It's funny, but I was thinking the other day that it's one of those movies that I hated when it came out and I still can't understand what in the heck people liked about it. I also never liked the sketch on SNL, and I was probably too young to get the joke (I just kept wishing they would have on a GOOD band :)), so maybe I just had a bad attitude about it.

I probably have too much baggage. I couldn't just watch it casually.
To me, it represents so many of the bad things that happened to movies as we left the 70s -- featuring TV stars instead of actors, with the movie depending on how much you like the actor instead of character, big action sequences that are completely pointless and boring, cameos for no reason, etc. I enjoyed parts of Private Benjamin, Stripes, Ghostbusters, etc., and there are some really good lines, but they all have major flaws that make them just average comedies.
I will say this though, the next rounds of SNL movies were much, much worse.

haha, funny we should post that so close to the same time
the cameos had a reason, they werent pointless. the movie is all about music, all the cameos were great musicians doing great songs that they made famous. the music is what makes it... well that and the funny, but if they didnt have those cameos, you just coudlnt have the music like that. cab calloway, aretha franklin, john lee hooker, ray charles... i could live without the james brown, but meh, whatever. the fact is, blues brothers is a musical, and it woudlnt be the same to have some random lady burst into "think" in aretha's place. praise for the musicians aside, i think the guys are pretty good too. when they play that song everybody needs somebody to love, thats my favorite song from the movie.
the movie is very long, i could never sit through the whole thing when i was little. now though, love it.

Stripes and Ghostbusters do not have flaws
Just the last quarter of each movie.
Private Benjamin has the same problem. It's difficult to end a comedy I guess. Silver Streak and Stir Crazy are also about 1/4 shit.
