Did you ever play any sports?
Do you still do something active, like yoga or basketball or jogging?
Why do you do what you do instead of something else?
Do you think there's a personality type that is attracted to your activity?
With the weather warming up I feel more active and wanting to do more exercise. I never can keep a regular workout schedule for very long. I used to get up in the morning and run 5 days a week, and I did Tae Bo for a while. But these days it's just capoeira and dance class. But I'll have to wait a month for the next season for dance to start again.
I never did any sports except soccer for one year when I was 13. Back then, where I lived, soccer wasn't as popular as it is now - especially not for girls. So I think the girls who signed up for it were a combination of the less athletic with no loyalty to a sport, and the ones who are so athletic they try anything.
Now with capoeira, it seems like the people who join it are either martial art types or people who are always looking for something new - which means they're fickle too. And people join who just want something they think is "alternative" Not many people stay with us though. People have other stuff to do and they often come in with other expectations. Because it's a slow thing to learn. You don't do anything cool for a while. It takes a long time to catch on and people don't want to do the music or songs, which are expected of you if you want to stay with it.
At the retreats where the other schools are, it seems like there's a lot of dorky guys there, really lanky and quiet and they seem to want to quietly knock you over and feel proud of themselves. There's a few obnoxious people too.
My ballet class is a joke, so I wouldn't use it to decide what kinds of people are drawn to it. My class has women who used to dance and just want to get back in shape.

Did you ever play any sports? As a kid, I played a ton of sports, but focused mainly on (American) Football and baseball. Played Football all through HS.
Do you still do something active, like yoga or basketball or jogging? I play softball in the summer and fall twice a week, and I just got a job being a softball ump, so I'll be up on my feet alot more than I normally was. Which is a good thing.
Why do you do what you do instead of something else? Because I'm really good at softball and not much else, sport-wise
Do you think there's a personality type that is attracted to your activity? Not really, I play in a league that's a good mix of fun and competition. The fact that one of the leagues is a co-ed league makes it even more of a fun league.

Why are basketball players so cocky? What's with the tugging on the jersey and the dumb faces and the yelling? Basketball players always seemed to have so much attitude.

Weather's cooling down here, and I played team sports once in my life. I preferred skating, because I didn't need to think about, or interact with other people.
I don't play nothing but video games, and I'm not an obese male.

I've played football since I was a kid and love it. I don't do it for the exercise, simply because I love playing it.
I cycle because it was my only transport until I was 17 and still love to do it.
I moved to the coast a couple of years ago and decided to surf, I only do it for myself, not to look cool or anything - I'm not very good but enjoy the challenge

Do you still do something active, like yoga or basketball or jogging? i rollerblade... see my previous post
Why do you do what you do instead of something else? because it doesnt require a lot of equipment, i can just slip them on and off as needed, getting around the city. i like the feeling of gliding, i can go far distances, pass lots of different scenery, and get great excercise at the same time.
Do you think there's a personality type that is attracted to your activity? hmmm i don't know. there are two types of rollerbladers, the ones that wear helmets and fanny packs and the ones that go commando. most helmets look silly and are just another thing to carry around. yeah i know im gonna get hit by a bus a die. eh

I do love tennis though, just don't play it much because it's hard to find someone to want to play. It's more fun, cleaner, you have more room to spread out. I like the thwock sound. I don't know the tennis type personality, do you?

I wanted a guitar, and my parents bought me a tennis racket instead. I just used it as a guitar.
I used to play "soccer" and do track and field when I was younger. But I stopped when it got too serious, I liked it better when it was just for fun.
I still work out almost on a regular basis. And I do it to be able to actually have some bodyweight.

See, I always though there were the ones who do it to do tricks and daring stunts - the skater type who wear baggy clothes and ride down stair rails and skate over ramps. And then there are those like you who do it for exercise only. You probably would have a lot in common with cyclists and runners. Long distance, repetitive motion, solitary, competitive only with yourself.

I played volleyball in highschool. I liked it because it was more skill than pure running stamina like other sports. and I used to play in an outdoor grass league in the past during university etc but now I work too much
I played baseball in elementary school, hardball with the boys, I hated softball because girls sucked and the softball was too big. Plus by playing baseball my dad coached me some of my years. I played beerleague softball in university but now I work too much
I rule at badmington and tennis but there is never anyone to go with, plus I work too much
and in the winter I went to the gym pretty regularly but now Im too damn tired when I get home from work to drag myself there anymore it seems
I may buy a bike and ride to work, it'd be well over an hour/hour and a half ride but I really have nothing better to do

I never played sports in high school, just skateboarded. I've been contiplating on picking it back up again but I'll be a dinosaur because the tricks have way advanced since the last time I've skated.
I jog whenever I get freetime and I also hike quite often.

