View Full Version : THE CABLE GUY
is probably one of my all-time favorite movies. I loved it way back when it was fashionable to hate it. I'm convinced people didn't like it because it was the first movie where Jim Carrey wasn't a tool with a stupid-ass hairdo or a retarded superhero with a booger for a head.

I liked it too. It was the first movie that really cast a Jim Carey character in a darker light. The reason I found it so entertaining is that there were alot of laughs to be had but at the same time some of the circumstances 'Chip' was in creeped the hell out of me. The character building through flashbacks also made me pity him in a way as well. The cameo by Jack Black on the basketball court was fucking priceless.
I give it a (y) (y)
I haven't seen it. I don't like Jim Carrey at all.
No doubt. After he runs the suicide to warm up so he "doesn't pull a hammy" and Filter's Hey Man, Nice Shot starts up is tight.

I smell what you're sayin, bro-thar.
Before this movie, I really disliked Jim Carrey, especially after Ace Ventura. But I used to get free movie rentals from my girlfriend eons ago and for whatever reason decided to check it out. Probably since it was the only new release that there were a lot of extra copies of, and was therefore available for me to "rent".
I probably ended up watching it at least 4 more times that week. I thought it was ridiculously funny. From beginning to end. Everything from the underlying plot with the dude on trial for killing his brother ("Oh my God, oh my God, my twin brothers been shot! I think it was an asian gang or something! There was this guy, he looked asian! he was speaking in another language, im pretty sure it was.....asian!") to Owen Wilson's little part in the restaurant, which I thought was perfect.
I don't know anyone outside of the internet world that understands this movie at all. A lot of people think it's garbage and that it was a low point in Carrey's career. And I remember people/critics talking about how Liar Liar was a real return to form for him after he nearly ruined his career with this movie. Whatever though.
And I'd much rather watch this again than Eternal Sunshine, which is really just apples and oranges, anyway.

Yes, one of my all-time favorites as well, dude. Of course! I have liked it forever as well...I never understood why it got such a bad rap.
Just yesterday I left a message on my friend's answering machine saying nothing else but "ohhhh shit".

Yeah I can kick ass occasionally.
Besides, dude, Bob and David are in that shit!!!
I was watching an episode of Sex and the City recently, and one of the chicks was on a date with a guy that had hairplugs. I was like...hmm...that guy is really familiar. I realized it's the boss in Cable Guy...and like 8 years later...he's still the "guy with hairplugs" character. Sad.

I can't stand Jim Carrey. But Cable Guy, at least, was trying something interesting. I still didn't care for it, though.
I liked The Truman Show a lot, but the only really good performance I think Carrey's given is in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And, by good, I mean -- he was terrific in that. He still stinks of desperation, whatever he does, but at least this time it was channeled properly, and the film's a masterpiece.

Nice. By the way, Barb, I was going through my voicemails last night and came across a pretty racy message from you. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
a-z, come on, man. I figured if anyone would dig this movie, it would be you.:(

Ben Stiller is often overlooked as the director...
but he's got Cable Guy, Zoolander , and Reality Bites under his belt...

...I respect it, but, no, sorry. Carrey's desperation as an actor out-oozes his desperation as a character. It's pretty revolting.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think that that applies to his work in this film. He is not as overbearing as he usually is nor does he cross the line, which he usually does, to being a hyperactive douchebag.

Haha...what a show. In fact, Carrey in this gives one of the best comedy performances ive ever enjoyed. Definitely his best comedy role.
Sadly, the end credits feature some wank-off mid-90s rock piss similar to Nickelback.
So uhhhhh....he's the tardy one?
WELL MAYBE HE SHOULDN'T HAVE COME AT ALL..........JERK OFF!!!!!!!!

Dude, perfection takes time. Making a mix CD, for me is like a work of art. I'm like an ancient chinese rug maker who deliberately makes a mistake in his weaving. Perfection is held in the eyes of the creator. You'll know what I'm talkin about.
IT WILL COME.
