my car was recently broken into and all my cds are lost. Since I owned all of your albums previously, I will not be re-purchasing them and instead simply downloading them from various free services online. As a silent protest against compact discs and the cost of albums, I am never purchasing another one as I lost several thousands of dollars worth of music. I hope this does not offend or upset you or cause you to lose any sleep because sleep is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Why the Helen of Troy were you keeping your cd-collection in your car?
Why didn't you burn them on new cd's and keep them in the car (if you needed to keep that much music there at the same time, or are you living in your car?)

Exactly. I always make copies and leave the originals at home, in a safe place. when the cds get scraped up or ruined, i simply go home and make another copy, good as new.

so if they hear thru the grapevine that Im stealing their music online they know its justified because at one time or another I did purchase their albums.I wonder if this pertains to vinyl too. If you owned every, say, Doors album in vinyl, is it okay to download those albums in other formats?
I'm not challenging you--it sounds like it, but I'm not. I'm curious about this. My one friend does this--downloads stuff for free--and he justifies it by saying that he paid for the vinyl or a casette years ago, so he's entitled to download his collection in other formats.
I'm not sure that his justification is sound.
I could maybe see if he bought the CDs and lost them or, in your case, they were stolen, but I can't quite see doing what he's doing--downloading stuff to keep current with technology.

A friend's house and car were robbed and they took his somewhat-substantion collection of movies and music. All of it was reimbursed through his homeowners & car insurance, but my friend bemoaned having lost his entire music collection. Some of the pieces in that collection were obscure, rare.
The sweet thing: they caught the guy who stole the stuff because he tried to sell the (obscure/rare) CDs at a trader shop. I guess the police publish lists of stolen music to shops and the owners of those shops consult with the lists before making a swap.

The Notorious LOL is LYING! He told me personally that he hates Adam, Adam, and Mike, and doesn't want to pay for their crap music anymore, even though he wants to listen to it.
You all really need to bombard him with PMs about why this is wrong.
Please title your PM with your measurements.
Thank youuuu

Do the police publish lists of music thieves, too?

Music by artists you like should be paid for. I buy music as much as I can. As for when I download it's when the music is either unattainable, or I'm just checking out something I'm not confident enough to buy. But sorry, I could never feel right about loving a song by a band that I've not spent money on. I think it's only fair.

I have spent money on their cds though. I just feel that due to circumstances I shouldnt be expected to re-purchase them, so Im not going to. However, I also do not want the Beastie Boys to lose sleep, because sleep is important.

dude, this thread is so 1999. "I'm gonna download and steal music." wow, you're gangster. Although I am sorry for your loss, I bet most of those CD's you haven't listened to in years. Attachment to material items leads to suffering. Some protest, you're the fuckin' Martin Luther King of the music world. Should we all start singing "We Shall Overcome"?
So, you're next question is "ok, wiseass, like you have never downloaded music?" well, yeah I have, but here is my view on it. 1. I will always buy the beastie boys music. never download (except for remixes and live shows). why? well, first of all I want to give them my money, I want the records to sell, It validates the time and effort that they put into the music. we have a deal with them: they make the music for us to enjoy, and for their efforts, we pay them for it; this deal goes back hundreds of years. If no one buys the records, then they will stop making them. secondly, I want them to be as sucessful as possible, and stick it to all of the crappy bands that don't deserve to make music, let alone be rich (eg. 99% of all the bands/rappers/slutty, over-produced bimbos that can never perform live because their whole careers revolve around a little device called a harmonizer and overproduction.
2. If I do download music, it will never be from a new band, since most of them suck (see above rant). It seems that if a bands is worth my time, I want them to be sucessful too, (Remy Shand, DJ Green Lantern, The Bump Foundation, etc.) these bands/musicians need support in the face of all the crap that is out there today (Goatee Metal Rap, California Punk-Pop). So I will buy their albums. Also, I do download a lot of older stuff (70's Soul, Funk). The way I see that is they have made their cash, and the rights to the songs are owned by a publishing company (usually) and the performers don't see much of that money, so I'll be damned if I will give money to a theif (the aforementioned publishing company)
If you want to protest something, protest all the crap music out there today and buy good music. Then and only then, can we move out of this cess pool that is modern music today. There are too many bands out there who need our support, since they get very little from record companies or the media. Don't be a cheapskate, support the art, or we will end up with nothing but fuckin' Blink-182 clones, overproduced Jennifer Lopezes, and Emo, 24-7-365.
P.S. Go to Best Buy. They have sales. not many CD's over $15. You can't say that prices are still too high. I paid $8.99 for the Cassette of LTI in '86. I was 8 years old. Fuckin' Cheapskate.

I don't think it's a valid justification, but it has definitely passed through my head. I don't download music, but I have borrowed a few CDs from a friend because I have the albums on vinyl and Pink Floyd doesn't need any more of my money!!!

Believe me, I understand it. I have a house full of the things I love. Sometimes three copies. But should I really have to repurchase Meddle when I'm still in physical possession of a working copy of the vinyl?
And I have a HUGE problem with beautiful books.

^I do too. But if it's just one song that I like just for a beat or something, and I know I won't like the whole album, then I'll download just the 1 song. And unfortunatly I'm poor, and like music too much and can't afford it. So...I steal it. MUAHAHAHA! :(

ok, ok,
maybe I was a little harsh, but what the hell, sometimes it just flows. download, don't download, who the fuck cares. just listen to good music, not the bullshit that is out there today. I apologize, being ripped off sucks, especially when it decimates your cd collection.
