see, i started taking zoloft today, but the franchise store i work at just got sold to corporate, so there's a big party tonight and the boss is gonna buy us a shitload of alcohol.

Like most ppl, i cant help myself when there's free alcohol on offer. it's pretty easy for me to polish off a bottle of vodka in a night, and the doc never gave me any specifics on how much i should drink, he said just to "cut down"

so for anyone who's on or has been on anti depressants, what do you think is a reasonable amount to drink, so i wont get effected too badly?

according to most warning labels, they advise not to drink any alcohol while taking anti depressants. But, you can get away with at least a sixer without having to worry about overdose.

Technically that would be pushing it but the buzz is worth it.

I've taken xanex a couple of times while drinking for recreational purposes...I felt generally happy, but I was quite the dullard while on it. I'm not a doctor.

Alcohol itself is a depressant and absolutely shouldnt be consumed with mostly all medications - especially anti-depressants.

as opposed to what.. drinking for educational purposes? :p

i drank for educational purposes last weekend. i learnt that if you drop a glass into a dunny the glass will smash through the toilet bowl. I also learnt that if you flush a toilet with a gaping big hole in it, you're gonna get wet. I also learnt that next time I'll be trying to make the extra 3 feet to vomit in the yard. A very educational weekend all round ;)

maybe i'll just have a beer or 2, it takes me ages to drink that crap so it should be ok, or maybe i should take a hip flask and fill it up with shots of vodka for another time

perhaps you should either:

1) stay off the pills before the party
or
2) drink water

in my experience it actually reduces the effects of drunkenness. no bad side effects for me. but maybe you shouldn't drink if you've just started taking it. but then again, it's not like its gonna kill you. so don't be a pussy! drink up!

oh yeah, don't stop taking it just for one day or whatever because it's a short acting drug, and when you stop taking it, you get worse than you ever were before (worse as in the symptoms that made you take it in the first place increase greatly)

I'm sure it's fine. You've got plenty of extra brain cells. You should try hang gliding, too.

what dose of Zolof are you starting out on? I'm on it too. if you're tapering on it as is recomended you should be starting at 25 mg which is very low. Thus it's not going to have a huge interaction with the alchohol at that level. if you're starting at higher dose I don't recomend more than a drink or two, because basically you don't know how you're body is going to react to the meds in the first place and then to introduce booze. could be bad.

i'm ignorant and curious; how does the pills actually work?

they're part of a group of drugs called SSRI - selective seritonin (something) inhibitors. they allow more seratonin to pass through your brain and shit.

i was on zoloft for about 6 months after my mom died.

one night i went out to some mexican restaurant with my friends. you know those huge margaritas that looks like you're drinking out of a fishbowl? well, i had 3 of those, so probably really like the equivalent of 6 margaritas. that evening, i could absolutely understand how bree hartman went insane on that drug.

I lost the sweetest boyfriend I ever had because I couldn't control myself from mixing my Zoloft prescription with alcohol. I blacked out on a regular basis all in the name of fun and ended up sleeping with another guy. It crushed my boyfriend. He even forgave me. We tried to patch things up. It was hopeless. I realized that I signed a deal with the devil. Our worlds were not one in the same. He's doing something with his life now.
