Tool

Even though ALOT of people consider their music and creepy ass fuckin' videos to be so goddamn fuckin' brilliant...the bastards don't deserve all the constant praise they get and have gotten for so many years.

I prefer GOOD bands like NIN, Sisters Of Mercy, Skinny Puppy who are actually LISTENABLE in my honest opinion. (y)

So what band(s) do you despise and you consider "OVERRATED" that get so much attention from the masses ?

Coldplay

This could be correct, I don't even begin to understand Coldplay. Didn't Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers do the same sort of thing except a zillion trillion million times better? With way less bullshit.

With almost evey song I hear on the radio nowadays I just roll my eyes and grab the MP3 player. Seems like I'm constantly pushing the car radio pre-select buttons getting CRAP! This has got to be one of the biggest eras of overrated bullshit ever. I think it's because the RIAA is so fucked up they forgot about quality.

There is some great things happening but a person has to really search it out.

You couldn't really call a band like U2 a clone of Coldplay. I don't even like U2, but you've got to give them their due. Coldplay is just bland, generic 'Big Thing' music.

To me, they represent the same thing though - big, bland and boring....I find them both equally uninspiring and dull.

And Coldplay hasn't done in 3 albums what U2 did with the first half of the 80's.

For me, a particularly overrated band is Jet. But that's pretty obvious.

Elvis Presley

In the EARLY YEARS during the Sun Records era (yes) he had the good looks and cool image that drove the gals crazy along with the unmatchable voice...back then in the golden age of 1950's Rock N' Roll.

But...

He could just barely play a guitar and only wore one during his performances as a "decoration ornament" to look at.

Couldn't act wet in a rain storm as a movie actor !

Relied on black talent back up singers as much as possible to add soul to his material.

After he went Vegas style wearing those gawdy ass white, excessive high collar jumpsuits covered with all the rhinestones and the big gold medallions, he became the tackiest looking motherfucker on the planet.

And if he were still alive today, he would most likely be just another washed up, broke ass, has been with his own reality VH1 show and playing at whatever Holiday Inn lounges that would book his fat ass.

to me he represented the predjudice and bigotry of some americans in the 50s. he was a white musician but played music in the style of black musicians - so white people wouldn't have to listen to black musicians.

Haha! My mum and Step-Dad are huge Eagles fans. She's 59 and he's 52. Once, they stood in the rain at an outdoor concert in 1995 just to be able to see The Eagles play.

Their favourite Eagle is Don Henley, hands down, and they also enjoy 'Life in the Fast Lane', and 'Pretty Maids all in a Row'.

What I dont agree with was the tool who said talking heads (n) I mean seriously, if they are overrated what does that make new order, depeche mode, duran duran, the cure and countless other 80s bands which I would argue are of a similar significance, yet have far more fame.

Nirvana was a pretty smart unit. The fact that Kurt Cobain blew his brains out 12 years ago, almost to the to the day (april 5, 1994) and people still listen, buy, speculate, pontificate, overrate, underrate, comiserate hasn't stopped anyone I know from getting that rush when all of a sudden out of the doldrums of the fagged out music scene we have today you hear,

Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us

Probably many of you shouldn't have cared about Nirvana as much as you did, because Nirvana made it clear they didn't care about you. It was a fans band.

As far as the Eagles go....Joe Walsh is my favorite Eagle.

I go to parties, sometimes until four
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door
It's tough to handle this fortune and fame
Everybody's so different, I haven't changed

This thread seems to be a discussion about bands who were very influential at a certain point and then never carried it to next level for whatever reason. Nirvana arent overrated - sure , the one album sticks out like a sore thumb coz it changed loads but you cant over rate what they did for rock music. One album is all it takes - just ask the Stone Roses.

Right then, my comment seems to have upset a few people. All i was trying to say was that a lot of people are of the opinion that Talking Heads are this really innovative, fantastic band and its not an opinion i share, everyone i know who likes them is really over the top about them.
I just think that they werent as groundbreakin as some people make out. Sure, they got to grips with the groove and tried to make a style of their own but i think some of their output was average and sounded like lots of other groups or at least didnt distinguish them from a lot of other 80's bands.

...I'd say that Michael Jackson's rep is more tainted than underrated. He had a handful of singles that were sheer genius, and he was a good enougher singer to make even stupid filler bullshit sound pretty good. I'm not crazy about some of the production on his records -- it's a little too studio-cheesey at times. But the main thing is he just flew off on his own particularly bizarre journey.

