Just got back from the screening in Philly. It reminded me of the first time I heard Paul's Boutique, at first I though "What the hell...?" but after awhile, I really got into it. If anyone out there knows about editing film, you know that this was a friggin' masterpiece of editing, it deserves some kind of award (and for all you haters, don't ever compare this to a bootlegged concert video). I loved it. My highlights were the girl "dancing" with Mike D, The behind the scenes footage of the boys in the elevator (the music was great), and the Dark Side of the Moon reference with the light though the prism. Plus the theater let me snag the movie promo poster too. That bitch is getting framed tomorrow.

just got back!!! Fuckin'ncredible!!! I guess I shouldn't give any spoilers but it's hard not to... The hornblower short is great, and the whole fuckin thing was amazing!!! I won a long sleeve tshirt with Awesome on the front and I Fuckin' Shot That on the back, plus I talked them into giving me a poster after it!!! I am seriously getting the poster framed tomorrow with my ticket stub in it. Can't wait to discuss all the details after it opens on the 31st!!! i never had a single problem with any of the editing at all.. i was very impressed by it... they couldn't have done a better job... on my way home i felt pumped like i was coming home from a real beastie boys concert!!! WOW

*cut and paste from other thread

As I got inside the theater I met up with Weezman and Mrs. Weezman. Supercool folks. The ticket guy told me they sold about 100 tickets in advance and that the theater seats 300. I would say there were probably only 50-60 in there though.

I enjoyed the mini-movie, but I agree with Rich Cheney in the other thread. It could have been much more. A bit of dry humor. And pretty much a boring day in the life of Hornblower. The highlight for me was the meeting with the Adams.

I loved AIFST. The sound could have been turned up quite a bit though. It was not nearly loud enough. The movie did a great job of capturing the vibe of a concert for me. I think I was over-prepared for all the quick cuts and edits and thought there would actually be more.

Paul Revere was one of my favorite parts. With the bass effect. You can also see BBMBer Sethomas during Paul Revere.

not true in my case :(

i asked this lady and she had no idea what she was talking about so i became sad and didn't get the promo poster

I agree about the sound, it wasn't loud enough at all, but that was the movie theater's fault. I could have sworn that during "Paul Revere" the volume actually went down.

Raz, I don't advocate theft, but the second part of the lesson is "seek and ye shall find". you should have taken that shit and ran.

I'll repost my Norfolk, Virginia one here

I thought the Hornblower bit was funny..some parts at least...but I'd rather see Yauch play him than David Cross.

The concert film was great though :D , it brought back memories of the time I flew to San Diego to see them on 9/11/04...wouldn't say it felt like being there but close enough..there were some points were I'd rather here/see the songs being performed than the cut aways to the corridors and bathroom. Special effects were very ill..liked the sepia kinda look on Gratitude..I could go on and on though....sadly, the movie suffered from poor promotion (n) in this area..granted it was playing at 3 local theatres, I did my best to promote it at at least one of them as you can here: http://home.hamptonroads.com/calendar/details.cfm?eventID=52391 (that phone number with the 321 is one I made up) and I also got the word out here: http://events.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&eventID=56361.89196 ...not sure how the effort paid off, the Norfolk theatre was kinda sparse but more people than I expected..the local newspaper didn't have an ad for it. Beastie Boys haven't played Norfolk since 1992 so I was hoping more people would show up..had this been on a Friday or Saturday night, I think the house would be full...or this would be great at The Naro Theatre or one of those Cinema Cafe places maybe even Byrd Theatre in Richomd...that's my two cents.. peace.

went to the showing in pittsburgh...i loved it. the part with hornblower playing chess was priceless. the theater had the sound turned up WAAAY too loud, but whatever. of course, i loved AIFST, but what's even cooler is i went with some friends who weren't really fans, and they thought it was awesome.

there were maybe about 30-40 people there, and the theater gave out postcards and posters. very sweet.

