....so, a search for "Can" doesn't work. I apologize if there's been a "Can" thread.
-- any fans out there? I heard my first snippets of their stuff and it sounded really, really cool, so I ordered Ege Bamyasi, which seemed like a good place to start.
Thoughts? Recommendations?

...I think you can at least get some idea from 30-second samples.
The only time I've really been absolutely thrown was Cornelius. Man, that album was insane. I felt like I was inside Brian Wilson's head after he'd forgotten his meds for a couple days.

Does your local library have CDs and/or interlibrary loan? That can really work. San José's library doesn't even charge for interlibrary loan, which is sweet. (y)

...is it the sort of stuff that's good, but you can't just casually listen to it?
Wouldn't get anything by Can. It's more popular and more accessible stuff. They do have the rest of the Ring Cycle by Wagner that I still have to listen to...hmm.
Interlibrary loan, interlibrary loan. One of the great inventions. (y)

Well worth owning.
Tago Mago's good, too. And Future Days is the kind of thing I just let play in the background. Not a lot of their stuff is the kinda thing I'd just pop in the deck in my car on my way to work, though. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I know Can were a big influence on Happy Mondays and Stone Roses. I've read somewhere that Fools Gold by The Stone Roses is a rip off of a Can track. Anybody any idea which one?

...here's what I found:
'Fools Gold' was heavily influenced by Can - listen to 'I'm So Green' from their 1972 LP 'Ege Bamyasi' - and the use of Tackhead/Sugarhill Gang drummer Keith LeBlanc on the 'One Love' sessions is a pointer for the future. LeBlanc is a serious bet for producer of the second album. Would the guitars be swamped by the drums?

Dunno - I am sure that the drum track is a rip off of something (maybe not Can, maybe some old school funk , am not sure) but I seem to remember when Run DMC sampled it there was some funny business with sample clearance. The roses co-operated fully but am sure some other band/songwriter claimed to have some rights - am going back a bit and my mind has been addled by too much of this and that over the years that I may have imagined it.

run dmc said it was a james brown break so it didn't matter, however i've read they used the break from a bobby byrd song (same thing more or less i know). which i have, the name escapes me but for the life of me i can't hear the break on it
and that bassline is ALL mani's

Yeah -- I think that kind of sprawled-out, kind of light funky/jazzy feel is what they might be referring to. But who knows?

i don't remember there being any problems, i was just refering to a tv interview i saw at the time of it's release. They asked run about sampling the roses and he was very dismissive saying, whatever, they just looped a james brown drum break
i'm sure the roses would've been quite flattered at run dmc using it

They were well chuffed. I posted a link about adidas the other day.
Click on this (http://www.adidas.com/campaigns/superstar35/content/index.asp) wait for view collection to pop up on right hand side. Then click on shoe number 16 - Ian Brown and there is an interview with the man on there and he talks about run dmc and when they sampled the roses - its a good interview. It wont give me a direct link - sorry

i can't find anything on the break except one comment from the NME single review when it first came out and it mentions the clyde stubblefield drums. Now I'm fairly sure clyde was drumming for james at the time bobby byrd released his solo stuff so that does sort of make sense but no mention of which track the sample was from

i would imagine because it lasts about 19 mins although there could be another reason

the bobby byrd song we were discussing yesterday is I need help (i can't do it alone). When you hear it see what you think. I can kinda of hear it BUT there's no actual "break" at any point in the song so i have no idea how they did it (if indeed this is the right track)

the bass is sensational no doubt, still not convinced they used the drums on fools gold however.
i keep meaning to buy more who stuff. when i was younger my mates tried to get me into them but i wasn't having it at the time for whatever reason. Strange because they were on my faves to watch on woodstock. Thanks for the heads up i'll try and dig it out

....well, the CD arrived, and I've listened to it three times. It's kind of... it's not trance, exactly, but it gets off on repetition of a slightly-askew not-quite-jazz groove, and then throws in little things to kind of bounce off that, but the grooves kind of deflect or absorb anything tossed in. Really... not entrancing, exactly, but pretty beguiling and addictive. It's kind of like a slightly-stripped, little more angular Stereolab. Definitely worth the investigation, and I'll probably grab at least another CD and see what other albums of theirs sound like.
B+.

My golly. Where have these folks been all my life? :D
Actually, I was very judgemental about them, because at our record store, they were filed under our Prog Rock section. The guy who really liked Prog at our store.... well, the stuff he liked just sounded awful, so I dismissed Can out of hand. That'll go to show me. (y)

i have all of can's (good) albums, so i can send you whatever. monster movie (with this crazy black singer) is much more rock, like a cross between the velvet underground's white light/white heat (as in the album) and the later can stuff like tago mago. it's still really good. future days is great too, though not as funky/jazz oriented as ege bamyasi. the last really good album is soon over babaluma, which is without their japanese singer, damo suzuki. also really good bands in a vein similar to can include Neu, Faust, other german stuff

I'm going to hit the used record stores this weekend. I've had Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi on heavy rotation ever since this thread started. I can't believe how INTO this stuff I am. I wake up, and I'm humming stuff. It's really haunting, but not in a bad way. I can't stop. (y)
