there was this girl who i knew back in high school who had this flowerchild, free-flowing, skirt-waving kinda personality and the way she talked sounded like something out of a 60s california skating movie. but this was in ny and she had grown up there. i always wanted scare or startle her to see if she'd react out of character or i just wanted to say 'aaaawwwww come on!' and see if she'd snap out of it
have you ever known someone like that?

yeah, i see people like that all the time.
so much so, that it is quite refreshing when you meet someone who is very genuine

At my school there's a lot of kids that try to act gangster, it's starting to get rediculous.

only if they're genuinely interesting.
i'm genuine. i genuinely hate everyone. i come here to act. DOES THAT FUCKING REFRESH YOU

i mean people who really live and breathe a chactacter. this girl was always wafting around like she was pippi longstocking on shrooms but she NEVER did drugs. didnt even smoke cigarettes. she was a straight a student and was one of the singers/guitarists in this unbelievable band. she lived the character from the time i met her when we were 14 and before. i think she went on to study biochemistry

My roommate's girlfriend constantly puts on this little cutesy act, like she's some precious little princess or some shit, and it's the most annoying thing in the entire world. Her true colours show up now and then when she's angry or hasn't had a smoke in a while. Then she's just kind of bitchy.

i actually found this girl to be one of the most endearing people ive ever met. i just wasnt sure if it was real. it seemed too good to be true

thats a problem with being really nice sometimes. which is almost kind of sad.
but i guess its only natural to question it, thats how con men make their ends.

I know this girl who I thought was either british or irish, but it turns out that she just lived in Ireland for like 2 years in her 20's, but uses an accent that drops out every now and again and basically presents herself as Irish. that's why some of my friends stopped talking to her. she's actually from upstate new york.
sucks because she was pretty nice and seemed cool. oh well.

Isn't that what being a teenager is all about though, trying on different personalities and working out who you are in the world? How can you 'be yourself' and 'be genuine' if you don't know who 'yourself' is and what it means to be 'genuine', because it's the first time in your life when you've actually thought about defining these things? It's like trying on clothes in a shop - you pick out a few pieces, try them on in different combinations, see what suits you and what doesn't. Some you keep, some you send back to the racks.

The neighborhood where I live is in an artsy district and a lot of the teens there are the kids of grown-up or reformed 60s hippies/liberals. The kids hang out in the bookstores, restaurants, coffee shops and they're mostly art and philosophy majors in the making and they're trying so hard. Which usually means that they see nearly everything in a negative light, even if they know nothing about the thing they're hating or mocking.
It's nothing new--everyone's done it like ms.peachy said--maybe it's just that we have more access now.
When it's weird is when people keep doing that stuff into their 20s and 30s. Or, worse yet, when they only start to do it in their 40s and 50s.

i agree heiress and i don't really have anything against her personality. im just intrigued with it. and she seems to have tried this one on and stuck with it because she's still the same way. i knew this white guy who talked like chris rock in his routines all the time... ALL the time, as in i never knew his real personality - same thing... he was definately a put on and it was a similar situation except i knew this guy didnt grow up talking like that.

i only mention the hippy aspect of her to illlustrate, not as a negative thing about her. i dunno. like i always wondered it she stubbed her toe or something like that if her 'real' self would come out.

my mom used to work with this lady who was so upbeat that she'd get a headache and be like, *grinning* "oh man, I've got the worst headache today! ha ha ha!"