Rambling:

OK you all, I just got back from the movie and....IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME!!! (!) It was all fun and humor through out the day in the life of Nathaniel Hornblower, but then that Oscilliscope thing came on and it got all loud my heart just started beating! I swear, then the bass (which wasn't much in my theater unfortunatly) kicked in and I was like "That's it I'm getting up!" But I didn't, instead I just tried to stay calm in my seat and shake my foot anticipantly (that a word?). Anyway, the whoooole movie was just what I expected it to be, it was THE greatest and I wish I woulda been standing the whole time. My friend, who doesn't know them much, likes them now I think. Some of the songs she's like "OOH I love this song!" and on Sabotage she almost freaked out. :D I had so much fun. Mix Master Mike was fucking amazing, Doug E Fresh was fucking amazing, and all of the instrumental stuff I was really diggin. Something's Got To Give, oh my God. (y) The people in the theater were mostly still throughout it. Some parts they'd laugh or clap. Me, I was mouthing the lyrics and stuff but I didn't wanna disturb nobody you know. I LOVED the behind the scenes stuff where they had to do the encore and were runnin to the elevator, that was really really cool. The fans were CRAZY! God I wish I could go to a concert, and I swear I will next time if I get the chance, and I'd definatly have a hell of a time that's for sure. In my opinion, that was all worth the wait and I can't wait for it to come out on DVD. I <3 the Beastie Boys!!! :p

Houston was representing at my place. The movie, first off, was incredable and I have no complaints, other than theater sound could have been louder. Other than that it was awesome. All i got was some local radio shit, no promo stuff anywhere. But the one thing that made it better was the crowd I was with. They were clapping and singing along to every song. People really cheered when Mix Master did his thing up on the turn table. What can I say, Houston threw it down.

i agree about the sound, i was definately disappointed that the sound was lower than how i listen to those songs in my car. i sat in the back of the theater so i could watch the audience reaction and what not, but the audience was no fun! they pretty much just sat there...a few bobbing their heads. during the first song i was dancing and singing along in my seat like i usually do, but then i became self-conscience when people started staring at me like i was crazy. after a couple of songs i loosened up and continued my obnoxious dancing and started singing along probably louder than the movie....:o i enjoyed myself even though the audience disappointed me.

and i thought everybody would be clapping or cheering after every song and when the movie started, but that audience was so stiff...that's okay cuz i still clapped and cheered :)

i loved that movie and could watch it everyday, but i definately enjoyed it much much more at SXSW last week and i wish i got promo stuff like some of yall did. i was definately thinking about stealing the poster, but there were too many worker people around :(

I had a good time, I hated it at first, but after 2-3 songs I really got into it. It had the humour/charm that the beasties are famous for.

I really liked the movie. It wasn't as good as being at a Beasties concert (of course), but it made me remember how much I enjoyed the last tour. They did a wonderful job of capturing the vibe in the arena. I think it was a good idea that they downplayed the more insane aspects of the pit. Good choices all around.

I suck at this so just some random thoughts.

- I didn't really want to see the movie, and I suspected I wouldn't like it, but I got so excited when they started the opening music and panned over NYC and I was a goner at that point.

- Part of me wanted the fan footage to stop and just go to the more professional stuff, but honestly it wouldn't have been as good if they had done that. That would have been an HBO concert. Yauch knows what he's doing. (P.S. Could we maybe have an alternate cut on the DVD where we see all pro footage? Just for the historical record. :))

- The sound was great -- it was smart to replace the NYC soundtrack if that's what they did. The words were very clear.

- My friends aren't fans and they liked it too. They said that they felt like they had been at a concert.

- I'd like to see it with big fans. The movie reminded me of all the good times I had meeting fans at all the concerts.

- I disliked the Hornblower movie.

I went and saw it, there was like 30-40 people in the theater and nobody seemd too enthused. There was one guy that yelled things out a couple times but everyone else, as far as I could tell, just sat there. I saw a couple teenage girls walk out but I have a feeling they might have worked there and were just slacking off. I didn't get a poster, I came like right as it was starting and they only had so many to give out.

Thought it was great, like being back in the Garden. However I was ready to dance and the even though the theatre was 75% full, they were lame.

My cameo in the movie was at the end of the movie right before Gratitiude, getting an NYC variation of this shirt signed by DMC (http://hometown.aol.com/adrock1988/images/pic%201%20-%20vegas%20shirt%20back.jpg).

I was very lucky to get the only poster at the theatre, Pictures Below.

I got my hands on the a poster as well. This too was the only poster the theater had.

This was my second time seeing the film and I thought it was spectacular. I only have a couple of complaints and seems that others have the same complaints. The volume needed to be cranked up a bit and the audience at the theater just didn't seem to get into it as much as I did. There were only like one or 2 other people that would clap between songs and I didn't see too many other heads bouncing during songs. Their were only about 30 people in theater.

