Africa Talks To You kinda drags on a bit long, but yeah, it was a pretty untouchable album for its time, no doubt.

Also:

I know that this is the hip album to like, but I really kinda prefer Stand!. Sing A Simple Song, Everyday People and You Can Make It If You Try are all really well-known tracks, which kinda dilutes the merits of the album in terms of it being recognized as a cohesive LP, rather than just another 'best of' compilation. The real reason I prefer Stand!, though, is because I Want to Take You Higher isn't on Riot. Plus, despite the fact that Riot is supposed to be the dark protest album, it doesn't have one song title that's anywhere as in your face as Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey. Now that's how you protest.

Stand! is just too happy for me. I wouldn't say There's Riot Going On is a protest album, it's perhaps social commentary. For me it's primarily the sound of a genius slowly decaying into addiction. It's full of despair, so dense and resigned, but so funky.

Fresh has always been one of my favourites for the cover alone, that leather suit is too fly. In time could be my all time opening track on an album i love that intro.

But i'd agree with you both riot and stand both have their merits. I love the overly positive attitude on stand, bordering on tree hugging hippie crap of course but always makes me smile. The ending of stand always makes Al get his funk on

I always find my self going back to the Greatest Hits album.

For me it doesn't get any better than "Hot Fun in the Summertime"

Riot's my favorite, then Stand.

Can you imagine what a fucking downer Riot must've been like when it first came out? I can imagine Sly fans thinking, even with that title, that "Ooh! Another fun new Family Stone record!"

Yow.

I wish the CD had the flag cover, though. It's a shame that that cover's kind of gotten lost.

They put the concert shot on the cover. It looks pretty cheap, actually.

They were probably trying to make it look uplifting or something. (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc000/c056/c05687rnvrk.jpg)

But the way they package it, it just looks like such a cheesey reissue.

Jeez -- at least let the picture take up the full cover, you know?

Well, isn't it a reissue?

The vinyl reissue has the full cover picture.

Right on -- they're finally cleaning up the good stuff. March 20. (y)

From All Music Guide:

Sly & the Family Stone
About ten years ago Epic/Legacy initiated a Sly & the Family Stone reissue campaign that went no further than the first three albums, never getting around to Stand! or There's a Riot Goin' On or Fresh -- which was kind of like a Beatles reissue campaign that overlooked Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, and the white album. Thankfully, this spring Legacy finally launches another Sly reissue program, this one encompassing all the albums from A Whole New Thing to Small Talk, which has never hit CD in the States, and they're all remastered with additional bonus tracks. This is a long overdue set of reissues -- and now that they're finally coming out, that leaves just the catalogs of Bruce Springsteen and the Beatles on my wish list of reissues.
