Do any of you ever have a beer or a cocktail at lunch on a work day? I've never done this before and feel like I might like to take myself out today and have a relaxing drink or two.

I'm not planning to get hammered, but I also don't know how much you have to drink before people can smell it on you or whatever.

My old boss used to go out drinking with me during lunch. If I was too drunk and/or wanted to go home, he would let me as long as I came out for more drinks later that night. This was at least once a week. Aaaaah the good ole days.

Now my new boss isn't into drinking on the job (but we leave early every now and then to go out drinking). But I go to the pub every now and then and have a liquid lunch. The only problems with it are coming back to work and having work to do. And wanting to take a smoke break every 10 minutes...which I end up doing. If you can handle it, and won't get fired for doing it....I say good on ya.

Pick up some gum for your breath.

I worked with a woman who would drink at lunch. She had a cubicle near the printer and just waiting at the printer, I could smell alcohol coming from her. Eventually, she started coming in in the mornings smelling badly of alcohol. It got to a point where you could tell, by smell, whether or not she was at her desk. She stopped working there after several months of that.

I would say that it's probably not worth the risk of doing that at lunch because to people who don't drink, it's often easy to smell alcohol. There are other reasons why maybe you don't want to do that--like with the stuff that you posted about in that other thread, maybe this isn't a good time to start with that...? (I'm sorry if that's a mean or insensitive thing to say.)

I used to work at a drive through. All of my coworkers were cool and we'd always step outside and burn one and then drink throughout our entire shift. Some of my buddies used to stop by for their beer run and I'd end up doing shots with them.

There's been many days that I didn't even remember how I got home after work.

Ah, that was years ago and as much as I'd like to drink now at work, I just can't do it. For one thing, I've never really had just one relaxing drink. If I do plan on drinking, it's only to get drunk and those days are only reserved for my days off. And I don't have any days off this week and I could sure use some drinks right about now.

Sometimes I have a pint of beer at lunch...but I only do it on days when my boss is out of the office for the afternoon.

Hmmmm, beers are probably less likely to smell than cocktails.

Not harsh, enree, its something to consider.

yeah see, Most of the time I work alone with the exception of when the boss is in. There's a 20 yr old girl who comes in three days a week and she could care less. We cover eachothers asses so she aint gonna rat me out for a beer at lunch.

i think beer stinks worse than cocktails. Get a few vodka drinks...have a smoke too if you do that., otherwise gum it up! Its Seattle, just say "at least i'm not cracked out" or maybe "it hurts my feelings that you judge me" and you should be fine.

Where I work, there are maybe 500 of us and a lot of people practically sit right on top of the person next to them. It's hard to have any privacy in a situation like that, plus students come and go a lot. Your situation sounds pretty cool. You should post about it in that other "What is your job doing for you" thread. :)

Not harsh, enree, its something to consider.I'm so glad to see that because I thought twice and three times before saying it. I hear of people who start to drink when they're stressed out--they maybe never drank before that--and it becomes a problem sometimes.

I don't know why that is about the smell of beer v. that of cocktails but it's probably true. I think the woman I worked with was into heavy stuff, not beer.

Hello, this is England. Pub lunch is not mandatory, but it's hardly exceptional. Why do you think these people need to stop and have tea two hours after lunch?

I line up tequila shots at my desk. If anyone pops in and sees them I just act natural and ask them work-related stuff to avoid any potential awkwardness

Before they had Warr's Harley on Kings Road I went to some Harley store in Nottingham to p/u a UK Harley T-Shirt for a friend of mine here in Seattle. It was afternoon and the clerk opened the top half of the dutch door entrance and said in proper english, we're currently closed for a spot of tea.

At a Fucking Harley Davidson store? Damn, I wish we could get that going on over here.

Does anyone have cardboard signs at freeway entrances that say "Will work for a spot of tea"

Well I may or may not have had 2 vodka tonics. And damn if ericlee wasn't right, I wanted another one. But I didn't go for it.

There's plenty of time after work for that. So I have my gum, and some strong smelling lotion. Here's hoping I don't get canned.

To really make it work for you, sneak in a flask and have some rum in your coke. Nothing like being fully lit up at the office....:D ....believe me I've done it more than once.

Back when I had oodles of stock options, I'd not only drink at lunch, but light cigars using $100 bills.

At times like this I always like to think "What would Hunter S. Thompson do in this situation?" And Whatever HST would do would be 10 times more outlandish and crazy than what I'm gonna do, so i figure I'm good. :D

hahhaa yes ^

the first time i drank on my break i felt paranoid, but i only had a pint of beer, plus cigarettes and mints so i guess nobody knew. i do it on occasion now and then, not a biggie i suppose. i dont work in an environment where even if anyone knew, nobody would bother to give a shit. its not like you are going back hammered, but its harder to go back sometimes.
