NYC to host hip hop honors week prior to VH1 awards show
By NAHAL TOOSI
Associated Press Writer
March 30, 2006, 2:42 PM EST
NEW YORK -- A six-day celebration of hip-hop culture, held in the birthplace of the musical genre, was set for October in conjunction with the 3rd annual VH1 Hip-Hop Honors show, network and city officials announced Thursday.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg _ or "Mike B," as he tagged himself for the day _ announced the festivities while flanked by two hip-hop legends, entrepreneur Russell Simmons and artist and actor Ice-T.
Bloomberg said it's important for the city to honor musical traditions.
"That means celebrating an art form that has expressed the realities of city life," Bloomberg said after welcoming visitors to his "crib," City Hall. "As hip-hop has evolved and new artists have emerged, its lessons have continued to be valuable for us."
The events and promotions between Oct. 12 through Oct. 17 will include hip-hop artists visiting with children in city schools, special discounts offered at participating restaurants, performances at clubs throughout the city, and fashion- and sports-related events.
The honors show itself will be taped on Oct. 7 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in midtown Manhattan but broadcast on Oct. 17. This year's honorees include Simmons, MC Lyte, the Beastie Boys, the Wu-Tang Clan, Afrika Bambaataa, Rakim and Easy-E, officials announced.
Ice-T, a rapper who plays a detective on TV's "Law & Order: SVU," will host the show.
New York has been the home of the awards, which highlight the achievements of the genre's pioneers, for the show's first two years.
VH1 general manager Tom Calderone said other major markets had tried to get the show this year, but that the discussions didn't go very far.
In their comments, Ice-T and Simmons stressed the educational value of hip-hop and said its artists often spoke the truth, even if it wasn't pretty. The two said they were happy to have the mayor's backing.
"My people said, 'Bloomberg's cool, man,"' Ice-T said.

Yeah it's gotta be a LTI track. I mean, if they're honoring them for being pioneers... why not go way back to the pioneering days?

Well, Public Enemy performed in 2004 when they were honored, and Big Daddy Kane performed in 2005 when he was honored, so I hope the Beasties get to perform this year.
I have no idea whose going to do the cover of a Beastie Boys song though. I would think they would like to use three white rappers, but there's not alot to choose from. My guess is that they use Eminem, Kid Rock, and that rapper from 311. Or maybe the singer from the Bloodhound Gang? He's said that the Beastie Boys were a big influence on him. And I do think they're going to cover "Fight For Your Right". I'll be shock if they cover something else.
This is a great list of honorees. Beastie Boys. Rakim. Wu-Tang Clan. I love it.
One question though: why is Easy E going in by himself and not with N.W.A.?

My thought is this, Easy E died in '95 and every year they honor someone who has died. First it was BIG E then it was Tupac, so now it is Easy E. Plus if they honor all of N.W.A. then you would knock out Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. And I would think they would save them for future shows.

I was there and it was insane. Beastie Boys were first to be honored. After the intro video, Fab, Tip and Diddy(!) came out and sang the first verse of Paul Revere and Hold It Now Hit It.Then, the boys came out and sang So Watcha Want. AdRocks mic was messed up so they had to start it over after being almost done. The whole night was amazing. Among, the posters they gave away in the VH1 cannisters, there's a great Beastie Boys one.
Africa Bambatta was cool and I noticed Mike D and Russel Simmons having some long conversations during the proceedings. I sat next to one of the oldest school female rap groups known as the Mercedes Ladies. All in all, an amazing night and it was an honor to attend.

Rap royalty rocks
VH1 show gives it up for our legend MCs
BY CRISTINA KINON and JONATHAN LEMIRE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS
Lil' Kim in her first post-prison performance, at the VH1 Hip-Hop Awards at the Hammerstein Ballroom last night.
Pioneering rapper MC Lyte was given a special tribute.
In a lively tribute that featured superstar duets, loads of bling and Lil' Kim's first performance since her release from prison, rap royalty was honored last night at the Hammerstein Ballroom.
VH1's third annual Hip Hop Awards celebrated eight of the genre's heaviest hitters, including the Beastie Boys, Ice Cube, Wu-Tang Clan, Rakim, Eazy-E and Def Jam Records co-founder Russell Simmons.
"These are the guys that I listened to as a kid," said Bronx-born rapper Fat Joe, who shook off the playoff elimination of his beloved Yankees earlier in the day to attend the midtown ceremony, which will air Oct. 17. "Today is the most fun time out of the whole year."
The honorees, who sat together on a stage above the crowd, basked in the tributes of the other artists in attendance, who joined forces to cover some of the legends' classic jams.
"There are a lot of pioneers out there that need to be recognized for their work and contributions in music," said Pepa, of Salt-N-Pepa, on the red carpet.
A tribute to Brooklyn-born MC Lyte, whom many consider the first noteworthy female rapper, was to feature Lil' Kim, who made a brief appearance on the red carpet on W. 34th St.
The arrivals featured dozens of artists and gazillions in bling, as well as a mock entrance to a subway station - part of the show's tribute to New York City, the birthplace of rap.
"New York is the foundation of hip hop, and it's just getting bigger and better," said rapper Da Brat. "And I'm very happy to be a part of it."
The show's host, Ice-T, also paid tribute to the city and, in a preshow video, jokingly suggested that Mayor Bloomberg was the second choice to oversee the event.
For many in attendance, the highlight was the city's own Beastie Boys, who jumped onstage to play their classic "So What'cha Want" - only to have to start over after their microphones died.
Near the end of the event, there was a brief altercation between Wu-Tang Clan's entourage and the security staff after one of the group's posse was spotted without a proper backstage credential. One person was slapped, and a few others were ejected, but no serious injuries were reported.