I also got the sign that was right above the theater entrance that reads "Awesome Night with Beastie Boys" in the Star Wars style Font. I will post a picture of it later.

Gotta work.

I saw it last night and was blown away. I don't know that I've ever seen a concert film that looked like this. You could probably take each song and release it as a video.

The Hornblower film. Genius to have gotten David Cross and when he stepped outside that first time, I laughed hard. I love him.

The concert. I have never seen the Beasties perform live, so this was amazing. There were lots of effects and so much movement...tons of that. Aside of a few times, the cameras never focussed on any one thing for too long so there was a lot to absorb. I could probably see it dozens more times and find something new each time. Lots of interesting clips interspersed--I had a real sense of the energy of the crowd as a crowd and also of individuals in that crowd itself.

I saw them do The Weave :D and was that one of Mike D.'s kids wearing the VW emblem?

I absolutely loved it and if it doesn't open in my city close to here on 31 March, I'll be pissed. Either way, I'm buying the DVD when it comes out.

My theater was maybe 3/4 full and the crowd was sedate given what we were watching, but I could hear laughter several times (good laughter--like people were really enjoying it) and applause at least once. I was surprised that no one was dancing--it was kind of hard to stay still while watching that.

MMM. Wow. He was crazy good. He looks so, so much better when he doesn't pose. The photos that I see of him--he wears an expression that's not flattering, but when he's doing what he does and is unaware of the cameras, he looks great and that side of him rarely comes out in photos.

When they were on tour, I read the concert reviews, so there wasn't much that happened that I didn't know about, but still, seeing it last night was fantastic. The blue-tuxedo portion: I'd read about that in the reviews, so it wasn't a surprise, but it was surreal anyway. The floating/moving stage and the lighting and then the added effects: great.

I can't believe that everything in that film came from one two-hour show. That's a lot of energy. Amazing editing job. I want it to be yesterday again so that I can see it for the first time.

I was at Lincolnshire too. I was expecting more people also. And what an odd mix of people... who brought those little kids?!? And the guys in the back that left 5 minutes into the movie but not before asking me "what would you think if this was interactive?" What was that about....

AIFST was sweet though but it could have been louder. Non-the-less I was really hyped afterward and cranked Check Your Head all the way home. I'm going to see it again on the 31st but at a different theater. OH, and I'm the lucky one who remember to ask for the movie poster out of the light box! A real life AIFST movie poster of my very own!

EDIT: I have one complaint: The bass guitar close up thing. Was that paid advertising from the guitar company? That pissed me off a bit. Then they did it again. Why do that fake guitar thing at all? Let alone twice?

I didnt really get pumped to see it either, but once it started- I got into it just like a concert. Smile on my face the whole time. The crowd was a dud (about 40 people) with no head bobbing, no singing, no nothing. I was into it so much my daughter told me to stop embarrassing her.
I also didnt like the Hornblower movie- seems like it started out funny, then just sort of fizzled. My daughter, however, loved it.

I also didnt like the Hornblower movie- seems like it started out funny, then just sort of fizzled. My daughter, however, loved it.I was planning on seeing it in NYC next Tuesday and was excited about that trip, but it fell through. So yesterday, as the day moved on, I began to realize how much I'd been looking forward to last night's premier and then when it was time for it to start, I was thrilled.

I reserved a seat ahead of time and when I went to get my ticket, the woman at the counter had not even heard of the movie. Which I thought was a really bad sign, but it was okay--I was just early and she was just a little out of touch. There was a reasonable crowd.

I liked the short. It wasn't scripted and that was cool. I laughed--the chocolate inspection scene, the walking-on-skis bits, the cemetery scene, running into the Adams (with Yauch laughing). I liked it a lot. I had really low expectations for that short going in, so maybe that helped. :) And I also expected that it would take place high in the Alps, so that bit was great to me.

Caught the show in Woodridge..or Woodbridge...something like that. Just know that it was the longest drive I have ever done for a movie....but was well worth it. The vibe was about the same as everywhere else....maybe 30 40 people. Strange thing...including myself...it was mostly older couples. Maybe only a handful of anyone under the age of 25. No promo stuff from the theater. I wasnt even sure if we were at the right place at first...no posters....was not listed on the showtime board...nothing. I had to ask if I was at the right theater. But all in all...great show that made me wish I had taken a trip to NY last year.

