For all of you in the good old US of A, have you done your taxes yet?

I'm trying to do mine and its uber complicated.

I sold some stocks last year and its asking me for the cost basis. How the fuck am I supposed to know how much my gramma paid for the stock or when she bought it? I was a baby!

And for anyone else who's savvy about these things, I sold 50 shares. When I got them, I didn't have 50. It turned into 50 over the years through splitting and dividend reinvestment. Do I have to figure out how many shares were gained from splitting and when and how many were gained through dividend reinvestment and when and get cost bases for each of those dates?

This could get really turgid really fast.

i think i used to have stock, or i think i still have some, but not as much

all i know is that last summer i somehow ended up with $5,000 to my name and that pretty much took care of my school and rent payments since then

yeah I just told you how to figure the split in the PM I sent you. I don't really know that much about it, but that's how the guy at raymond james told me to figure it. and no I don't think you need a cost basis for each date..you just need to figure the adjusted price by the number of splits.

...you can do that online for free, for your federal taxes, anyway.

Anyhoo -- I sent the federal a couple months ago, but waited on California until last week, because I owed some to the bear. But it's all good, and it's all done with. (y)

my mom took care of mine for me (she said it was very easy, apparently taxes aren't too complicated if you barely make any money!) and i still haven't sent in the check yet. i owe $69. i'm kinda happy about that actually, now i can say "i pay my taxes!" and not be lying. all the other years i didn't make enough.
