View Full Version : Well this is freakin irritating

I am so annoyed!
Ok so, with baby due any day now, mr.peachy and I are looking to hire a cleaner for once a week, to help out with some of the basic household stuff. My mom isn't going to be able to come over and help us intially, so it would just be really nice to have someone else come in and, say, give the tub a scrub, vaccuum etc while we get used to this whole 'parenting' thing, you know?
So, a week ago, I put up a notice in the mailroom of my building asking if anybody cared to recommend their cleaner, as I though that would be a good way to find someone who came with a reference, you know? Our building is fairly posh in many ways; I know lots of people do have cleaners, so this seemed a logical thing.
Three days went by and I hadn't heard anything from anybody, so I went down to see if anybody had taken any of the little 'tabs' with my phone & email from the notice. And the whole notice had been taken down! No others had been, as far as I could tell (there are ones that had been up there for months), just mine. I spoke to our porter and the buidling manager and both of them said yes, they had noticed that I had posted the notice and that it had been removed, but had no idea who removed it or why.
So the next day (this is now last Friday), I put up another one, with a note at the top asking that the notice please not be removed without notifying me as to why it needs to be, and I went down yesterday and now this one is gone too!
I am so irritated, I can't tell you. Why would anyone be so rude????
I mean, I get that in the grand scheme of the universe, this is not a major world issue, but seriously, is it just me or does it seem like some unknown person deliberately fucking with me for some reason?
did you say on the thing that you're pregnant/expecting very soon?

yes. Here's the exact text I used on both notices:
Does anyone care to recommend your cleaner?
With a new baby due very shortly, I am looking for a reliable weekly cleaner to help out with some basic household tasks.
Please phone or email if you care to refer someone!
and then I put a bunch of little 'tearaway' tabs on the bottom with my phone number and email, so it's not even like someone would have likely taken the notice because they wanted to apply or something.
ohh ok. heh. well now i'm just as stumped as you are. we need Horatio and his one-liners for this.
"So... *takes off glasses and crouches to the ground* ... they took the advertiser off the wall.... *looks across the room* ... and left no clues *stands up and puts glasses back on, hands on hips* ... etc etc"

Maybe there are people in the building who just don't like to have those signs hanging. Maybe to them it looks sloppy/littery or maybe they're worried that it'll start with a nice sign like yours and degrade into people hanging signs for all sorts of stuff.
That said: people can be weird. Some people can just have such a superior sort of attitude sometimes about the strangest things.

But this is why the message board in the mailroom is there, for people to hang signs on! It's a great big board with all kinds of notices on it- people looking to sell furniture, rent parking spaces, find a roommate, etc etc. Some are very spiffy computer-jobbies, some are little handwritten notes. I can't for the life of me think why my notice in particular would have attracted anyone's ire; I've lived here for years and seen all manner of notes come and go from there.

Sorry--I had this notion that it was maybe hanging on a wall or something.
So, no, I don't understand it other than to reiterate that people can be weird.
Or maybe it's a sort of envy of you and mr. and maybe the baby now too. I found, when I was pregnant, that the pregnancy brought out all sorts of new sides in people. 90% of that was excellent--like 90% of the people were SO sweet and supportive. But it shifted the attitudes in like 10% of people and they seemed envious, maybe a little bitter toward me. It was strange.

Poor princess.
I know, right?
Look, I get that hiring a cleaner is not an absolute neccessity that I will die without. But the fact is, we earn a decent living and I can afford it. So if I want to hire someone to help me out with chores so I can focus more on the baby, I will bloody well do it.

The hell I will. Now I'll just go with a service. I've already rung three to come around and give me an estimate. I was just trying this other way first to be nice and give someone an opportunity to recommend someone who already comes to this building, because I know from when I worked as a cleaner that it's very convenient to have a roster of clients that are all located near eachother, so you are not dashing all over the map betweeen jobs..

Cleaning is therapeutic for me...but if I had the money I would pay someone to get the really nasty jobs done. i.e. bathrooms, floors...windows.

Well I guess they don't "need" it all that badly then, do they, if they've got no fucking sense of urgency about it.

or maybe they don't want to share their cleaners...
I used to do my share of cleaning as well (2½ years as an au pair + other jobs) so I would gladly have someone else do mine if I could afford it. I hate household work as it is (except washing clothes and ironing) so when/if I ever win the lottery the first thing I'd do is hire a cleaner.

No, I am going to have to just let it go. As much as I would love to know who it is so I can save my placenta and stuff it through their mail slot, I just can't dwell on it. There are over a hundred flats in this building and so I guess with that many people there's bound to be at least one flipping idiot who has decided he's got nothing better to do than randomly annoy the fuck out of me, so whatever.

That's what this sicko is banking on. He's going to stalk you until the peanut is born, so he can snatch your purse.

Like anyone in London would notice. Been on a bus here on a warm day recently? They all smell like being inside a nappy anyway.