I think dancer types are perfectionists, dreamers, and purely athletic in that they enjoy expressing themselves physically. I think some are attention-demanding and they love the idea of performing, but some are just competitive and like a challenge - against themselves. Because you can never be a perfect dancer, there's always room for improvement of technique and execution.

Working out and participating in sports has a certain addictive quality. Once you get caught up in the routine it's tough to shake the 'high' you get from getting the adrenaline pumping...which is a good thing!
I play Division 1 hockey year-round in the Ottawa Senior Mens League. We're the 'Minglewoods Warriors' , named after an irish pub owned by the younger brother of our team captain. Fun as hell because i've been reunited with all the guys I played competitive with when I was a wee lad. I'm crazy about tennis too. I play 3 or 4 days a week with a few people and enter public tournaments if i'm feeling good about my game once in awhile. Tennis is alot like golf. The pros make it look effortless on t.v but there is quite of bit of good technique required to be adept at playing it.
I try to hit the weights 4 or 5 times a week. I hate doing leg and cardio workouts so with all the sports I enjoy it seems to level things out as far as the lower body workouts go. I played in a co-ed soccer rec league last summer but fucked up my ankle big time so i'm going to abstain from playing for awhile :D

Did you ever play any sports?
not really, no
Do you still do something active, like yoga or basketball or jogging?
Yes, I do yoga, and prior to being pregnant did a fair amount of hiking/country walking. Britain has an excellent network of public footpaths. It never fails to amaze me how easy it is to jump on a train and be out hiking through cowfields in under an hour.
Why do you do what you do instead of something else?
Well I've never been much for team sports - seems like a lot of work organising everybody. Plus I don't really do anything that involves running or a lot of sharp movements, because it's just not comfortable with big boobs. Fact.
Do you think there's a personality type that is attracted to your activity?
Lefty tree huggers, yummy mummies, men who wear sandals and librarians.

Oh I forgot that last fall I got briefly into wall climbing. It's supposed to simulate rock climbing but it's much easier because there are obvious hard plastic hand and foot grips instead of just cracks in a rock. I haven't been in a while because you need someone to belay you (give and take up the slack in your rope)
I thought it was fun because it was a total escape in every way. It required all my physical capacity - strength, balance, endurance, some flexibility - and it was a problem solving sport so it required my full attention - you have to figure out how to get up the wall and which thing to grab and where to put your foot to get you to the next level.
And it was exciting to reach the top! Sometimes you try and try and keep falling and then you just say screw it one more try...and you give it a big effort and you get it! And it was just that one grip that you wanted to reach and you reached it! So encouraging.

I've never been one for team sports because I felt too much pressure on me, too much competition. When I've said this before, people who do like team sports were confounded because they argued that in a team, less pressure is put on the individual because you are all working together.
I don't know, I prefer to be alone and to solve problems by myself or to just play against one other person. I am competitive when it's me against someone else, and I like personal challenges and being so absorbed in the activity that I don't have to think of someone else.
This is why I have enjoyed individual or dual sports the best. Like doubles tennis is okay, the lines and boundaries are clear. Maybe I just never had good experiences with team sports. I played with greedy players who hogged the court.

[QUOTE=Nuzzolese]Did you ever play any sports? I was in competitive cheerleading from the age of 7 till my senior year in high school. Some softball and soccor as well.
Do you still do something active, like yoga or basketball or jogging? Bikram yoga about 4-5 times a week, I run like crazy and throw some spinning classes in there as well.
Why do you do what you do instead of something else? the yoga is relaxing...mind body and soul..where the running / spinning is more cardio
Do you think there's a personality type that is attracted to your activity? all I know is that this balance of calm / crazy works well with my moods while kicking my ass into shape. [QUOTE]

Do you miss the team effort you had in cheerleading? Do you miss the choreography and gymnastics or does yoga fulfill that? I never did cheerleading. I wanted to sometimes but I was too quiet and too modest to show so much of my body in front of everyone. Weird, since I could do dance performances in a leotard. That was different though. The audience was quiet, in the dark, not interacting with me.
I don't like running because my mind wanders too much. I get bored. All I can focus on is how much it hurts my joints.
I always hated working out for working out's sake. I like to be learning something new.
What's a spinning class?
beastiegirrl101
04-18-2006, 11:59 AM
I do miss the cheerleading...I was in my best shape ever back then. While most schools had a pom and a cheerleading squad we only had one team that did both so it was a lot of work. If I didnt go to an arts college I probably would have cheered collegetly.
I am with you though on team sports, never really been big on it. I always felt so much pressure getting up to bat if I didnt get on base. Bowling though, there's a team sport we all can enjoy.
Spinning is really intense. Its a simulated bike class. There are a bunch of stationary bikes and you ride really fast, slow, on a incline, sitting, standing while constanly changing the resistance on the bike. The music rocks...
I cant run on a treadmill, so now that the weather is nicer I have to get out of my house. When I feel bummy and non motivated I tell myself, whenever you dont work out, someone else does.
(also I am standing up to my brothers wedding in September so thats sorta a motivator)