But, like Orson says, "You only need one [great work]" to make it into the cannon, and between the Jackson Five stuff and probably about a dozen singles, he's in.

Dude, the use of the n word is bit of a weird one to me ( i am white) but you are better off not using it. My uneducated understanding of black people using it is to make a mockery of it and to try and diminish its meaning as an abusive term .
If i have got this wrong or just said something incredibly wrong or racist I am sorry but I am trying to make a point of which I dont understand the full facts, admittedly I should prolly stay out of this argument but I feel that someone saying its ok to use it because Kanye West does is wrong, so I feel I have to say something. I agree, they aren't as influential as some would have you believe, and they have put out alot of crapiola, but they are nonetheless underrated. Even if you take their biggest 4-5 singles on their own without even looking at their other songs, they dont get enough credit. A few of my best friends are black and I only use the "n word" around them because we have been so tight for years. And if you think that I throw that word out around just anyone, then you just have a very strong misconception about me all together. The majority of girlfriends/ friends in highschool were black as well as ones that have lived with me over the years. So - I'm definitely NOT a racist and do find the n-word offensive and as a sign of ignorance. I only threw it out concerning Kanye West, not just because he has used it in one popular "explicit version" song - as many black artists have/still do, but because even my black friends make fun of him saying, "He's just a fatty face no talent nigger is all...and nothing more." I really DO have much respect for blacks and admire their many talents, including comedian Jamie Foxx as one of my fav. individuals ever and as my avatar - and not as a cruel joke. (lb)

I never said you were a racist, that was never the issue. Ok so your used to using the word with your friends and people you have known a long time, thats cool but you must admit you have to expect some sort of reaction if your using it on a message board where you dont know everyone, all i was trying to say that maybe on this board you should exercise a bit of caution when using it.

Personally, I dont totally hate them, so obviously they werent the first overrated band that came to mind. But yeah, very overrated nonetheless.

I agree, they aren't as influential as some would have you believe, and they have put out alot of crapiola, but they are nonetheless underrated. Even if you take their biggest 4-5 singles on their own without even looking at their other songs, they dont get enough credit. If I asked someone my age "who wrote burning down the house?", most would say Tom Jones and the girl from the Cardigans :(

Erm.. I actually like that version of burnin down the house:o but I really think that Tom Jones is the only man alive who can sing the phone book and get away with it.

As for the Arctic Monkeys, I think they've made a really good album that sounds like a lot of great britsih rock music from the past. There's a lot of promise there and they now have to fulfill that potential. I think they are being over rated because they have produced something good and now expectations for the future are very high. I hope they do get better but can understand why some people think its all hype.

Didn't say I hated the tom jones/cardigans girl version. Just that its a shame people dont know the original as well.

You're so right, and I do apologize for my ignorance to everyone here. I never should've resorted to using it, like you said...I'm very sorry. :o

U2 blows ! Hate em..hate em..hate em.....

The Police as well - what an awful name for a band ! But they have many fans still as the singer with the bumble-bee sweater who in turn donned the nickname for his solo artist career.

U2 are not over rated - loads of people like them and have done for a long time - they have earned the right to be one of the biggest bands ever. Sure, not everything they have done is great but they have managed to sell lots of records for over 25 years and develop their sound to keep it resonably contemporary. You'll be saying the Stones are over rated next.

Oh and the Police were good - lots of really good singles. As for the name no its not great but i thought this was about over rated bands not names - I dont think the Beastie boys is a great name for a start.

my favourite topic. Madonna- the only praise she deserves is from back in 86-87' when she refused to have the beasties kicked from her tour, otherwise she should have been kicked down a well as soon as american life came out. There are many others; coldplay, U2 (Despite thier work for charity), radiohead, any UK dance tunes (scouse house? give me a cake). oh and james blunt.

wow

no fuckin way man....you look at it like this. Do people still listen to their music 20 -30 years later?

yeah , they made classic shit. Own sound and Jim Morrison was WAY before his time.

(y)

...people listen to all kinds of crap 20-30 years later or more. The Doors, the Grateful Dead, Paul Anka, Pat Boone, fucking POISON has a greatest hits album out.

Longevity alone means nothing. The Doors are crap, except for about three songs.

A lot of musicians/artists/philosophers etc who have been viewed as brilliant by some have had such comments mabe about them by others.
There's a fine line between brilliance and madness and at the end of the day a lot of it's just down to personal opinion I guess

Pete Docherty is becoming one of these such people.........I'll keep my opinion to myself but only because I haven't heard enough of his music to make an educated decision.