The theater we went to was very similar. There was at least 100 people there though, but they arrived at the last minute. Older couples sprinkled with a few under 25 also. We found one poster hidden near the arcade, but we too were wondering if we were at the right place. There were posters of the local radio station all over, yet we had been listening to that station and they never mentioned the movie. Oh, another odd thing - they let us into the theater at 7:30 and the movie was playing on the screen - it was Body Movin' - and we were thinking, oh great... spoiler!

Saw it last night in Santa Clarita, CA... thought the movie was dope, really captured the feeling of what it was like to be at that tour, brought back mad memories. the crowd in the theatre i was at tho didnt seem too impressed. that kinda sucked cuz i felt like gettin out my seat and singin along, i could barley sit still and most people were just sittin there silent. people didnt know what the hell to make of the hornblower short either, it was funny lookin at the expressions on peoples faces when that was on. no one seemed to get the beastie humor. and the lil part in the movie of mike d and the chick dancin with like palm tress in the background and shit was pretty hilarious. shoulda asked for the damn poster tho.. didnt even think about it. all around tho i liked it- think they did a good job. some crazy editing skills goin on there.

the movie was mad tight, the theater could have raised the audio like, at least 40% higher. it was on like silent mode or something.

it was the same as the concert I saw in Vancouver. I wept, I laughed, it was good times. Too bad the volume was so low. I did however think that the audio was genuine. They sounded the exact same in Vancouver. Obviously the track list was a little different but I think there was no dubbing.

I wish it could have been louder.

OK, here's my thorough review from what I remember last night..please correct any wrong info as I will be posting this on my website..thanks. (y)

“A DAY IN THE LIFE OF NATHANIEL HORNBLOWER” is a look into one day in the life of world renowned director Nathaniel Hornblower, most famous for his Beastie Boys videos. The Nathaniel Hornblower (aka Adam “MCA” Yauch) directed film stars comedian David Cross in the role of Nathaniel. The short film starts with Hornblower waking up in his New York apartment in the morning getting dressed in his bizarre Swedish. In a few minutes he puts on his favorite yodeling record and ready to start his day and finish getting ready. Next we see him grab his cross-country skis and poles and heads downstairs to the NYC streets, he has left his yodeling record playing on high volume as it echoes in the hallway and our hero has ascended on his journey with skis attached to feet and poles in hand across the asphalt street to his favorite coffee shop. Throughout the short film about his day, Nathaniel has a chess match with a dog who happens to also be a writer, wanders around the street on his skis telling passing motorists to “support the troops”, has his unattended skis and poles stolen from him while he demands he needs to sample the chocolate at one of the Jacque Torres Chocolate Factories in NY. Elasped time in Hornblower’s day is kept by a cuckoo clock. The major highlight midway through the short features our superhero running into two of the Beastie Boys, he greets them with “Hello Adams” to Adam “Adrock” Horovitz and his nephew Adam Yauch. Noticably missing is Mike D, but he quickly becomes the subject of discussion, Horovitz is dismayed that most of Hornblower’s work on the movie or in general is focused on Mike, and reminds Nathaniel that him and Yauch are also in the group. The film winds down with Nathaniel Hornblower in a drunken stupor on the sidewalk, harassing people that walk by him and stare, and lambastes them for thinking he’s an Irish leprechaun. The film was funny at times but seemed kind slow, not to knock David Cross but Nathaniel Hornblower is best played by his creator Adam Yauch. Word is from ThinkFilms that the mini-movie will self destruct after it’s initial viewing, the jury is still out on whether that is a good thing. **(two stars)

