Neil Young has a bazillion albums. Which ones do you have?
Here's my list (roughly in the order they were added to my collection, starting about 12 years ago)
Harvest Moon
Ragged Glory
Rust Never Sleeps
Live Rust
Weld
Sleeps with Angels
Dead Man
Broken Arrow
Year of the Horse
Harvest
Tonight's the Night
American Stars 'n Bars
Greendale
On the Beach
After the Gold Rush
Prairie Wind
I also have this thing "Neil Young/Thom Yorke: Live at the Bridge School" which is great. It's all acoustic (2 separate performances). And a Buffalo Springfield 'Best of' CD.
I'm sure some of you will look at my list and think '[classic album] is missing!' One thing I love about Neil Young is no matter how many of his records you have, assuming your collection isn't complete, there's always some masterpiece or quirky release out there still waiting to be discovered. (y)
Oh, and have you seen him live? I was lucky enough to see him at Madison Square Garden for the Broken Arrow tour, and again at Radio City Music hall for Greendale. Both shows were with Crazy Horse.
I just heard about the new 'hard-rockin' protest record' he just recorded and I'm really excited about it. It's supposed to come out in 6-8 weeks. I haven't been this excited about an upcoming release in a long time. I mean, when I think about it I get pretty hyped. I can't wait to hear it! I guess it's what prompted this thread.
So please share your list and thoughts/experiences about Neil Young...

he has a lot of good stuff but also a lot of garbage also.

he is the only 60's artist still doing good stuff...

I have to agree with Extra Cheese's take, as much as I love Neil.
Unlike many, at least he is doing something. Rust never sleeps in his life, all that output and energy eventually strikes gold. I respect Neil Young because even his clunkers are what "he" wants to do, not the corporate ownership segment of the recording industry would like to hear.
When he is on, it's a thing of beauty.
I've seen him live only as a guest at a local Pearl Jam show. :( I had tickets for a show awhile back, but gave them away due to an east coast trip.
What a fucking stellar band Crazy Horse is. (y) ZUMA!

If you have all of those i suggest you check out his first self-titled album. It's not the best but it's good.

I've been playing Prairie Wind a lot lately... the album will end and I'll hit 'play' again.. that happens every once in a while with an album.. this one is wonderful. I was probably listening to it when I got the news about the new album, heh. I'm playin it now
tick, tock the clock on the wall
A friend of mine (same one quoted in my sig now actually), who was a Neil Young head when I was just discovering him (actually almost all my buddies in college, some of them in bands basically worshipped Neil Young) said he made shitty music on purpose while working for David Geffen. I don't know if it's true but it's hilarious (y)
Also one of my other friends from then used to refer to CSNY as Shithead, Shithead, Shithead and Young. :p
cosmo - really? haha :o (some of them were gifts)
edit - I said albums and records but mine are all on CD.. maybe half are also on my computer (for whatever reason - I like all the albums I have). Among many others including Zuma* and the self titled one, I'd love to hear Trans, I'm curious. Like yeahwho said the man does what he wants (y)
*I did buy Cortez the Killer from Zuma from the itunes store. So I have that track and the cover art on my computer

Have you watched the "Heart of Gold" concert? It's phenomenal!
Anyways, I'm sure this'll interest all of you. Neil Young is releasing an anti-war album (including the song "Let's Impeach The President").

Well, Geffen Records did sue Neil Young for "not sounding enough like Neil Young." I don't know if they were shitty, but they were deliberately not his signature sound.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. ha
I did see Heart of Gold and yes it was as amazing as I'd heard. I was familiar with all those songs but seeing some of them performed in the film brought tears to my eyes. Like the one he wrote for his daughter leaving the nest... wow (y)
There was a good interview with him and Jonathan Demme on Fresh Air. One interesting thing is that some of the lyrics from Falling Off the Face of the Earth were from a voice (?) message from Jim Jarmusch. I guess they've stayed close friends after doing Dead Man (one of my all time fave films).
The album and film both are touching and beautiful.

Great great artist for sure, my mom often listened to him when I was a kid. I just own 4 or 5 of his albums, my favourites at the moment are "On the Beach" and "After the Goldrush".
I absolutely have to see the "Heart of Gold" movie.

neilyoung.com has lyrics from the new songs
The other day there was a message saying he'd played Living with War for Reprise on Tuesday and it would be out on CD and DVD "as quickly as we can get it to you" (I think that's what he said) and streaming sooner (y)
"i think it is a metal version of Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan...... Metal folk protest?"
tellin ya... hyped!! (y)
So how about some lists? Don't be shy, it's not a pissing contest... whether you have 2 Neil Young albums or more than me (:o), which ones are they? He has such a huge catalog I think it would be an interesting exercise.
And for what it's worth, in rotation here now, aside from Prairie Wind, is Rust Never Sleeps. I think my pulling that one out the other day was cosmo's doing :)

"Southern Man" has to be one of the best songs in the history of songs.
