Is it just me or does Kelsey Grammer already look like The Beast without any makeup?

...so what'd people think?

I thought it was passable. It was kind of overstuffed and underdone at the same time -- odd. There were a couple of groaners, dialogue-wise (Magneto has an embarassing "Now we conquer the WORLD!!!" sort of speech), and some inexplicable stuff -- resurrected character(s), powers-taken-away-but-not-really! -- which kind of drive me nuts. It's like with the time travel crap in that third Harry Potter movie -- I mean, if there ARE no rules or consequences in that universe, then danger and suspense are pretty much pffft. (Also a weird moment in continuity where we go from afternoon to nighttime in .3 seconds. )

Still, it was just about worth matinee money.

B-.

Why the fuck were characters gettin bounced left and right? Where the fuck was nightcrawler? Why did Ice-man wait til his gay Pyro face-off to turn into solid ice? WHERE THE FUCK IS GAMBIT!?!?!!!?!

decent, but definitely pissed me off at points like the lack of character development with new/newer cast members.

Happily, I'm not familiar with the comic, so some of that stuff didn't bother me.

Nightcrawler was definitely one of the better characters, though.

Did you notice how, when a couple of good guys got dispatched, it didn't really hurt like it should have? I mean, think of how the heart sank when Obi-Wan bit it in the original Star Wars.... and we'd only known him for about an hour, not two movies plus.

...some of that stuff seemed right, actually. Like -- pointy wood spear throwing guy. He's an enemy very suddenly encountered -- I didn't need to know shit. That scene was well done; we sort of found out what we needed to know while Wolverine found out who was attacking him.

yeh this was an interesting film, of course its not going to be like a cartoon or as indepth as a comic series but it gave a whole new twist to the Pheonix and the Mctaggart storyline.

Jimmy was the guy's son in Thank You for Smoking.

I agree, really no need for that, but Colossus was in the second and third and might as well been absent in both. Kitty Pryde coulda had a little background given, too.

Kitty Pryde -- I think I "got" her, more or less. I'm still pretty fuzzy about Colossus, except he's big. And did he go metal? Yeah -- I really have no idea what that was about.

Another strike: the wire work was really, really awful. The people clearly had no propulsion or weight or anything. Those moments were pretty bad -- much closer to Mary Poppins than anything. (n)

I know little if anything about the series (either as previous movies or as comics). Despite that, though, I was able to follow the plot of this one reasonably well. It was fairly self-explanatory/self-contained. I thought the effects and acting were good, the plot was fine. It was enjoyable. I wouldn't see it again, though, but that's just because this genre doesn't particularly appeal to me.

Some of the people watching the movie were ecstatic about the mere thoughts of being so Big Screen X-Men. Waiting for it to start, you could tell, was excruciatingly painful for them. And once it started, their ecstasy levels spiked loudly and noticeably; they had absolutely no qualms about emoting like that. So that wasn't so bad for me because I was kind of intrigued by them and their enthusiasm, but there were these women--four or so of them--and they were in their 60s (?) and they kept SHHHHHing the enthusiasts. It grew from SHHHHHHings to angry SHHHHHings to "Quiet!" to "Quiet Please!" to "Do I have to call the manager?" That was odd and in fact, they interfered with the movie more so than the enthusiasts did. I wasn't much in the mood to confront them--they were that close to being part of that Red Hat Society, I could just feel it and I wasn't up for it or them.

I LOVED Lovedlovedlovedlovedloved
Olivia Williams as Moira Mctaggart. She was so great as Ms. Cross in Rushmore. She looks hotter than ever! I've been a huge x-men fan every since the animated series came out. Willams as Moira is like a dream come true!

I'd hit it

i had blown up expectations of the movie, so i didn't enjoy it as much as i had hoped i would. it was okay but not as good as the other 2. they probably should have waited for director whatshisname to get done with superman instead of passing it off. plus the theatre air conditioning was broken or someshit and it was like 80 degrees with 200 people in there - bloody disgusting.

did you wait till the credits were over and watch the little teaser at the end?

I didn't. I have an idea what it was, and it's the sort of thing that bugs me, and I was kind of tired of the movie by that point anyway.

Did you? If so, did you like it?

yeah i saw it. i dunno how all these nerds knew about it, but the whole theatre stayed, and my husband knew to wait for it (but he usually makes me sit through all that crap anyway). anyway, it was ok, but by that point i didn't really care if there was another one because i wasn't that impressed with this one. i should know better than to go to the theatre with over inflated expectations. plus it was really hot and stinky and i just wanted to get out of there. :)

I know that Ain't It Cool News had publicized the after-credits scene; I'm sure that other nerds sites knew it, too.