“AWESOME I FUCKIN’SHOT”: In the autumn months following the summer 2004 release of the Beastie Boys long awaited album “To The 5 Boroughs”, the band set off on a tour of North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. Being that the Beastie Boys have always innovative and never content to became stales the tour became known as The Pageant and concert goers were inspired by the band to engage in the pageantry by wearing whatever the hell they wanted but to dress to impress. A dog show by Bob Moore’s Amazing Mongrels preceded the opening act and Beastie Boys on all North American dates. In 2004 and today’s technological world of iPods, Blackberries, and whatever else keeps the world inter-connected these days, the concert film “Awesome I Fuckin’ Shot That” directed by Adam Yauch and Jon Doran was inspired by none other than some fan posting a video from the Pageant tour that was taken by a cell phone camera. For their biggest and those who have slept on the Beastie Boys over the years, this is a film for anyone. So the infamous story goes, when the tour hit NYC’s Madison Square Garden on October 9, 2004, the Beastie Boys bought 50 Hi-8 video cameras and handed them out to 50 fans (well, 48 if you don’t count Adam’s brother Oliver Horovitz and roadie/Beastie Boys hardcore drummer Amery Smith, whose names appear in the credits.) that were carefully chosen by their seating arrangements. The films opening sequence features the exact music and words about the 1980 Mariel Boatlift from “Scarface”, then the words switch to “Regardless, the Beastie Boys handed out 50 cameras…” etc, then the filming begins with a birds global eye view over NYC at night with a collage of Beastie Boys songs and plugs for the band as the backing soundtrack, before descending into Madison Square Garden as the crew sets up for the show. Backstage shows co-director Jon Doran instructing the 50 fans on shooting the concert to do whatever they want when the lights go down and the magical red button is pressed, here is where the movie title is derived from when he says “You can look back at this twenty years from now and say awesome, I fucking shot that!” Next we see the Beastie Boys, Mixmaster Mike, Alfredo Ortiz, Money Mark, and Doug E. Fresh in a group huddle getting motivated for the show using the basketball terms “only good looks, only good looks” as their rallying chant. Mixmaster Mike heads to the arena, vinyl in hand with the words “Get Ready” inscribed on the label, once he reaches his DJ Booth and drops the needle on the record and proceeds to scratch and cut it up, it’s evident that all mayhem is about to break loose. The Beastie Boys enter the arena and take the center stage to “Triple Trouble” and the camera work is one of the most dizzying ever as the viewer seems to see all 50 shots including the stage cameras all at once but it quickly cools into easier views of the band and audience but at a quick pace with some of the most astounding special effects throughout the film. “Root Down” is the only song performed where the entire camera footage is from one of the professional cameras place near the front of the stage, giving the viewer a small but not really needed break from all the camera angles. A split screen of 50 plus views appear during and before some of the songs showing just how many different pieces of film were used to make this masterpiece. Laugh out loud moments occur when some dude films his entire trip leaving the arena and into the restroom, keeping the film rolling as he relieves himself, washes his hands, and heads back to show. The subject of muse appears again when a girl in the crowd is superimposed on stage dancing with Mike D, and then both are superimposed against a fake backdrop of a tropical beach. From the footage of some fans trying to sneak backstage to the dressing room, to the vendors dancing, and from the hyepman guy filming that invited everyone to get excited to be on the DVD, it was apparent that the fans recorded everything. Notable moments include the rare performance of “Hello Brooklyn” from Paul’s Boutique that fits nicely with the hometown crowd, celebrity cameos of DMC and Ben Stiller, the hype performance of the Doug E. Fresh providing his original human beat boxing for the beat of “Time To Get Ill”, and Beastie Boys doing their infamous dance move “TheWeave” during ‘Shake Your Rump” where the weave in and out of each other in a circle. Mid-set we see why the tour was called The Pageant after the Beastie Boys disappear backstage while Mixmaster Mike cuts and scratches, soon after the band launches into the funky instrumental track “Sabrosa” and the band appears on a lighted parade float dressed in powder blue prom-like tuxedos flanked by Money Mark on keyboards and Alfredo Ortiz on percussion, they go on to perform “Ricky’s Theme” and the socially conscious Pink-Floyd vocal effect styled “Something’s Got to Give”. Once the instrumentals are over its back to the hip-hop and the three emcees break into their hometown anthem “An Open Letter to NYC” then some recent hits, a sing along of “Paul Revere” and close the initial show with almost a dozen more tracks including their biggest hits “Body Movin”, “So What’cha Want”, and “Ch-Check It Out”, each shot with it’s own special effects. For those that caught the tour in 2004 and thought the show was over at that point, well here’s the chance to see what you missed or the closest thing to being in person. Professional camera footage follows the Beastie Boys into the elevator as they make their way up to the nosebleed section of the arena, escorted by a few bodyguards, upon re-entering the arena they start performing “Intergalactic” surrounded by hordes of fans clamoring over them and around them, a very hype moment in the film. Next, the Beastie Boys are literally running back into the elevator to headed back to the stage where their instrumental setup awaits them. Yauch immediately plays fuzz bass riffs of “Gratitude” and the crowd is once again in awe of how the band just went from way up in the high seats rapping to back onstage playing instruments in a matter of minutes, a feat not easily pulled off, the song features some amazing sepia like effects. “Sabotage” closes the concert is dedicated to their nemesis George W. Bush in the midst of his re-election campaign, the band is followed backstage into their dressing room where everyone is wrapping up for the night, and post show interviews feature Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor as well as other fans talking about the show. Although sometimes grainy but all the way extraordinaire, after seeing this film whether one is a diehard Beastie Boys fan, novice, or not a fan at all one is most likely to exclaim “Awesome, I Fuckin’ Saw That.”

