I emailed Mario Caldato to ask him about it, and here's what he had to say:

"Any idea where the "mashed potatoes" sample that the Beastie Boys used in
Ill Communication comes from?"

"SORRY BUT ADROCK HAD THE RECORD, I DON’T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS, SOME OLD BLACK COMEDY RECORD.

PEACE"

I know that doesn't help, but now we know who may be the only person who can answer the question.

I emailed Mario's site but didn't get a response. Oh well.

I appreciate Mario responding but that doesn't tell us anything.

you would think after all this time of discussion on this board about this sample someone would come out and tell us the 100% truth.

I believe this is one of, (if not the most) wanted known information on this site ever.

well maybe 2nd to the screetch mike d thing, but that was only speculative. The sample question needs to be verified.

perhaps someone out their is reading this and would like this question to be answered once and for all.

I see someone has posted the question on google answers but as yet they have not been able to answer it. They have referred back to one of the threads on this website discussing it though so it looks like that may be another dead end!

........round and round and round it goes

its a sample they didn't clear. That's why they don't tell us. Listen to all the black comedy records you can because thats how you will know. yes that is the key

Yeah, he's too lazy to get on the computer. I read in an interview he made his brother (I think) download all the Starbucks in the country. Why couldn't he do that?! :p

What's all the fuss about. This is one of those things that's like fruitless. One day you'll find out where the samples from, and then what?

Duhhh, then everyone sticks their dick in mashed potatoes. I thought that went without saying.

...someone over at the Blowfly message board said he (or she) didn't think it was from a Blowfly album. Too bad -- it sounded right.

Yeah, I e-mailed Adrock asking the same question and recieved his response yesterday:

"I RECORDED THAT LIVE AT MIKE AND TAMRA'S WEDDING. IF I REMEMBER
CORRECTLY THAT'S THE VOICE OF MIKE'S UNCLE WHO DRANK ONE OR TWO
MORE GLASSES OF WINE THAN WHAT IS APPROPIATE AT SUCH OCCATIONS.

ONE LOVE. ADROCK."

Problem solved. End of story!

I don't think it is Richard Pryor, although I couldn't be sure. I know it's not a sample from (Craps) After Hours, as has been suggested. There are some Pryor albums that haven't been released on CD that I haven't heard, but MCA seems to think it's from some dude named Montel, or some album with Montel in the title--not really clear. Anyway, if it were Richard Pryor, I think we'd all know that by now.

Pryor was sampled on some other songs though...just not the mashed potatos one.
