Signed a contract for a condo yesterday, we move in on Saturday. It's my brother and me, we're sharing a 2 bedroom 2 bath. To get a place out of the ghetto around here you have to pay a little more, but I feel we got a pretty decent deal. We've got a fireplace and ceiling fans, too. :)

Now I gotta find cheap furniture. And don't say IKEA, because a lot of their stuff isn't cheap. I went there for the first time today (College Park has the largest one in the US), and I wasn't as impressed with their prices as I should be.

Either way, good news. (y)

Oh that sounds great. I'd love a fireplace, and the place I have now is my first ceiling fan -- it cools the place down in the summer.

Some things at IKEA are cheap in price, but others are just cheap in quality. Lots of places that used to be cheap (Target/Pier One) are surprisingly expensive now. I have lots of cast off pieces I got for free from friends and family. I'm not picky. Get the word out that you're looking for stuff because people are always throwing things away.

Congrats. Not sure how the thrift stores are around your way, but you may find some uniqueness there.

I have to move myself. My rent just went up again. So silly really. I'm going to try and negotiate with these mofos tomorrow. But I'm already looking to move. Wish me luck.

Congratulations on the new place--it sounds wonderful! (y) I've never had a [working] fireplace before!

This time of the year, you should see yard & estate sales and usually if you can move the furniture yourself, you can often find amazing prices. Goodwill stores sometimes have interesting furniture as well but that's a bit of a gamble--usually, their stuff is ragged.

I bought a Mission style secretary's desk for $20 (yard sale) and I found a similar style of desk (not in the Mission style) for $30 (Goodwill). Both are wood, both fold down to reveal pigeonholes. The second one converts to a flat-top skinny, rectangular table--the other one has a slanted front. I had to do some work to remove the paint (!) from the Goodwill piece.

I also found a 100-year old vanity & bench for something like $40 (estate sale) and a terribly old coffin-style  cedar chest for >$20 (yard sale). They were very heavy, which is why, I suspect, they were so cheap. But amazing prices.

Good luck!
