View Full Version : How to make a quick & dirty recording of a sound?

I want to record a sound and then edit it later on. Initially, though, I just need to work the unedited recording in and around other recorded pieces (MP3s).

The sound that I want to record is in a building that's part indoors and part outdoors. The sound will last for maybe 2 minutes and I'll want to record it without interruption (i.e., I don't want to stitch a 2-minute piece together from four 30-second recordings).

This does not need to be a sophisticated process and product. It's just a thing for me to use on a project that I've got. There has to be some sort of inexpensive device that can render a simple & editable yet continuous 2-minute recording...yes?

If it means going into a Best Buy, I'll do it but I draw the line at Radio Shack.

I know people locally who would jump all over this, but they wouldn't be able to settle for <perfect AND they'd take weeks to do it and by then, I'll have long moved onto something else. I can accept what to them is barely acceptable. :)

Any advice?

My mp3-player has a built-in mic. That's the quickest and dirtiest way I can think of.

A less dirty but almost equally quick way would be using my minidisc player and a mic.

I thought of the MP3 thing, but the ones that I've seen here only do short recordings. I think I'll need at least 2 minutes.

I don't know what a minidisc player is but I'll check it out.

Thanks, Thomas. Happy birthday a few days later. :)

A lot of mobile phones have voice recorders if you go to the Media bit off the menu. That would probably do the job.

But I have a friend who has a fairly new one. It's tiny and flippy. Maybe hers has what you said. I'll check it out. THANKS!

BTW: I didn't even think about trying a mobile phone. You are so damn smart! (lb)

I almost answered for you about the phone, since I know it's super old!

You work with a lot of men, a lot of scientists, you have to stay abreast (sp?) of technological advances in your field, you travel quite often and have to stay in peak physical condition, you attend KKK rallies to observe, you make secret recordings, and you maintain extreme secrecy in your personal affairs. You're an FBI agent.

Actually, I'm fairly dull, boring. My recording is just for me to listen to and do a sort of exercise with. It would bore most of you to tears and then insanity and then you'd get religion.

That's one way to convert.
