Paul's Boutique, Hello Nasty, and Check Your Head are the three essential Beastie records to date. (y)

Oh, heck yeah. Ill Communication is good stuff, but... it could almost be leftovers from the CYH sessions.

If I were to make a "How To Become A Beastie Boys Fan" book, the first thing I would write is, "Get Paul's Boutique".

I think Pauls Boutique should be the last record to listen to if your a new fan. You will have a much more appreciation for it, than if you listened to it first because no other album is like it.

I wish live at pjs and alright hear this could have been on the same record, but if i had to choose CYH or IC, id say BUY CHECK YOUR HEAD!

Check your head is my favorate album, I loved the concerts back in 92 over the others, plus CEY done his best work with the logo's at this time.

During check your head its like the beasties are saying "here it is, we had fun making it, fuck you if you dont like it"

That's how it haoppened for me. When LTI came out, I thought there were a few good songs on it steamrollered by total obnoxiousness. Part of that, I imagine, was also because of their public persona, which you wouldn't want to get locked in a room with. And it was huge, it was everywhere, and all the assholes had it cranked up at every fucking party you went to, and ultimately, someone else's home wound up getting trashed and, whatever people think, that's really no fun. It was just so obnoxious. So, during the hiatus, they went off my radar, then the second album came out and tanked and it was like, "Thank God THAT'S over."

And then a year or so later, a guy I worked with at a record store insisted Paul's Boutique was really good, and I should listen to it. We had a used copy, so I threw it on, and it was a revelation. It was dizzying and funky and honestly funny -- not horselaugh funny, but witty funny -- and a production masterpiece. I couldn't believe it was the same guys. I bought that and played it over and over and it became one of my two favorite workout records to blast in the morning while I lifted. Wake up, smoke some pot, throw on Paul's Boutique, and lift -- that was many, many a morning.

I waited and finally Check Your Head came out. I bought it the day it was released and threw it on, and now they'd brought the DIY aesthetic into the fold -- jazz/funk/rock/groove/rap. Two masterpieces -- a few years apart, but still. Great stuff.

Ill Communication was fine, it had some good stuff. But then Hello Nasty was just new brilliance. It's like a more focused Sandista!, and their first album since Paul's Boutique that's really like a musical journey. There are all kinds of styles on there, but the way that it's sequenced is perfect, and by the time you get there, "Instant Death" is pretty chilling.

Great stuff. Whatever else happens, these guys have had a great, great run. (y)

Yeah. I... it was all right, and I could kind of see what they were going for, which could've been very cool. But that album, for the most part, just kinda laid there for me. The disappointment factor was pretty steep, too.

You?

I feel that da boys, with being on such a unique style and sound in the CYH sessions, created an even more focused sound with Ill Communication. Sonically, the albums are quite distinct from one another.

my opinion is that Ill Communication is an album for people who r more rap fans than rock. i luv rap but not a big fan of rock and to me IC had more rap then CYH

That must have been pretty traumatic experience. Usually when I buy a record and I don't like it at first, I give it few more listens.

When I bought TT5B I wasn't blown away by it and after almost two years nothing has changed. But I listen to it from time to time.