I go to the gym 5-6 days a week and I do that to maintain or contribute to good physical/emotional health. When I'm healthy, I'm a better person in terms of the way I feel and think and in terms of the things I can do for myself and other people.
At the gym, I use a variety of machines and then do floor work.
During warmer weather, I run not for exercise but more for mental discipline. Training for long races helps me to remember that I can do an overwhelming or challenging thing if I approach it incrementally.
I do other physical types of projects, but those, like running, I do mostly as a sort of purgative mental exercise.
Motivation for me is this: I want to be able to be active and use my body for good things AND I don't want to play catch-up with my health. I've seen people over the years but little by little let themselves go in terms of diet & exercise, and all the while, they're taking up more and more bad habits. Often, in their 30s or 40s they have a bout with their first serious or semi-serious illness and THEN they try to give up all of the bad stuff AND get in shape or get back in shape. That's a lot of stuff to do in tandem and it's not easy. If I can avoid it, I don't want to play catch-up, so I try to stay ahead of it. When I feel the urge to slack off, I think in those terms and envision bringing that sort of scenario home and if I imagine that effectively, then I can kick myself into gear.

Did you ever play any sports? Rugby and hockey mostly at school.
Do you still do something active? I can't do heavy exercise because of some problem with my ears but I do some yoga because my back is so weak and I think it's helping. I also use my mum's rowing machine at home because home is where no one can judge me for wearing a jim-jam top exercising.
Why do you do what you do instead of something else? I really want to get into running and swim again. I used to be a great swimmer but again, ear problem. I also like skiing and my prospective university city has the largest snow dome in Europe. Anyway, I can't ski here so rowing will do for now.
Do you think there's a personality type that is attracted to your activity? I'm an aggressive player so rugby and hockey definitely suit.

I think you have to experiment until you find something that you like and that fits with your schedule and abilities.
I used to enjoy group things like aerobics but then something happened and everyone started getting all chummy and cutsie and they'd go WOOOOOO every 10 seconds and that stopped being the thing for me to do.
I don't like "spining" for the same reasons ^^^ just a little too cutesie. Plus, it really does all depend on the instructor and the music that they play. Bad instructor=wasted money, bad music=headache.
I think I like the stuff I do at the gym because I don't have to rely on anyone else to do it. I just need the machines to be free/available and I can pretty much wear whatever I want--no special equipment is required.
I think I learned a long time ago that doing anything that requires another person, for me, is a bad thing. Most times when I've exercised with other people, they do it at like half intensity or they're late showing up or they try to talk you into a shorter session--stuff like that. It's usually not a good thing.
Doing anything that requires expensive equipment is a bad thing (for me).
And probably most importantly, doing anything that I can't do year long=bad choice for me. I don't like having to stop and start and stop again--each time I stop (for the weather, say), I run the risk of not starting again.

i was in shorin-ryu karate for 6 years when i was a kid and i absolutely loved it. but my father had to live vicariously through me some way when i was in high school so he forced me to do sports. water polo was the only thing that really appealed to me, because i could kick some serious ass in it. and ass i did kick. it was intense. the training was so much harder than i ever imagined - from what i talked to the kids in other sports, much harder than any other team's. and of course the BOYS had their season in the summer and we had our season in winter. when the steam coming off the pool fogged up the entire deck and everyone could see just how cold you were in those skintight TYR zip-up suits. we had to have those, because if you had one with straps the girls would rip them right off you. anyway, that kicked my ass into such amazing shape. i was 5'6" of streamlined muscle. i had no talent, though. i only scored one goal in one game and completely sucked the rest of the time. (but it was an awesome goal! remember my "scrappy" behind the back story? yeah. that was all.)
seriously though, i hated having to do it because i was more interested in karate and theater (shut up). at one point i was going to school at 5:30 in the morning for practice, then a game right after, then jetting to karate, then showing up late for rehearsal. it was so draining. i begged to quit but no, he made me quit drama :(
when he died i stopped going. i had no desire whatsoever to continue in it.
but i stayed in karate for a couple years after that.
i went through a rough patch and got really fuckin' lazy and fat and then i started running and working out and i've been pretty good about that ever since. matt and i used to run around our old apartment complex...but lately it's been too cold to do that here at night. so we finally got a gym membership and we've been really good about going. it's great when you have someone to support you through it.
i don't consider myself an active person though. my mom hikes all the damned time and i've only been with her once or twice. i like going, but just...bleh. i mean, look at this post count.
i really ache to get back into karate. but it was more about the environment and mental aspect for me than the physical. most dojos aren't going to have anywhere near the same dynamic as my old one did. these people were a second family to me. and it taught me so much, really shaped who i am today. i can't imagine the person i would be without it.
ask me about rollerblading races
i used to be active as a kid because my parents made me. i played (terribly) football, baseball, basketball, right up until the point where winning actually made a difference, then i quit. i used to bike somewhat regularly, and rollerblade, but i got bored.
recently i've decided to take up running, but i'm not sure if i'm gonna stick with it, because i feel like i ought to get up early to do it and i don't like getting up early. i do enjoy it though, i kind of like having sore legs the next day. it feels...satisfying. i need it badly too, because i have such pathetic stamina, i run out of breath so soon. i don't know we'll see