Went to the Regal Transit AIFST showing last night. I got there around 7:40pm, assuming we were too late and would have crappy seats. I asked the usher if they were already seating, and to my surprise they hadn't even started seating. The lobby was empty. WTF? Where were the B-Boys fans?

Got into the theater to get seats and there were maybe 15 people in there.

My thoughts (as if anyone cares): The Nathaniel Hornblower film sucked. It was sophomoric humor at best. Reminded me of something I might do with my friends over a weekend if we came across a video camera back in high school. I was surpised at the poor writing / acting. If it's on the DVD, I won't notice, because I'll never watch it.

The main film was awesome. Not a dull moment for me. Definitely worth watching again when it comes out on DVD.

You know, I wondered about this. Some songs vocals sounded TOO good to be from the live recording. Think they'd overdub studio tracks? That would be pretty lame in my opinion.

Here's what Yauch said:

"the movie has a lot of editing and fixes in it. for several of the songs we took versions from other shows on the tour that were tighter and subed them in. so all of the footage was shot at MSG, but some of the music is from other shows on that tour. but i tried to keep the snot in wherever possible."

Hm. Not a true document of the evening. Still entertaining. I guess it's ok if the goal wasn't to present a document of one evening.

I think alot of people are afraid to let loose during a movie, not so much that they're not into it.

I mean would you want someone sitting next to you singing every song (esp. if they don't know the right words?) I bopped my head a bit and hand my feet moving and mouthed the words when I saw it to try not to bother the people behind me. This is why I think it would be awesome to have it in a bar/club venue where you could stand up and watch it so the atmosphere is more like being there.

I haven't read all the threads to see if this had it's own one yet, but the Union Square one states that the DVD is to be release July 25

The movie was dope. Wifey and I watched it here in Portland with a full house. No Seattle footage?

Great effects, but I did think I may go into convulsions with the editor changed frames with the beats of the music.....

The popularity of this event only proves to the BB's that they have to release some new shit.

I am so glad you got to see the pageant tour. Great review all around.

You can find where it'll be playing on the 31st here.

I can't believe it is going to play in here! In an art house, just as I had expected. I emailed that very theater a few times and they said they were working on it. I'm going to have to go again with my buddy who couldn't make it last night. :D

I wonder if they could have 50 alternate angles on a DVD, or if need be on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD so you could watch the whole show from one filmers camera if you wanted or mix your own version of AIFST?

The sound was loud enough in my theater because: (1) M clued me in to the need for loud sound in her SXSW review and (2) I am assertive and asked theater staff to keep it loud.

I think that given the cool things they've done with alternate angles before, they could work something special out here. It should be cool.

I am so glad you got to see the pageant tour. Great review all around.I know! I finally got to go even if it was like more than a year after the tour ended. :)

That movie gave me a real sense of what the Beasties give to a show. Wow.

I forgot to mention this: on the drive back, I was thinking that it would have been amazing to have seen it with friends who know & enjoy their music. That would have been so, so cool. If you're reading this and can swing it, find someone who likes them and go with him or her--it will heighten things that much more.

This was unlike any sort of concert experience/film that I've ever seen. It was a mix of music and art, really. So damn much to look at. I absolutely love that they gave up so much screen time to the fans. Doesn't that say a lot.