we were watching the screening live at Providence when they had to start over...
it was a bit embarrasing...adrock and Yauch's mics werent working and there was mass confusion on the stage...
after the first take, horovitz said something along the lines of "there are no do-overs" and Diamond said "Its Game Time"
it was clear they were annoyed at the situation and the crowd was booing the sound/crew people...
so they just did SWW again, and then they went into its the new style...
pootytang and laver1969 got in while some of us were at the screening...
everyone came out after the show and right before MMM took over the DJ Booth, they played a 30 minute long Beastie medley, from one classic hit to another... our little section of message board fans were in heaven...
me and steve-on0point were trading root down lyrics while everyone danced around our table... all in all, it ws a fun night, but everyone had to keep trading their passes around so everyone had access to the VIP areas...

I most definately had a fairytale week in New York.
It began with the most intimate Beastie Boy concert that I've ever been to. Front row and so close I could see up their noses. Getting an autographed setlist after the show was the best "Welcome to New York" present that I could have ever recieved. Running across Adrock on the streets of Manhattan was doper than dope. Hip Hop honors was fantastic and the afterparty was slammin'.
The MB'ers that showed were all cool as hell. I don't think I met any that I didn't like. Bionic and YoungRemy made great tour guides and even better friends. You guys have a place to crash anytime you come to Louisiana.
I could go on and on about all the cool stuff that happened in NYC but I guess somethings are just ment to simmer in the mind.
Last but not least, thank you Mr. Cey Adams for taking time out of your busy schedule to hang with some of the Beastie Boy MB members. It meant the world to me and I think to the others as well. Also thank you for the hook. I got alot of love and respect for you, man.

:D
I think the tribute performance by Diddy, Q-tip, and Fabolous with Mix Master Mike was a bit weak. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't bad. Mix Master Mike was tight. Tip was good, especially with his Adrock impression, but the performance seemed under-rehearsed. They seemed not to know where to stand and what to do.
I found it interesting how they stayed on the opposite side of the stage, away from the Beastie Boys, as they performed the tribute. Perhaps they were a little intimidated? I think if I were in their shoes, I would feel that way.
FYI: The process for the tribute performances is VH1 asks the honorees whom they would like to perform the tribute. VH1 then contacts those artists to see if they will do the tribute. In other words, Diddy, Q-tip, and Fabolous were among the artists the Beastie Boys requested to perform the tribute.
Girl's got video of the Hip Hop Honors. I sort of feel like I should keep the video private until the show airs, but I also know that y'all want to see it now. My video is not going to hurt VH1. It's not that good.
Plus, I hear someone is trying to sell video to those who can't wait for the broadcast. Don't let anyone profit from your fandom. We fans can provide for one another without financial reward.
Mix Master Mike Intro / Q-tip, Fabolous, and Diddy tribute to the Beastie Boys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwLkBYsslmE)
I uploaded a clip of the do-over performance of "So What'cha Want/The New Style." It includes footage of Pooty and Laver rockin' out to the performance and the tribute performers coming out on stage to congratulate the Beastie Boys.
So What'cha Want/The New Style (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLF3k7qZsN8)
(Sorry about the quality after compression. It was a huge file.)
I loved that Beastie Boys did "So What'cha Want" and "The New Style" back-to-back. That's a spicy meatball with sauce!
*makes kissy, Italian gesture*
I enjoyed the Hip Hop Honors immensely. I felt bad that not all of the BBMBers that were there made it inside. It was difficult to enjoy the show thinking of those people.

^^This got me thinking. So that means that Run DMC asked the Beasties to perform for their tribute two years ago. (y)

wow what a surprise
on another note, i hope the boys didn't piss off/disrespect DMC by not asking him to come on in the tribute to the boys. I thought it woulda been a given that they woulda requested DMC to perform in the HHH honours tribute to the boys. But maybe they just had scheduling problems or something
thanks for posting the vids Miramanee!(y)

Someone asked me to post video of the first version of "So What'cha Want" when the mics cut.