the hiking is a good way to take a break and erase all of the tensions being built up. I'm trapped inside of an office for quite a long time a day and sometimes work 7 days a week so, it's a good way to breath in fresh air and enjoy nature's beauty.
It's about to be my vacation time where I take a month and just go camping. I bring no food and only eat fish that I've caught and I also have a water filter where I can stop by any creek or stream and use it for drinking water.

I played basketball from 4th-6th grade, there was no team in 7th or 8th because of budget cuts, then I played in high school from 9th to 11th grade. I didn't make the varsity team for senior year because the coach made me play guard (I had played forward most of my life because I was tall for my age, but then stopped growing) and I sucked at it. also, he was a dick. I loved playing basketball because of the comraderie and competition. You can always run faster when someone's chasing you.
I played volleyball in 5th and 6th grade, but didn't like it much.
I tried golf my junior year and earned my varsity letter. Apparently I'm a natural, but I never really had a chance to play very much after that. I liked golf practice, but I didn't like matches because you had to play with people you didn't know from other schools and most of the girls were rich bitches.
I played indoor and outdoor soccer in college for fun, but I was pretty terrible at it. I liked indoor better. I also played broomball, which is sort of like hockey, but with shoes and a ball and broom-shaped sticks. that was super fun, but dangerous.
Now, I ride my bike. I love it. I suppose I like the danger of it somewhat, and the speed. I like talking to myself and singing while I'm riding.
I just generally like competition in all forms. And it feels good to be strong.
Also, it's fun to see how your body changes, or how you can develop stamina through practice.

Did you ever play any sports? Started playing basketball at 11 and entered a junior state team when I was 14. Quit because I got asked to play across other states, but decided not to due to family/friends and I was still a lil' youngin' :)
Do you still do something active, like yoga or basketball or jogging? Starting basketball again...Next week as a matter of fact :p
Why do you do what you do instead of something else? Not that interested in any other sports... Basketball seems to be the only sport I'm decent at.
Do you think there's a personality type that is attracted to your activity? Not entirely sure...I know basketball is a male-majority sport, but I don't think personality has anything to do with it.

Some of this has to be cultural. Australians and Europeans seem (to me at least) to be much more active and generally much more fit than Americans.
Outside of the U.S., I've seen much less emphasis on processed food and much more emphasis on "exercise" that's less exercise (as we know it) and more just general activity. And it's built in as a part of daily life. Like walking to a place v. driving and the kids are into sports in a way that's entirely different from the way a lot of our kids are into sports.
That lifestyle/exercise tendency and the diet habits are two important differences that were obvious to me at a glance every time I've traveled > the U.S. These things contribute to health and lifelong exercise patterns but they appear to be more of a social norm in other places than they are here...?

i strive to be 1% as lame as this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4235975853526704919&q=rollerblading).
it just looks so lame. those things are strapped to his feet!
skateboarding just requires so much much more skill and style, plus looks better and is more fun (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5484763667944700657&q=emerica&pl=true)

i blame the suburbsThere's something to that. There are like no sidewalks in a lot of the prefab kinds of neighborhoods. When I was a kid, we took a long walk each night after dinner...it would be hard to do that with the way suburbs are engineered now.

i used to skate, but blading seems so much more practical to me. yeah they're strapped to your feet, i dont really care - so are skis and snowboards.
btw. whenever i see groups of skateboarders, they're constantly falling down or fucking up tricks. yeah it might require more skill and 'style' (whatever that means) but 95% of the skaters you see on the street suck - but i will say, most of the time they do have the look down in a hot topic way. they should spend more time refining their skills and less time grooming that skater 'style'. i have yet to see someone complete a REAL trick on the street. its usually the perpetual, pull up your pants, look expressionless to the sides, attempt to do a trick, the sound of a skateboard scraping and tumbling about, the skater walking off as they pull up their pants again. repeat.
also its harder to get around the city on a skateboard. hitting rough terrain on a skateboard is harder. and im not about to challenge myself when im weaving through traffic and around busses.
good skateboarders are amazing, but I wouldn't qualify most of the people out there as 'good'.
