Ahh the Beastie Boys, when they're good; they're good. When they're off; they're off. The Hornblower film was such a letdown, it could of been so much more. For starters use a Steadicam. Oh well que sera, sera.
The concert film needs more Mike D on the beach, Mutton Chop Prism, Ampeq Bass Macro type shots and less non-stabilized pixelvision camera shots.
I don't know if it's me, but the newer songs off of tt5b and hello nasty lack the intensity of everything done before. I'd go on a limb here and say that seeing the Young Black Teenagers perform back in 91 was more entertaining than Open Letter to NYC was in the film.
Oh well those are my random thoughts. Still love the Beastie but more so for what they've done in the past.

Can you elaborate on why you didn't like it, other than the shakey footage?

Mr. Sunbeam,
Just curious, were you involved with this DVD project?
Thanks

No, I wasn't.
I want to know about both movies, and nobody is saying much.

The lack of a steadicam is 9/10's of the law. You had David Cross who played the part great, but other than the brief conversation with the Adam's the day in the life went nowhere. I wanted to see how the man creates, not how he passes time by. It was Einstein doing single digit multiplication.

Thanks for the details.

The highlight of mini-movie was the conversation with the Adams. Everything else was a very dry humor. Nothing exciting, just a typical, boring day in the life of Hornblower.

iI felt the beginning of the movie had potential but then it went kinda off downhill from there (which would have been great for hornblowers ski’s) I liked when he was trying to inspect the chocolate.

I have no idea where to post my review since there's so many of these threads so I guess I'll go with this one...
I came in late (the theater was in the middle of NOWHERE, and when we got there, we were at the WRONG one!! But it took us about 15 minutes to get to the other one with me driving like a maniac, so we were just a tiny bit late).
The Hornblower movie was a bit of of a letdown, yeah...I was just thrilled because i LOVE David Cross, so just thinking about them walking around with him while he did random shit like that made me laugh. I love when Yauch cracked up, and Ad-Rock's like "Well, I was mad, but now I'm just confused..."
The film was a BILLION times quieter than at Sundance, which sucks, really. After a while I got used to it, but at sundance I felt like I was really at the concert. I still fucking love it, though I wish they had done more playing around with things like the girl dancing, and the air guitar kind of stuff. About 6 people left the screening because they were bored I guess.

I think its important to understand that this movie was made to put fans in the shoes of the fans at the concerts. If they wanted to shoot a regular film of the concert (one camera) they could have just used the one up front.
I just think its important not to look at this for something its not, but what it's for.
Great sound at my theater as well. Hornblower's walking with the ski's hurt my ears

You can't say that, dude. It's gonna be better for some people than others. I feel bad for people who don't enjoy it, but I don't expect the second coming, either.
At this point i'm happy to have not seen it. I just wish I knew when I was likely to actually get the chance.
The worst part of the film was the fan involvement. If they made it 80% proshot and 20% fanshot, It'd be much better. The proshots and behind the scenes stuff made it cool! The beginning and end was 'awesome.' The editing and fan cams made me dizzy.

That was one of the funniest parts of the film -- it totally cracked me up. :D

FYI - the instrumental sections were amazing. Ricky's theme was on the same level as some Isaac Hayes type shit.

The Instrumentals set really made the movie flow... just when you feel like quick cuts are going to give you a seizure, the pace slows down and the visual imagery kicks in...
and every single performance reminded me how talented they were at their instruments...
Yauchs Bass solo on Sabrosa really cooks...

I think the whole point was to avoid an entirely proshot concert...
you want 80% pro 20% fans go help Coldplay shoot their next concert and watch the DVD have a five minute extra with fanshots...

there was only one part near the end where i actually thought i'd get a seizure, it was flashing back and forth really quickly and my eyes couldn't handle that...but wow it looked cool :p
instrumentals were the best, plus my friend got to see that the beastie boys
actually could play instruments. she was so surprised...haha.
