I got federal filed a couple months ago -- a bit of a return. I owed California a little, so I sent that in a couple of weeks ago.

I take it you don't have anything like PAYE (pay as you earn) in the US. As I'm employed I don't have to do anything tax related, it's taken straight from my salary.

I always get fucked when it comes to NY State Taxes...

Federal is giving me $393 but NY says I owe them $550...

so i filed online and it says it is being processed... I wonder how I pay them what I owe them...

i hate the fact that neither of my last 2 jobs bothered to take out state taxes form my paycheck so i still have to pay them more now...

we do have that, but if you work in certain situations as a self employed person, you need to save 30% for tax time... my 30% went to lots of macaroni and cheese and grilled cheeses... i cant afford to save

i did mine a while back. i got my money before i even filed it. i told my ex how much i was going to get back, and he gave me the money. long boring story, but because of him i won't get a return for a few years. so he pays me outright.

I did my kid's taxes for him because he was strapped for time at university while he was preparing for something else and his taxes weren't altogether straightforward.

Someone that I knew recommended an online tax service that did federal taxes for free and state taxes for $10. So I tried it and it saved my kid money because it itemized for something that I didn't even know about. That not only made it so that he didn't owe the state, but he got something like $150 back from them. NICE.
