few viewings (come on, DVD!).
As for "AIFST," I loved it. I saw them at the 9:30 Club in DC, then in San Francisco and Fairfax, VA this time around, and I thought it captured quite well the whole concert experience. Still love the instrumental interlude, from that float thing they came out on to the chill vibe itself. "Something's Got to Give" has always been one of my favorite B-Boys songs, and it sounded great live and in the flick. I thought some of the effects were cool, especially some of the black and white stuff and the stop-action shots of Keyboard Money Mark near the end. The scenes of them in the elevator waiting to get to/from the arena stands were great; the quiet and elevator music was the perfect contrast to the concert itself. Also liked the post-concert shots of everyone in the dressing room. And the intro overlooking NYC taking us into the Garden? Sick.
The theatre was probably 50-60% full. A number of fans getting into it (some chairs and heads bobbing), and a few times where you'd hear positive comments out loud. And applause at the end, which was cool.
Can't wait for the DVD!

you'll definately need your rest that friday, for sure!!... you're pretty active for an "old" guy;) i mean if the bboys could do do all that running from corrador to corrador in the film why not?? it's not how old you are, it's how young you feel!! i'm only 21, but feel like i'm 70... sigh, i need to get in shape and drinking beer and smoking ain't really helping:p
