I can't open My Documents anymore, it just closes straight away, or closes the program which is trying to open it. MSN Messenger is very tempremental, I've got porn dial-up pop ups which I can't get rid of as well. My spyware/virus program doesn't run now.

Fuck, I feel a format coming on. But how can I back up My Documents?

well you can get to the folder by going to c:\documents and settings\username\my documents

try that maybe

or when you get into the username folder, right click My Documents, choose copy and then just paste it somewhere else

Just bite the bullet and format. When you're back up make sure you have the following in place before you venture out into internet land :

Firewall.........hardware(router) and/or software(Trend Micro/McAfee etc. etc)
Antivirus.......McAfee/Panda/Trend Micro/Norton etc etc
AntiSpyware..SpySweeper/SpyDoctor/Ad-Aware/Spybot/etc etc...

Scan for viruses at least once a week and for spyware at least 3 times a week. If you find that your anti-spyware isn't picking up shit go HERE (http://www.hijackthis.de) for a second opinion.

You could try and fix the problem but it sounds like whatever may have infected your computer has dug itself in. The best thing you a can do is be proactive with your AV and AS program updates and scans and try to limit your internet use i.e turning of the computer when not using it and trying to refrain from filesharing via Limewire/Beashare/etc in order to get anything other than music or videos...

I have done a few informal tests using limewire and I have found that more than not, archives are modified to include 'surprises' for unsuspecting downloaders of programs. If you're going to participate in this sort of downloading in the very least scan the archives first before opening them

If you you have Windows XP you can always try the system restore option on your cuntrol panel.

I would try diskeeper, or at least a manual defrag.

Diskeeper would most likely help in this situation. You won't need to format.
