I've been lookiŽn around on the forum and I've come to the conclusion that most people dislike "To the 5 boroughs". I was actually thinkin of getting it because of that awesome "Ch-ch-check it out".
But now i wanna hear it from you all, is it really that shitty? I mean, is there nothing good at all on it?

One of the great things about the BB is their ability to reinvent themselves and this album is in my opinion more 'hip hop' than previous albums.
I don't think you'll find many people on here who 'hate' this album but there's probably not a lot of people who would call it their favourite either.
I recommend that you buy it - I don't think you'll be disappointed:)

I love TT5B. I just popped it back in the cd player after a little rest, and it sounds better than ever.
Rhyme the Rhyme Well, Oh Word, Shazam, Brouhaha all big thumbs up from me. (y)

DUde, just get it and judge for yourself. To me it is an awsome record one of the best but with the Beasties they can never go wrong. Just get the freakin thing and enjoy.

you dont like the brouHAHAH?
Its a very good record. I think its a better record for newer fans to listen to, unlike hello nasty.
But to all us, all their shit is great
You also had Capital records releasing right right now now as a video here in the usa instead of open letter. Good work idiots. Right Right Now Now is a great song, I think the video would have been better if done live like 3 mcs and 1 dj.
If you dont believe me, watch the vh1 hip hop honors show when they performed it LIVE

It's definitely not shitty. It is more hip hop than previous stuff but the boys always come fresh. The older they get, the better they sound :D My fav is crawl space....I don't get why no one else likes that track :( ......lyrics were on point!
The 5 Boroughs, in my opinion, is a success not just for the tracks and technical components, but the boys hit a greater audience having no swears. It's the only album I don't have to skip lyrics on for the kiddies in the back seat :D

...you must've gotten the clean version...?
I think expectations raised the bar too high.
All I can say is that it's the worst of the bunch. But still miles ahead of 99% of the shit-hop that has been released recently.

I just bought the first one I could get my hands on :o I didn't know there was another version  Does that mean, 'hey f-you' isn't edited on another album?!?!? Please be kind, I'm old. What's the visual difference between the two (if there is two)??? Does the unedited have 'explicit lyrics'??

....the unedited version has the usual parental warning logo on the front. Bottom left. Yep -- explicit lyrics.

Gotta admit I skip more tracks TT5B than any other album, tho. Maybe it's cuz I'm old :(

...maybe it's because it's not very compelling.
It's okay, but not up to the best of their stuff.
And you've used "old" in two posts in a row, by the way. Now you have to swear off for the rest of the day.

Right Right Now Now always makes me think of Wu-Tang Clan.:D
The album is good. I find it ironic that they went through fairly mixed reviews of their Hello Nasty tour performances, while everybody praised the album, and this time around the album is getting mixed reviews and the shows are getting crazy props (Pageant was, anyways).
I don't know which I'd rather have be better, but I'm glad this last time I saw them, they outdid the show six years prior by light-years.(y)

when i first listened to TT5B, Oh Word was absolutely my favorate! However, when I think about TT5B or when i listen to it, the Brouhaha is my fav track. I know Adrock has a bunch of great lines over the years (in more ways than one, anyways) the raps at the beginning of the brouhaha with the beat are fucking A+.
I watch Seinfield alot and Kramer says "brouhaha" quite a few times, so of course i think about the song when he says it
"Now what the blood clot I rap a lot
What you gonna do when the beat goes drop?
Whatcha talkin' 'bout Willis? Who the illest?
You know my name's Adam stop callin' me Phyllis"
when i first heard it i thought adrock said "now what the fuck what, i rap alot"
it makes no sense, but i swear i said it like that for like a month
...you think it's worse than Cookie Puss or Some Old Bullshit?
in a word yes. tt5b should have seen the boys on top form. Whereas Cookie Puss and SOB where when the beastie boys where actually boys.
It's okay, but not up to the best of their stuff.
oh look you agree!