I had a great time and have been buzzing all day today because of it. (y)

Yes, I saw it with good friends who liked it and they think it's cool that I loved it so much, but I also thought that it would have been better if I was sitting with someone who knew the best bits of the songs ahead of time. I also saw two shows on the tour with people who aren't big fans and I had more fun at the other shows where I was in the pit with strangers who were also intense fans.

More on sound:

The staff at the theater I saw it at did a soundcheck and said that the film was sent to them too loud. I don't understand the technical stuff, but they said they were going to turn it down. I talked to separate staff people about it and pointed out that it was a concert film. They kept it loud.

It made me remember The Last Waltz, which starts with "THIS FILM SHOULD BE PLAYED LOUD."

When was that!!! I didn't see it! :(

When it was over I almost cried, seriously. I got all emotional and surreal feeling and started thinking deeply...did anyone else do this or am I just crazy? :D I think the people in the movie theater were really feeling it also because my seat was shaking and getting kicked. Not at first though, but later on they all lightened up and started clapping, singing, laughing etc... It was awesome, for real.

my dad was snoring and i kept poking him to wake up cuz he was embarrasing me!!:o

at first the noise wasn't that loud but then a girl went outside to tell them to turn it up cuz and about 5 minutes later it got super loud. i wish that people wud sing a long or sumthin but they just sat and watched quietly and laughed wen the funny stuff came.

i left at about 10PM and got home like 20/15 minutes later

Our theater also had the movie turned down too much, but that was better than what happened the Hornblower shortfilm, which strangely enough was WAY too loud (even when the actors wre just talking it felt like my eardrums were being pushed with a q-tip).

And a minor nitpick for the other audio/video nerds like me out there: while the theater (the Regal Edwards at Katy Frwy & 610 Loop) had a nice JBL surround system & despite the newsletter saying how cool the surround mix was for the movie, we didn't hear any surround effects at all. :( Heck we could barely hear any *stereo* sound for that matter. Though I'm 100% inclined to blame the theater for this problem. Anybody who has heard a concert film with a good 5.1 mix heard through a decent 5.1 system* knows how cool it feels - you literally feel like you are IN the audience hearing the band in front of you. But the Hornblower film DID have a nice 5.1 mix, and actually overall just sounded much better than the movie.

BTW: i'm not totally sure of this, but I am 98% sure this was shown with an industrial-sized digital projector system rather than film (like how people show PowerPoint presentations to large groups, but much more powerful). I could just barely see the horizontal lines in the picture but what was really obvious was that the picture was slightly squished at the top: on a computer monitor you fix that with the "trapezoid" menu option. But genreally the picture looked like good film, espeically the Hornblower short. This is supposed to be a new trend even with "real" movies, i.e. using diigtal cameras to shoot the scenes then the theater gets a disc-based copy of it & shows it via an LCD or DLP digital projector.

* starting around $600

Ahh.. hubby and I enjoyed the film and screening immensely! (I only wished it was louder.) It was great to see the movie surrounded by Beastie heads and have the guys pop in after.

As for the film, too many highlights to mention (a copout, I know).. the music, the fans, the love, all the little humorous touches (Hornblower film included). There's so much to absorb in this dense movie. I foresee a few hours spent with the DVD - I'm glad it's coming out in the summertime when I'll (hopefully) have more time to play.

fuck i wanted to make a thread with the same exact title!!! (without the "g") ;)

i went with my mom, dad and best friend. i thought the theatre would be empty, like seriously, but i was wrong! it wasn't full but there were some people already there when we arrived so me and my friend sat in the very back, center. :)

we came in about two minutes late, so i hope i didn't miss anything too awesome! (my dad is such a last minute person  ) as expected, my friend talked through most of the movie and asking me who everyone was and whatnot but that didn't ruin the awesome time i had. i was like the only one in the theatre who had the nerve to sing aloud to the songs and clap and cheer i guess! it was so incredible, i loved it and wanted to watch it OVER and OVER again i swear to god. it suuucked that my parents made us leave before the credits were over, i wanted to stay until somebody kicked us out or something.

my parents still make fun of me for dragging them along to see it, but i'm almost positive that the movie had some kind of effect on my "beastie-hating" friend because afterwards she asked me to copy some songs for her. of course i told her that would be hard but i managed somehow to put together 2 cds of songs that i picked out. i'm thinking of making a third one for her too...but hey! i converted somebody! i'm so awesome. no wait. the beastie boys. they're awesome.

