isnt it a phobia of like crowded places, deriving from the greek word "agora" meaning market place, which in ancient times was one of the busiest places to be during the day, and was always crowded with lots of people.

I just dont like washing my hair, or wearing anything besides my dirty work clothes combined with multiple layers of fleece or wool in public and that can sometimes get you looks, and Im not a fan of those looks so Id rather just stay home thank you very much

oh god, i hate looks. i'm terrible at interpreting looks. i can't tell the difference between "hey, check out that guy" and "haha, check out that guy!" and i assume the worst. then i brood. and look like a douchebag.
oh god, imagine if people have been looking at me admirably all along. that would be so tragic. but i bet they're not. bunch of douchebags

Everything's gonna be okay
Everything's gonna be alright
Together we can take this one day at a time
Can you take my breath away
Can you give him life today
'Cos everything's gonna be okay
I'll be your strength, I'll be here when you wake up
Take your time and I'll be here when you wake up

Actually, pubs are one of the few places it doesn't kick in. Probably due to classical conditioning.

Quite a few of the kids I work with online are in the program because they are agoraphobic. It can be quite crippling. One girl hasn't left the upper floor of her house for months - her whole world is her bedroom and bathroom. She's 14.:(

im the kind of person that could become agoraphobic, which is why i force myself out sometimes. i just like being in my little world. it's perfectly comfortable. i have had panic attacks and i cant imagine having to go through that fear constantly.. ugh.

oh i think i probably have that too....i don't really get panic attacks, but i'm uncomfortable around people sometimes (unless i'm with friends too) and i'm home most of the time, except for school. i keep to myself...actually, it's probably not a phobia after all, i'm just really shy..... :o

me too, I used to get panic attacks a lot, especially during school when I was younger. For awhile I was convinced that I was gonna end up stuck in my room and afraid to leave, but it passed. Now it seems the place where I get most anxious is my own house,

Agoraphobia is interesting, because it comes in many flavours. The agoraphobia most people here (and that I have heard of) descibe is closer to hikikomori
(http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/15/magazine/15japanese.html?ei=5088&en=7b1fdacbeb794332&ex=1294981200&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&pagewanted=all (Hikikomori))
than "traditional" agoraphobia, where symptoms are more related to being far away from help of safety, rather than anxiety at being around a group of people.
Of course, agoraphobia (literally, fear of the market place) generally applies to the term as used here more.
I think it might be symptomic of social alienation.