It's not a bad album at all. Infact, if this was the Beastie Boys first album, and they were making their debuts as middle age white rappers, then I'd call it one of the greatest albums ever.
But it's not their debut, this is their sixth album, their first in six years, and because of that, the album, while good, isn't what I'd call a classic. After the awesome stuff they made in the 80s and 90s, and after waiting SIX YEARS for this album to drop, I guess I just expected *more* out of it. I don't know, maybe my expectations were a little too high. But then again, since this is the Beastie Boys we're talking about, then maybe my expectations SHOULD be that high.
It's not bad at all. Certainly better than almost all of the other mainstream rap albums from 2004. I do like all the songs on the album (though it would have been nice to see them do some instrumentals). "An Open Letter To NYC" proves that the Beastie Boys can still go and is one of the best songs they've ever done and "Ch-Check It Out" is just as good as "Intergalatic".
But still, To The Five Boroughs is the Beastie Boys album I play the least. Last Sunday was the first time I played it since last October. And given the choice between To The Five Boroughs and Hello Nasty, I'd choose Hello Nasty in a heartbeat.

I think you need to kind of just get this album. You do or you don't. In my opniion, some of the reviewers were bang on...notable the NME one and the Rolling Stone one.
For some reason, I never thought of it like 'this album took 6 years, so it better be good', becasue it didn't. And months before it came out the Beasties said it was an all hip hop, stripped down affair.
I got over the fact it wasn't going to be an epic, or like one of the 90's records. In fact I liked the idea they were doing an all hip hop one. If it was their last record ever, then I might be a tad disappointed.
But I love the stripped down, simple approach. Rhyme the Rhyme Well for instacne, to me, is just perfect. Simple as you like, but I can listen to that song any time of day and enjoy it, as with most of TT5B.
And also, it's so brilliantly and refreshingly different from all the other so-called hip hop of today that it works for me every time (y)

I came into their music late and I came to them because of lyrics that I'd read v. songs of theirs that I'd heard.
I listened to TT5B before I listened to Paul's Boutique or, I think, any of the other early or mid-range releases. I knew songs like Intergalactic and Body Movin' but that was it.
TT5B was a cool thing for me and I enjoyed the mood and sounds of it--maybe I benefitted from not having had other BB-related points of reference, but TT5B hit a spot for me and it settled in nicely. There are only a couple of its songs that I don't particularly enjoy--everything else, to me, is fine.
I'll admit that it's different--it's not the same album as Paul's Boutique--but they're not the same people; times changed and they changed along with it.

So in other words, they became old and boring and so did their music.
I can't front I'm quite boring also now that I'm older now.

Not sure that's what enree was sayin...it's true the boys have evolved as they age, that's one of their best qualities (y) ......in fact, the older the get the better they get  I dare anyone to prove me wrong...but, I have to identify truths when I see 'em.....I'm a real bore now that I'm older, aren't we all ?

W/the live shows.. hmmmm.... The crowds a bit tamer... The songs off TT5B don't come off too exciting live.... hmmm other than that I must admit they are a tour de force live. Just take for example the most recent letterman performace, utterly amazing.

Yep, I agree. I hope they never lose it live while they're still going, and would be hugely surprised if they did.

I bought the clean version to listen around little kids. I don't reccomend doing that unless you have little kids.
Get the version with the motherfuckers in it. It's the best.
As for the album, it's my favorite but each time a new album comes out, it's been my favorite. It's got some wickedly ill b-sides as well.
Ch-check it out -- awesome
Triple Trouble -- overused sample but still fun
Shazam! -- stellar
Crawl Space -- nice lyrical change of delivery
Brouhaha -- my favorite of the album
Hey Fuck You -- it's got some really nice ryhmes in it
Hell, the whole album is tight. If you're a Beastie fan, get it. If you love old school hip-hop, get it. It's the right dose of old school flavor with a high top sneaker kickin' it in the here and now.

hearing the TT5B stuff live, made me respect it even more. You could tell they were giving 100% with the lyrics and the song in general. Unlike some of the things they do with posse in effect and even brass monkey sometimes.
I really think they had a lot of fun performing the new songs. Hopefully that continues