i'm not gonna nitpick my favorite parts of the movie or try to describe how AWESOME it was because nothing i say would do it justice (wow that sounded so cliche) but maaan i can't wait for the dvd to come out now! where is it???!! c'mon!

okay that's my longwinded story that nobody's gonna read :D
it could be longer though. that was just the condensed milk version..so now i'm gonna read everyone else's "experiences" i guess! :o

following on from that, the first officially negative review popped up today >_> 6/10, so it's sitting at 90% on the tomato meter. I think it'll stay fresh :D

did anyone notice the most minor detail...

in between "A Day In The Life..." and AIFST, the Th!nkFilm logo came up, the "!" and the "i" were dotted to the sounds of the Xylophone from "Girls"
Yes!!!!! As soon as I heard that I turned to my boyfriend to explain lol.I noticed that too. I noticed other little things that, while I was watching, I thought I was sure to remember but in the haze of all of everything on-screen, it all blurred. I have to see it several times. Maybe take notes. :)

PS: I edited this post and hit the "Go Advanced" button but I have no idea of what that does. I'm probably posting this in every existing thread or something. :o

Do you really think that was chuck D posting about the movie? I am going to see the movie again saturday in philly, It will be like Deja Vu all over again. Also, has anyone heard any info about how many tickets were sold nationwide for the movie on the 23rd? It would be interesting to see how many people saw the movie.

Yeah, I don't think the PE Board would let anyone use the name mistachuck or impersonate Chuck D, plus he's made certain posts with stuff that only Chuck D would know, I think.

Indeed! Awesome; I FINALLY Fuckin' Saw That! It was well, nothing short of awesome. :D (y)

I'm still high from having seen this... a few things that stand out in my mind -

During Something's Got To Give, I couldn't help but pay special attention to the camera shot involving the bass guitar and remembering that image Yauch treated us to on the Oscilloscope site. this one to be exact (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v610/jdawgphotos/picofday.jpg) Proof that he was, in fact working dilligently on this film when we were all impatiently awaiting it's release.

I especially enjoyed the elevator scene before and after Intergalactic. I don't know why exactly, it was just such an interesting glimpse at the reality of what was happening at that very moment.

Afterwards, seeing them run back into the dressing room and begin to regroup was cool. I was like, oh yeah baby! Now we're post game locker room style! And sure enough, Mike's shirt came off and Horovitz was changing out of his britches! Crazy yo.

Oh! And lol, the clip of Mike dancing in sync with that girl and it was looped and then there was like a beach scene?! WTF! That shit was crazy funny.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank all you fabulous camera operators, you truly made this unique and special. I definately felt like this was created for me by fellow fans.

After the movie ended, a guy sitting right behind me said, "I definately have a new appreciation for the Beasties." Sounds as if this film is able to breathe new life into fans of days gone by.

God this was great! I cannot wait to see it again. (and again and again and again...:o ) Yet another masterpiece given to the world via the genius that is, Nathaniel Hornblower.

the best quote from the movie is at the end when the girl is being filmed and I think she is asked what did you think about the show, and she just starts dancing and going buck wild. then she goes, "you need words? that's bullshit". I don't think that there is a better quote in all the

from the disconnected, not-important information file:

Has anyone noticed that on the website for the movie, the original poster had the video cameras with little R2-D2's on top, but all the posters at the movies had them removed. Is George Lucas really that anal about people using his shit?

I take it you never heard of "LUKE & THE 2 LIVE CREW"?

they used to be called "LUKE SKYWALKER & THE 2 LIVE CREW".

Lucas sent them a "cease & desist" letter. Probably did the same with the Beasties.

I knew about (and have their TAPES, not CD's) 2 live crew, but that was a little different. The beasties (or who ever designed the poster) just added a little blue and white dome on the cameras, It's not like they called the movie "Return of the Jedi" or something. That's a shame if they really got a cease and desist order. takes Lucas down a notch in my book. I can see why he did that with 2 live crew, but a poster? c'mon man, ease up. (and I am a huge star wars fan too, got my own stormtrooper armor to prove it).

I went with my mom (sadly) haha she was singing and movin' her head. I thought people should have gotten up and sang along and danced like the concert. That would have been really cool, but instead, everyone was very boring. I liked the idea of having multiple cameras film the concert. Very cool.
