Am thinking about buying some turntables to create some hip hop of my own.

Does anyone here own some turntables?

Is it worth it to buy some?

They are expensive, technics run 450 each, plus speakers and a mixer. Thats a ton of money.

Would you reccomend sticking with electric guitars. or are turntables a worthwhile investment?

Are they really hard to learn?

It is worth it if you stick with it. A Technic is worth the investment even if you're just using it to listen to records. They are durable.

Good luck. (y)

any instrument is difficult to master and takes time....

whether it's turntables or a guitar, or whatever.

vinyl will still be around for a while....but yes, CDJ's are the future...and they are quickly becoming nearly indistinguishable from vinyl....

Don't buy Technics, Vestax all the way.

Check ebay for post christmas bargains!

vestax are more expensive, a set of sl1200's will last you forever, mine are about 5 years old now and they're still going strong. be looking at investing more into vinyl's than the decks and a mixer

DJs are also into spinning MP3s too these days. It's kinda corny. But really, it's a lot less corny than CDs, considering you're using discs that actually look like vinyl that you just throw on your usual decks. Whatever though. I'm not knocking either one, really, but vinyl's still where it's at.

if you're looking into making your own hiphop, you might want to get some drum machines and samplers instead of tables

technics 1200's are extremely solid ( I have 3 ranging from 15 to 10 years old ), minor problems, slight tune ups needed, but I can still pound on em.

vestaxs turntables are more versatile with more features, but not as common as 1200s if you plan on playing out

don't go cheap on the mixer, you might want to check into the Denonx300 (http://namm.harmony-central.com/WNAMM05/Content/Denon/PR/DN-X300-lg.jpg), an obnoxiously affordable battle mixer with hamster switches for the crossfader and sliders, very solid mixer for the price. I love mine.

Not exactly on-topic but........

How Vinyl Records Are Made (http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=forwardbound)

It lasts about 10 minutes and talks/shows the process in a non-techie manner (and has good image quality, not the usual fuzzy-with-huge-pixels version). Good stuff.

btw: if anyone wants to transfer vinyl to CD-R or MP3 form, you might want to check this out: ION iTTUSB (http://www.ionaudio.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=47&HS=1). It's a turntable with a USB connection for a computer. You can also use a regular table to make CDs/MP3s but it's a lot more involved process (though that CD/MP3 would probably sound better if say, you used one of the Technics 1200s with a good $80+ Shure or Audio-Technica cartridge - because unlike digital, with analog gear you really get what you pay for).

yeah, a friend of mine has a digital vinyl program.

sick stuff. now that they've pretty much fixed the latency issues....
the "record" you play on actually has sectioned grooves (like differant tracks on a real record), so when you move the needle from "track to track", you skip from mp3 to mp3...

Go for some used technics 1210`s or 1200`s they will last a lifetime. You should be able to get 2 for about 5-600 $ used..
If you had the money i would say Vestax pdx series...

Just for the hell of it, here's an audiophile/non-DJ turntable you WON'T see at Best Buy: VPI Scout (http://www.vpiindustries.com/scout.htm). It's a really popular entry-level(!!) $1,600 audiophile table. Here's a slightly more expensive model (http://stereophile.com/turntables/498/).
