Starting as a cabinboy on a steamboat, Henry Plant created the first major transportation system in the southeast, and operated a chain of luxury hotels that made the West Coast of Florida a tourist mecca. By 1886, on his railroad that became the Atlantic Coast Line, you could ride from New York to Tampa without changing cars.

In 1891 Plant opened the fabulous Tampa Bay Hotel, a monument to Gilded Age excess, which is today the main building of the University of Tampa and home to the Henry B. Plant Museum. His elegant Belleview Hotel of 1897,
"The Great White Lady of the Gulf" in Clearwater, is still open today, offering year-round luxury resort facilities.

Kelly ***** portrayed Henry Plant at the Bellview's year-long centennial celebration in 1996. With his one-man show "Henry Plant-Live!" he has appeared at schools, libraries, banquets, and community festivals in Ohio, Georgia, and South Carolina—and throughout Florida, sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council.

The Florida History Society will soon publish ******'s biography of Henry Plant, the result of research at local history societies from New Haven to Key West since 1992.
